I'm going to copy this in here from a Canes fan:

Our pro scouting record in the last few years has been the biggest weakness of our FO.
That’s how it feels to me. I have questioned our pro scouting pretty much the whole time Jarmo was here. Other than trading for Saad then flipping him for Panarin I can’t think of too many great pro moves.

Who recommended Jarmo give 8 years for Severson anyway.

I'm not nearly as excited as most CBJ fans. Admittedly, I don't really know that much about the guy, so part of that is ignorance on my part. But I feel like this franchise has been holding its hand up to the hot burner on the stove for a long time. This just feels like taking your hand away from the stove. It's still going to take a long time to recover from the burns.
I wouldn't say that I'm necessarily excited, I am however, looking forward to a GM whose not going to be learning on the job through.

For better or worse, is TBD. But I would hope he's been able to learn from his mistakes in Atlanta and was able to learn some things from those around him in Carolina. And even more importantly, I hope he's able to recognize that he's not the smartest guy in the room and that he needs to put the best people around him. If we're building a FO similar to the structure of Carolina where you have guys that work directly underneath him that specialize in different areas, I might admit to feeling a bit excited... But getting the right people is extremely important, arguably more important than the Waddell hiring.

Reactions: We Want Ten
I hope they ask tomorrow whether there's plans to also hire a GM later, or is the president/GM position to stay. Could see them going either way depending on what Waddell wants to do with his time.

Althrough they'll probably dodge it with some form of "We'll consider it if a suitable person is available" comment that doesnt really mean anything.

I would also imagine if they were gonna do something about coaching that it would get done sooner rather than later.

So nothing he's done elsewhere in the last decade matters at all? Or are we really leaning into the whole "he was just a figurehead who did nothing and probably had to be actively prevented from harming Carolina by the Real People In Charge Behind the Curtain Who Weren't Him" schtick here? Carolina hadn't made the playoffs in ten years and finally broke through his first full season as GM (his fourth year with the team). That means something.

I'm sure the answer is somewhere in the middle, but again, since this is Columbus, the only Correct Answer is the most negative possible one.

Funny, I don't recall posting that anything that happened in Carolina didn't matter, doesn't count or anything of the sort. I was aware of his time in Carolina.I just remember him as Atlanta's GM.

It's much like Scotty Bowman. He coached in places like St. Louis, Montreal, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo, but when I think of Bowman I think of him as the Habs coach.

Chill

Will hopefully have some inkling of the plan moving forward from the press conference (search for designated GM or no, etc.)

Waddell has a daunting task in front of him. 2 straight years of last in the East, an unsettled goalie situation, a couple of dubious long term deals (Severson and to a lesser extent Gaudreau), recent top 10 draft picks that are still living on potential and to me show signs of future problems (KJ & Jiricek), Russians who may or may not want to return to the Motherland (Voronkov & Chinakov), Laine and his uncertain availibilty. a coaching staff that may (should?) be replaced in its entirety and lastly, what to do about the chili chant.

Give the guy a chance.

I really don’t see why people think this job is so bad. We have one of the best payroll situations in the league (even when you include Elvis, Laine, and Severson contracts) and are one of the youngest teams. We also have a mostly full deck of our own draft picks.

This isn’t a Baron wasteland where you’re starting from scratch.

I think that's why he took the job. That and these guys love challenges.
Had an officer at the company I worked for for 30 years whose hobby was buying small, struggling companies and turning them around. He made this wine barrel making company which was about to fold into a success. Just liked to see if he was up to saving companies and people's livelihoods. He was a good dude.

Well, you see, the arena is built on the site of a former penitentiary and is haunted.

Curious to hear today if he has a timeline in place for picking a GM. Draft and free agency are in a month.

Because fundamentally, the franchise will never shake the stink of "lol Columbus." Florida has been a juggernaut for three years now and still hasn't shaken their own stink.

There's also a guy on the Sens board right now claiming that Columbus drafted amazingly between 2008-2013 and has been a barren wasteland of terrible drafting since 2015. No one who isn't one of us is going to bother looking at facts. It's always just "lol Columbus."

None of that will go away until we are either contending for the conference every year or win a few cups.

Yeah I can understand outsiders saying this stuff because, quite frankly, they only know the surface level things about the team. We know more because we actually care about it and we have people saying the same stuff. That’s what I don’t understand.

There is a lot to like about the team in the long term, but in the short term, let’s accept there is a lot of work to be done.

Captain went through major personal tragedy at end of last season
No actual 1C yet
Defense can’t stop anybody
Goalie situation is not good
Star wings are not what we hoped they would be
Plenty of young players expressed dissatisfaction with team last year
Really weird locker room dynamic that we don’t understand
Most hyped draft pick in years had atypical/freakish injury and we haven’t heard much about his recovery
KJ hasn’t been used as a center
Jiricek can’t defend 1-on-1
Much of hope is pinned on young guys achieving full potential
Teams that finished 12-15th in Eastern Conference are ahead of us in rebuild so they will be hard to pass
