LDBB with two more assists (secondary) last night. He now has 9 Goals and 17 Points in his last 11 Games including something like four multi-pointers and just one game with no points. Offensively speaking the kid is clearly playing with a lot of confidence right now.

I laughed when in the pre-season the Caps play x play announcer Joe Beninati said every time he called his name he thought of "Bell Biv DeVoe". You young'uns might not get that reference.

How are we defining "young'uns" in this context? Because I have no idea what that's supposed to be about and while it's impossible for me to be "old" so long as my parents are still around, I'm pretty firmly into Middle Age at this point.

Well then maybe it's a geographic thing. I would assume by now you have looked them up so you know they were an early 90s thing...which is kinda after my time since I was a product of the 80s.

Good for Pinelli! Certainly a surprise, when I heard he made the fringe cut I was pretty sure he wouldn't make the final team.

Oiva Keskinen got an assist on the tying goal on the powerplay and then the deciding shootout goal in a 4-3 win for Tappara yesterday. (Video for the recap but not sure if it's geoblocked.) Nothing special as such, the shootout goal was smooth but not spectacular, but what I like is that he's being relied on in these situations. PP1, shootout, it's good for the kid. He's a long shot to ever make the NHL but every step is progress. (I'm just following him in a "stats and highlights" kind of way FYI.)

why do you feel he’s such a long shot to make the NHL someday? is it because of the round he was drafted in?

Well, it's partly personal, it's just become pretty hard for Finnish non-first rounders to break into the NHL lately. And being pessimistic helps keep my hopes down, haha.

But realistically, outside of a few superstars, it really is quite hard for Finns to break into the league now. A lot of first-rounders are fringe players right now. Where's Kemell? Helenius is trying to break into the Kings lineup. Aatu Räty is somewhere in there for Canucks... Lambert shows flashes but can't stick.

Keskinen is already 20-and-a-half years old. He's not particularly tough. He's more cerebral and probably better suited to the bigger rink. That said his home rink in Tampere is 200 ft x 92 ft so it's a bit narrower than the regular Euro rink (NHL is 200x85), so that might help a bit if/when he tries to make the transition. And while I say he's cerebral, I haven't really seen the kind of super high hockey IQ I'd hope to see, so I don't know how far that will go.

I think he's risen in draft rankings a bit now but at the same time, time is ticking. I think they're taking the right approach for him, developing his playmaking and hockey skills as opposed to "toughness", kinda see how far he can get with skill only, and make the jump when he's more developed, and maybe with better off-ice skills than most Finns. I'm hoping for a Mikael Granlund kind of a (IQ) player. Keskinen is signed to play with Tappara until spring 2026, so this year and next year is set in stone. After that I would imagine it's time to make the jump and see what he's got.

For a more CBJ relevant comparison, I'm hoping for somebody who's got more skill than Pyyhtiä and can develop that skill further. I think Pyyhtiä and his crew opted for the toughness approach and to make the jump early, and it's worked to some degree, but we may now start to find that Pyyhtiä is not able to develop much further. I guess what I'm saying is that if and when Keskinen makes the jump, he's going for a clear 2C or 3C role instead of a grinder, and hopefully he has enough skill to stick.

And again, I barely watch highlights, so take this with a grain of salt, it's more feelings than fact. :D
