Leafs have lost a few in a row, and so did Boston up until winning just now. Boston is now ahead of the leafs, and in the 8th spot. They are effectively the team we are chasing - they're 7 pts up and we have 3 games in hand. Very doable.

With 40 some odd games to play.

To think that some allegedly reputable site gives the CBJ a 3% chance of getting in is abzzzzzzzzzzurd.

Just to balance out the helium guys...in addition to Toronto, who I doubt we have too much to worry about we do have to worry about the Caps, Bruins and Florida. Two out of those three make it we're toast.

Throw the NYR in there too. The CBJ are currently 9 points out of 4th place in the division behind them.

I wouldn't worry about the Panthers. I don't see them keeping this up and I think the Caps take a step back too. I don't think 3rd in the Metro is totally out of reach. But I wouldn't quite close the door fully on the Leafs unless they ship people out left and right. I do worry about the Sens, Flyers, and hell even New Jersey coming from behind and really making the East interesting.

You're right but I think the Rangers are too strong with Lundqvist getting better as the season goes on, which is his m.o. and Nash playing like a beast. I don't see them falling out of third unless the injury bug bites them a whole lot. Maybe they even catch the Isles if the Isles slip a bit.

If the CBJ continue to win 75-80% of their total remaining points they will make the playoffs... If they lose two or three in a row more than once they are history...

When you have 4 teams ahead of you in your division that are on pace for over 100 points.. /shrug

Not a lot you can do about it other than beat them when you get the chance.

This team picked up 55 points over the final 44 games last season, which resulted in the #1 WC spot with 93 points. Of course there was an eight-game win streak included in that.

55 points over the final 44 this season? Puts the team at 94 points. So basically...just do what they did last year haha.

There are some very optimistic CBJ fans posting here. I don't think many realistic ones, but hey I hope I'm wrong.

Playoffs? I don't see it happening, this team just isn't as good as previous years.

Welcome to the dark side. I was feeling a bit lonely. I wouldn't say they aren't as good, I'd say they aren't playing as well as last year. Even this stretch, the results are there but how they are being achieved has me worried.

Plus losing to Phoenix and Toronto wipe out good efforts against better teams.

Still possible to make it but we can't use up those 13 losses that are left too quickly.

Last night depressing- and I started this thread just a few days ago!
Becoming as manic as the Jackets!
24-13-6 still doable, but not with level of play shown last night, especially 1st period.
And fear that this year starting to look aberrational in the past week - 93/94 pts may not sniff the last spot. Watching too many W's and 3 pt games for the other bubble teams, and the 3 spot and one of the wild cards from our division are moving in wrong direction. Did not think Rangers would keep streak going in California (wrong), and they are now 12-1 in last 13. Had even more thought that Caps would come back to the pack - not yet, as they are 11-1-4 in last 16. Bruins 3-0-3 since we blasted them on 12/27. Panthers 7-3-1 last 11. Only Toronto has been cooperative, but we decided to gift wrap a 4 pt game in first period. One loss last night does not doom the effort, but hill getting steeper. Silver lining - some/all of those teams have to come back to earth sometime...just hope they don't wait until too late.

We went 10-1-1 to just get to where we are. We have to come back to earth as well.

I wish it could happen. But this year I can't see it. There are too many guys (Matt, Dubie, Cam I am looking at you) playing below their level of last year. To play at the pace that will be needed, it will require everyone to play at the top of their games. I just don't see that happening this year.

Not to mention Murray, Jenner and AA are still injured and may be for a while longer.

We ll carry the Flag, but I m a little bit pessimistic about this season, I can't explain why... I know we can't use injuries as an excuse ( as T. Dreiser wrote "life is made for the strong, there is no mercy in it for the weak", not sure about this phrase's polite correctness and actuality in our feminized world :dunno: ) and now our team trying hard to get the playoff spot but sometimes it feels as absurd Sysiphus heroism (I want to be mistaken), this year our PP is brilliant ( thanks to Brad Larsen), but our newest problem is 5v5/60 play, really miserable without perspectives, our endless problem - injuries ( no wonder, as Carter said in Final Destination :tvhappy: - this sh..t/injuries/can circle around and get us all again and again). Summa summarum I believe our future is bright, ASG, core players signed, our prospects are fantastic, (our new coach will be marvelous?).

Looks like 24-12-6 is the new goal. :help:

Of our last 42 games, 26 are against teams ahead of us in the standings. 22 games away/ 20 home.

11 points out of the wild card.

or 8 points out of last place in the East and 10 points out of last in the entire league.

Which seems more realistic right now?

The only regular player on the team who is a + player right now is Nick Foligno at +3. Chew on that for a moment. 5 on 5 play is terrible, even through the winning streak.

10 points out of last in the entire league more achievable. We can't play against Metropolitan in this season and now it is starting such games.

They'll be somewhere in the middle. 6-13 overall. Or as some would say "the worst case scenario."

imho by Bob contract's prolongation FO gave a sign about start of controlled ( namely controlled, not Oilers like chaotic) tanking. December's streak (so wishful, but unexpected) at first had goal to "save face" ( in the eyes of another NHLers and fans) of our ASG players and then secondarily to test parallelly " market" for possible playoff spot ( if Lord has mercy on us). When was realized that both WSH and NYR are hot ( as before) and playoff wildcard ( practically) is unachievable FO signed Bob, ( because) no need to wait anymore, nothing changes... Now final retooling analysis before deadline and high draft pick and then ...

Does anyone here actually believe that NHL teams consider "tanking" at the halfway point in a season? At anytime for that matter?

All "tanking" threads/posts should be replaced by links to old Jerry Springer shows. At least Jerry Springer shows could have some small chance of having a relationship to reality.

I don't get it either. This whole notion of some decision to tank is among the dumbest things I've seen on here. And that's saying a lot.

Bad teams may not try to get better as a form of tanking (Edmonton), but average to good teams are not going to actively get worse to intentionally fail. That's a construct that message board fans believe in - not reality.

While I don't believe the players would intentionally tank, they sometimes do subconsciously, perhaps maybe even consciously. when they fail to respond to a coach's methods.

And teams "tank" when they trade off starters for picks and prospects at the deadline.

Or resting starters at the end of the season to possibly improve their draft spot or possibly set up a better play-off match-up.

Might be semantics but I think some degree of tanking exists. Subtly but still there.
