Player Discussion Cayden Primeau Part II

Abeischer.

His numbers were *a lot* better. He had an .892 save percentage to end the season after the trade and then had a winning record and a .900 save percentage the following year.

Much, much, much better than Primeau. I was no fan of Aebischer, but those are the kind of numbers that don't stand out in a negative way for a backup, but Primeau's .844 this season is simply atrocious and being .886 over 54 career games is ample evidence that he's not nearly good enough.

I'm really disappointed that he wasn't placed on waivers and assigned to the AHL today.

A message needs to be sent to the guys in that locker room that there are standards in the organization and he well below them. He does not give his teammates a chance to win when he's in the lineup and he is not playing at NHL level.

To allow him to stay with the team sends the wrong message to the guys in the room and to the fans who buy tickets.

This is the first time I've been truly disappointed with this management team.

Matheson didn't miss a shift and got right back out on PP1. Waiving Primeau today without a viable back up option to replace him wouldn't do a thing.

Marty has missed many opportunities with his vets and has passed every time.

What do you mean without a viable backup option?

We literally couldn't do any worse. How is Hughes not a viable back up option?

And it certainly would "do a thing" it would tell the locker room that being the 75th best goaltender in the NHL is well below what this team deems as acceptable.

Comparing Matheson to Primeau is just silly. Matheson is nowhere near being the worst defenseman in the NHL. Not even close. Primeau literally is the worst goaltender in the league.

I mean you can't just waive Primeau and bring up Dobes, it's not fair to Dobes where he needs to be the guy down in the AHL all season. It doesn't make sense to disrupt his development just to make a 'statement' by waiving Primeau after a game where he wasn't great but most goals were a disasterclass by Matheson.

Hughes has played like 6 games in North America and is doing a good tandem job with Dobes right now. I'd prefer to leave Laval alone which is why you'd look for a trade where there's a team who wants to gamble on Primeau long term and can afford to move a veteran back-up goalie in exchange.

Matheson played a horrendous game and if you want to start with accountability, you start in game and send a message that it doesn't matter how good you are, or how tenured you are, if you make unacceptable plays and are the most minus 3 a minus 3 can be; you don't get to play anymore.. you certainly don't get gifted all the surplus offensive opportunities in a game.

If you want to start with accountability, start there.. not just waiving Primeau after the game without putting an actual plan in place. The Matheson messaging would be far louder than doing that with Primeau.

Do it Cayden.
Our GM is a players agent running this team like a players agent.

He should have been waived after that Boston game but now I think they have no choice. He can’t be trusted on the ice; allowing 4-5 goals each time even for 10 min

Monty already been pulled 4 times this season so he’s probably not able to withstand a true #1 schedule. We need a reliable backup.

Bring up Hughes, might as well see what we got in him. Keep Dobes in the A, don’t want to rush him behind this team.

One of the worst goalies I've seen. Dude sucks. He looks so small in front of his net, despite being 6'3".

Now, he could be a late bloomers but it's not looking great. Seems like the NHL game is just too much for him.

This is so bizarre they keep him still even when the window closed long ago, whats going on? No other goalie?

I would call up DJ premier ahead primeau. At least he could do some beatboxing while ihe is in net and bring joy to Habs fans

He has absolutely no sense of where his net is, gives up a ton of rebounds he shouldn’t, has one of the worst glove hands I’ve seen out of his generation of NHL goalie, and get beats clean on shots that the worst of goalies in this league should be able to track. He’s big and athletic but that works against him as he over commits a lot because of it. He’s not an NHL goalie right now and nothing he’s shown so far indicates he ever will be. It looks like he was a late round draft pick that got a boost of attention because he had a nice surge in college but because of that we all overrated what we actually had.

I think Primeau may have been rushed and you are right on Dobes, as to me it's just doubling down on a prior development error.

Drafted 7 years ago and he was rushed? I got a taste early but ended up back in the A. He wasn't rushed.

He should have stayed and played college hockey longer than 2 years.
Should Fowler stay longer? Primeau's numbers were very comparable to Fowler's.
He played about 150 AHL games, one long playoff run where he was exceptional. He got games here and there in Montreal but he imo wasn't rushed, he simply isn't a goalie with NHL potential.

I can't prove it. But he was killing it then went to AHL and I think the ice time he got dropped because obviously he wasn't the no.1 guy as he is the young guy, and then he looks like he stalled. Was Hutson left in College too long ? Him no. I'd rather err on letting a player stew longer than not though.

It's a fair debate and we probably agree more than we disagree. Personally I would keep Fowler in college a 3rd year while Dobes continues developing.

I really don't think there's a need for a "being rushed" discussion. He's slow as hell and has a tough time making saves on easy shots. That wasn't going to get better. It was obvious in his first few starts and still is obvious now.

Some players can't make the jump from the AHL to the NHL because of the speed of the game. Same thing for some goalies. Primeau is technically somewhat sound so it's fine in the AHL but he's too slow for the NHL.
