And since January 8th (or whatever day the Johansen for Jones traded happened), the blue line has been completely reshaped. Jack Johnson and David Savard no longer play on the top pairing. Fedor Tyutin has been bought out. Dalton Prout is now the 7th defenseman.

I just don't think you understand the difference between these last two seasons.

2016:
Werenski-Jones
Murray-Savard
Johnson-Prout/Goloubef/Nutivaara/Harrington

is a hell of a lot better than

2015:
Johnson-Savard
Murray-Prout
Tyutin-Connauton/Goloubef/Kukan

And what an outstanding job that great D and the 2nd highest paid goalie is doing....9 goal against in 2 games.

:sarcasm:

Yes, I do. A couple of injuries and Prout and Nutivaara are in the top 6. That doesn't look like a playoff team's defense to me.

True. Still not sure MacDonald helps that though.
Especially when you consider what else about the team indicates a playoff team? (yes I know I'm sandbagging my own team).

On a different note, you know the OP wasn't a CBJ fan right? Our fan base would just assume Clarkson sails off into the sunset and gets forgotten at this point.

The Flyers want to get rid of MacDonald and his contract ASAP, but they'd take a hard pass. After this season, with 3 year left and maybe 1-1.5 mil eaten, they can get rid of it without taking on that doozy. It just makes no sense.

I think the Flyers might do this for the cap relief, I am not sure why Columbus would do it. It doesn't appear Columbus would have to protect Clarkson in the expansion draft, they get cap relief for his contract and he is insured so they don't have to pay him.

Saying the flyers arent deep at RW is a joke. I'll let you do your own research to figure out who we have that can play RW. Also, Clarkson is as much a 'flyers' style player as we need a legit #1 goalie. Please stop living in the 70s and 80s.

Macdonald has as much, if not more of, a chance to rebound to a middle pairing defenseman than Clarkson does of being a productive middle 6 winger. He showed this last year when he was playing 20 minutes a night down the stretch when we lost MDZ to injury, and we made the playoffs.

And lastly, the hope is that Vegas takes Macdonald, as a middle pairing D. If not, we'll use his non-buyout proof contract to our own advantage.

This deal is absolute garbage for the flyers in quite literally every way possible.

Wasn't MacDonald caught in a numbers game last year? I seem to recall hearing something along those lines. I also think he has played reasonably well for the Flyers lately.

You don't get cap relief for having a player on LTIR. It actually complicates things further.
For the Flyers, it's better to just send Amac down to the AHL and get the 925k relief.

We don't need that type of cap relief. Hextall made getting rid of Pronger a priority because being on LTIR all season long sucks.

Even better than that, it's $950K this season, and goes up in 17-18 and again in 19-20.

2014-15: $550,000 + $375,000 = $925,000
2015-16: $575,000 + $375,000 = $950,000
2016-17: $575,000 + $375,000 = $950,000
2017-18: $650,000 + $375,000 = $1,025,000
2018-19: $650,000 + $375,000 = $1,025,000
2019-20: $700,000 + $375,000 = $1,075,000

From memory, isn't this kind of deal exactly how Columbus got Clarkson in the first place? Wanting someone to play for his money instead of paying for LTIR.

Yes, he was. And he will be this year as well, when MDZ comes back. He's overpaid for sure, but those saying he isnt a serviceable NHL defenseman are just buying into HF hype.

So the Flyers, who just recently paid Arizona to take the Pronger contract so they dont have to play the LTIR game, are going to give up an asset to put themselves back in? Stop being silly.

You dont need AMac, your D looks much better than last year, and thats fine. But Clarkson has literally no appeal to the Flyers in any way, shape, or form.

If he waives it to go to philly I'm pretty sure it gets voided.

Interesting theory you have there. Just one question - given this, how did he end up with an NMC in Columbus, then, seeing as though he had to waive it to come here?

Think about it and get back to me.

By and large Jackets and Flyers fans agree on this. It's fans of other teams that seem to think this has some kind of merit.

I lol'ed at the first part. Your posts are always good for a laugh.

And yes, I think Jackets fans are fairly rational in regards to the situation. Sometimes it's just difficult spelling something out and having someone come in and say "no, you know what? I don't like your logic. This may be a good move for you afterall."

You keep saying this....how did they pay? They traded Grossmann and Pronger for Gagner and 4th. We NEVER paid to get rid of Pronger. We got a 4th back in fact since Gagner and Grossmann are really a wash.

I guess I have to turn in my degree in CBAology :tears:

Yeah, turns out it can only be voided if it hasn't already kicked in at the time of the trade. Sort of like Nashville doesn't have to honour Subbans NMC because they traded for him a couple of days before it kicked in.

Forgive me, I thought we sent the fourth as well. Either way, I think you are splitting hairs. Would you prefer me to word it that we got extremely lucky that we were able to dump the contract on Arizona before Detroit did, and before Chicago had to pay to get rid of Bickell? Those were pretty expensive dumps, we just happened to do it the year before.

The point still stands - we didn't get ourselves out of the LTIR game to get back in it.
