Caufield gonna make nearly 10M $ (including bonuses) over the next 2-3 seasons. With the actual state of the economy and the World, the kid wanted to cash in as much and as soon as possible. He did not make any gift to the Habs.
Well he signed for 8 years and gave up 3 or 4 years of his free agent years...all while signing a contract that, assuming he continues on his current trajectory, will look like a bargain sooner rather than later.

That's why his contract was front loaded like that.

Note

Note: Vegas about to win the cup with Eichel making 10M, Stone 9.5M, and Pietrangelo 8.8M.
Or, Florida will win with Barkov making 10M, Tkachuk 9.5M, and Bobrovsky 10M.
that's fine - their prerogative. Note: I did say 100pt Center will be paid more than Suzuki. a 1D will make more too (possibly Guehl)? and as for goalie - anything over $5M is grossly overpaid.

Tkachuck - if Calgary followed my logic during after his ELC - he should have been signed long term . and if he didn;t want to sign, then he should have been traded then and there (for much greater asset return). I would never be GM for a team and allow a player to continue playing if "they" don't want to be on the team long term. if the team doesn't want to pay long term then, the writing is on the wall - trade them.

Makes alot less on the back end...............give the guy a break.
It averages out.............no big deal.

Have I heard that right about a 10 million signing bonus? holly crap! I guess that's not my money. lol

5mill signing bonus for this year, 5 million signing bonus for next year
They add onto the annual base salary for that year, and all 8 years avg to 7.85M per for the cap.

This is nothing by the way.. you should of seen the signing bonus Bergevin gave Carey lol
Price's 84 Million dollar contract? 70M in signing bonuses... lol

All this cash for just putting your Name on Paper, it's a hell of a thing lol

We're the bicep club, we don't eat those.

CRINGE.
The fact he asked trevor if Spencer Knight was da goalie? Ffs, this is the 1st round and he has no idea on the players.

We got 4 x 5th round pics.. what do you think Trevor? Uhmm how about trading all 5th rounders for a 2nd?? Actually a great idea, yet mb laughs.. he reminds me of the wwf dude when he walks in arms a flailing.

Really surprised they were able to get his contract under 8M over 8 years, Caufield clearly was amenable to taking a bit less.

Good for him and the team.
We were chatting a couple months ago about what Caufield should be paid and I said a quarter mil less than Suzuki.

I don't think guhles agent is going to like that. The fans would love it
Maybe not but he's probàbly going to get extended after next season. It's the same thing as Suzuki. If you do it prematurely you can probably get a better deal. If he waits it out, he could probably reach around 6 AAV but if they spin it with the most recent contracts and taking a bit of à haircut, they could definitely lock him down long term for under 6 AAV

Like I said, then and a few days ago...I never debated what Caufield "should" get, but rather what he "could" get.

I didn't think expecting him to take less than Suzuki was an expectation we should have, although I would have been and am pleased he did.

But let's be real, if Caufield wasn't amenable to take less, he certainly could have commanded more.

Sorry, the athletic is telling me that this is only a mediocre deal for a player who is going to max out as a solid second liner. At least it offsets the Suzuki deal which per them is one of the worst contracts in the entire league. Better luck next time.

f*** the Athletic.

Also really looking forward to people no longer citing or mentioning every BS rumour.

Don't kid yourself, most of those probably came from Brisson's camp.

The development and exposure of the Q is important for Hockey Québec and the development of our young kids.

F*** Hockey Québec. I'm from one of those many, Many, MANY Quebec families that had kids get hosed by them.

Pezzetta is making the kind of money the Leafs add to contracts solely for vanity ($600,000 extra per year to Matthews because he plays in the "six" (416 area code) plus 34k extra for his number.)

This true? If so then Dubas' tenure was even more of a gong show than I believed.

I would agree if every year canadian teams could pick one player from Arizona, Texas, California or Florida teams for free with no cap hit and the league pays for them; I mean would their fans even notice?

IIRC California has a steep state income tax especially if you live and work in L.A. Also hockey players love NYC but same deal.

Unfortunately, some will claim our two best players aren't worth 5M. :(

5 for 2 players under 6?!?! Preposterous!

Look man I just want to read content about how according to advanced stats, this is actually the year the leafs are going to win the cup and go 16-0 in the playoffs on their way to doing so. Real hockey fans know that Matthew Knies’ underlying numbers point to him being better than Suzuki already and will be a top 20 player in the league by next Christmas’s

Without a doubt he could’ve held out for more. Our hope was that he’s sign for Suzuki money and he did. We should be ecstatic about this.

Not only is it a good value contract, it also reinforces an artificial ceiling for the team. That’s the bar by which other players will negotiate for the foreseeable future.

Great deal.
