Well based on potential... solid AAV.

However, he signed a 5.4m per year deal and will also be a UFA at 27. People forget how young he is....Pretty sure he could have been signed to a bridge deal of say...2-2.5 for two years.... then signed to maybe 6.5-7.5 for 7 years..... if he plays like a top d man

Its a great deal for todays cap.. but he could bolt in 6 years at 27 and/or sign for major money

Like the Morgan Reilly Deal, this could be great short term. but risky for UFA

Trouba becomes interesting because there is no reason he deserves more from Winnipeg so the only way he gets overpaid is by an offer sheet. Do the Bruins offer him 6.5 over 7?

Very solid deal all around for both sides of the deal. Would have thought Jones might get around 6-6.5, but the value is still great for him.

Excellent deal for the Jackets.
Cornerstone piece locked up for 6 years.

Considering his terrible track record in Columbus so far, it wouldn't have been a surprise.
This year they've resigned Jenner and Murray for under $3 mil/year, Savard for $4.2 mil/year (which includes a few UFA years) and William Karlsson for 1 mil/year. What a terrible truck record! All those players are underpaid if anything.

That is an AMAZING deal! I had wanted us to sign him for $5.5 million for 8 years or $6 million for 6 years. I would have preferred $5 million for 8 years or $5.5 million for 6 years. So, I will definitely take $5.4 million for 6 years. I would have loved this AAV for 8 years.

Why didn't he wait for an offer sheet? I'm sure he could've made more money.

Great deal for Columbus.

There's no chance Columbus wouldn't match, so there were never going to be any offer sheets, and he knew it. Everybody knew it except for a bunch of confused people on this website.

It's not like Saad or Hamilton where you've got guys who are the 4th or 5th most valuable parts on their team. Jones is the most valuable asset on the Blue Jackets. They'd match and move someone else if they had to fit under the cap.
