Player Discussion Casey Mittelstadt (2017, 8th) #37 - Part III

Our worst forward by quite a margin right now. He constantly has the puck knocked off his stick, especially when he tries to carry it in transition.

At this point I want to see him in the A just to see if he can produce as the 1C at that level. If he can't do it there, it may give you a clearer idea of what he needs to work on.

Casey Mittelstadt is not getting enough positive results here to even build on something he's doing. He's just doing enough to not suck out loud, and that's not what you want a young man focusing on night after night. He needs to figure out what works against professionals at a lower level and then take that awareness with him back to the NHL.

Get him in Rochester ASAP - he's still young enough to develop strength, speed, and most importantly... confidence. The kid has time to grow yet - just give it to him with the Amerks.

I was a huge Mitts advocate but it’s clear he’s not developing here. I honestly don’t think I’ve seen too many players that lack speed, strength, decision making and work ethic like him. I’m thinking it’s a confidence thing for him being as young as he is. He was always the best player on the ice as he was coming up naturally and I don’t think he’s put in the work off ice that he says he has, to get better. He’s a liability every times he’s out there and living in his own head. I won’t call him a bust, yet, he’s only 20. However, he needs to go to the Amerks to develop. Tage Thompson is a much better player and had to do his time.

One day, I’m hoping the world aligns and we see a
Mitts-Cozens-TT line at the NHL level. On paper, if they develop, that can be one hell of a top 6 line.

We have a ton of recent history of how rushing prospects to the NHL doesn't work. Seems like Casey is on that path. Hope they finally send him down so he can work on his game at an appropriate level and he can develop some confidence.

Botts belatedly corrected his mistake with Tage, and he finished last season in Rochester, and has been improving and gaining confidence ever since (until his unfortunate injury).

Hopefully he'll come to the same realization with Mitts. I'll happily eat these words, if Mitts proves me wrong, but it seems to me at this point that he's in serious danger of being ruined. He simply doesn't belong at this level, yet.

Way too early to write him off. If he does get traded, can we get a Joki-like return, please?

He's legitimately the worst player on the roster, and that's really saying something. I get that he's young and a lot can change in a couple good developmental seasons...but his performance so far in 113 NHL games is very concerning to me.

What scares me is that he hasn't improved in any area whatsoever. And for a kid who was ranked the #2 prospect in all of hockey by some his complete lack of any offensive impact is troubling. He just doesn't seem to have that "it" factor.

I saw all I needed to see to believe in Jack when he roofed the first shot he ever took against Ottawa. With Casey, I still am waiting for that "wow" moment. He needs to be sent down and worked on by Taylor before we have ourselves another high pick forward that doesn't help this offense get to respectable levels.

I'd prefer to not trade a 20 year old former 8OA for scraps. Still lots of time and development left. Rochester seems like the clear move

You really should do a little research because there is precedent that drafted players take more than two years to develop.

I agree that he needs to be in the AHL. I don't agree that he is slow but I do see him missing simple plays that a guy in a beer league wouldn't miss like accepting a simple pass or letting the puck get away from him(no I am not saying beer league guys are better)

My point being it definitely seems like mental.

I'm concerned his long-term offensive potential will be stunted because he's spent so much time just trying to keep his head above water at this level.

Again, if Dea was up and playing Mitts’ minutes, doing the same things (Limited shot production, spotty at best scoring) but Casey was Thompsoning it up in Rochester...who is worse for that?

I wish we could get answers from Botts to why Mitts is not in the AHL

Doesn't make much sense to healthy scratch him for any period of time. Step in the right direction

Send him down. Let him play 20 minutes a night, work on the first powerplay and in the top 4 PKers (something he doesn't even sniff in Buffalo). Let him work on his defensive responsibilities and be "the man" in offensive situations instead of trying to just hold on shift to shift.

It's past time to do it.

I actually like his defensive strides this season. He is just so ineffective offensively. I'd like to see a more active and affective forecheck with a less hot potato approach in the O zone. He needs to make room for himself and not just toss the puck when under pressure.
But yeah, they need to pull the trigger

At the beginning of the season I thought all he needed was to get stronger and and more experienced. I thought the AHL was the best place for him, but I expected to see some improvement if he stayed with the Sabres. I haven't seen any progress this year. Now I consider him a bust. If you're lucky you'll get 2 good shifts/game out of this kid. You can sign undrafted players that are more effective than him. Maybe Chicago wants to make another deal or we can trade him to Edmonton for Pool Party.

Casey's flaws have been obvious for a while, so, of course, this organization has done nothing about it. He's not fast enough to push the pace in the NHL. He comes back and plays the part of the defensively responsible center, but he can't play a "200 foot game" because he can't maintain enough pace to get all the way to the offensive zone. He's generally been used as the primary puck carrier/distributor (like he was in college/international hockey), but he can't skate well enough to be that guy in the NHL. It's just not going to happen.

His best asset is his hands. I think he needs to become the kind of player who makes a living by getting lost in the O-ffensive zone, getting open, pouncing on loose pucks around the net, etc. - basically, utilizing his hands in small spaces in the offensive zone. He appears to naturally be more of a passer, so it might never work out, but I mean...they have to try something to help this kid at least attempt to become useful.

Let’s not pretend he’s a lost cause. He’s a second year player who has insane puck skills, speed, passing, and competitiveness.

He needs to go to Rochester, work on his game, and have Taylor build his confidence. It’s seems to be working for Thompson. Plenty of kids get sent down and come back stronger. Jokiharju is a case in point.
