Bad news for Primeau's career.

He has kind of saved it by dominating in the AHL for 25 games, and if he had carried the Rocket to the championships he'd be caught up a lot more.

But now, Primeau will be on the bench doing nothing, and Fowler will lead the Rocket to a championship.

People who are giving up on Primeau just don't get it. This is not an atypical development curve for a good NHL goaltender and he very well could be an NHL stud just as easily as he might never find the consistency that he has been searching for.

Letting Primeau walk after all of the development time only to have him blossom elsewhere is a very real possibility and I think we need to try and keep him even if that means Dobes starting in Laval next season. Of course this is all contingent on Primeau signing a short/cheap deal as he certainly will have garnered NHL wide interest again.

This is eminently logical both from the point of view of asset management and the dynamics of goalie development.

That said, there are some less tangible factors here at play that need to be considered. Is the management and coaching staff ready to trust Primeau one more time? Abysmal backup goaltending was one of the major factors that nearly derailed our season, and it forced the management to scramble and promote another raw goalie prematurely.

Even with Dobes up, they felt compelled to lean on Montembeault so heavily, that I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to sign a veteran backup to a short term deal this offseason.

What about Primeau himself? Does he feel at ease as part of this group that has already seen him fail? Not unreasonable to think he would prefer to start with a clean slate somewhere else.

Primeau was outstanding in the latter part of last season and actually outplayed Montembault after Allen was traded. He played behind an absolutely abysmal defensive game to start this season and his confidence took a hit. He went back ti Laval and has been nothing short of dominant. Basically he had a small sample playing in conditions that any goalie would fail in sandwiched between two longer samples where he was outstanding.

I think people are nothing short of foolish to write him off as an NHL goaltender at his age with the displays of dominance that he has shown since we drafted him. Much like almost every goaltender ever he has been inconsistent but has never been tested long enough at the NHL level to arrive at a meaningful conclusion.

I don't know what Hughes will do with him but I would not be shocked to see him emerge as a very good NHL goaltender and a potential #1. I am not asserting that he will reach that level but it is just blind stupidity when I hear people (not you) calling him a bust. It's as though they have never watched the game or if they have they simply haven't been paying attention.

They did the right thing by sending him down as the team was playing horrid defence in front of him and he was shell shocked and needed a confidence boost. He quite literally regained his game immediately upon returning to Laval and reached even higher heights than he ever has .

You make some great points about the unknowns with his mental make up and whether Montreal is the market for him. I just think he needs at least one more shot so that we can find out.

I would expect them to go to Primeau if Dobes sh*ts the bed........let's hope they don't need to do this.
