Originally wasn't too happy because he couldn't do a pull-up but we could use more speed so I'll take a chance on him

To me, that's almost a plus. any competent trainer can teach even an out of shape person how to do a single pull up in 6 weeks or less. So, it tell me the kid didn't train for the combine. But, get him in the weight room with a world class trainer add some real strength to his already strong skill set and what do you have?

Look, I'll be happy to eat crow if it comes to that, but I'm expecting each of our last 2 picks to be total disappointments. Busts, to put a word to it.

And Cal Dietz at UM is a world class strength trainer. Mittelstadt will have plenty of opportunity to be with this teammates while in the weight room and that will be under Cal's eye.

Same.

That said, nothing would make me happier than people quoting my stuff from tonight, in a few years showing me how dumb I am. I just don't see it happening.

I don't understand the negativity. This kid is a stud hockey player and we're lucky to get him at 8. Can never have enough speed and skill.

Great job JBot!

I don't give a **** where he was rated. He's a soft, perimeter, east-west player. Combine that, with softy Nylander, the organizational derth of D. I have no ****ing idea what they think they're building, but it isn't a winner.

I'm sending happy thoughts your way. You seem way too angry over this.

I don't see how Mittelstadt is *that much* different from Cale Makar. You're looking at skill and trying to project it without having many successful comparables to look at. This kid has huge skill, but he's a not a...uh...fan of working out. So, at this point it just comes down to his personality. If he's willing to do the work, he's likely to be a good player and could even be great. If he's not, he could be a bust (Brett Connolly, etc.). Who knows. You can think this kid has other issues that may interfere with his ability to be a successful NHL player, but you can't deny the skill.

Adding him to a group that has Eichel/Reinhart/O'Reilly/Asplund/Pu/Nylander and now Mittelstadt, plus guys like Baptiste/Bailey/Fasching & Rodrigues.

I'll take it. Now we just need to add depth on defense with two 2nd round picks tomorrow

I'm a fan of this pick. Once it looked pretty clear that Makar and Heiskanen weren't going to make it to 8, Mittelstadt was my target. Skill and speed up front were still issues, and they now have two guys in the pipeline in Nylander and Mittelstadt that ooze skill, speed, and upside. There is certainly some more risk to Mittelstadt than to a guy like Rasmussen, but I much prefer drafting for upside.
