So, Comcast crapped out after the 1st period for me, so no Gamecenter. Anyone have any thoughts on Rattata and how he played?

I spent the whole game thinking, this guy is slow af, then near the end of the game he grabbed a loose puck, did a quick 360 and was off to the races. He made a couple nice passes and went to the net, there's some skill there I think, and willingness to mix it up on the boards and get in front of the net.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Lindy comes back, I'm guessing at that point Rattie and Ryan are basically in competition for the remaining lineup spot. Either is better than Nestrasil right now IMO.

It's funny how often a team will lose to the Canes and their fans lose their minds on the message boards talking about how their coach should be fired. Or the coach actually gets fired. This must be the worst team in history to ever be 3 points out of a playoff spot.

And something I don't know that anybody else noticed, I certainly didn't notice it the first time around, but the play Slavin made on the McClement goal was beautiful. Little head fake and move as if he was going to drive the net, just to create himself some space to make the cross-ice pass. It's a good sign that maybe he's got more to offer on the offensive side of things, that's the kind of thing you don't try unless you've got a lot of confidence going.

I can't help but look at what Eric is doing in Minnesota and imagine if we had that scoring help where we'd be. 2G 1A tonight. 33 points in 37 games. The same amount he scored for us last season in 63 games. Granted, we probably don't get the same guy they have but it still stings to see him leave and then revert to the player we needed.

It seems like the guy is invisible for some reason in our evaluation, but hell of a game by Brock McGinn tonight as well.

Prior to last season my long term hopes for McGinn was that he'd be glued to Jordan to begin this season because I thought he had the smarts and the motor to play that role with a bit of skill. Then he played last year and I thought he was dumb as a post and wondered if he'd ever even make it as a 4th liner.

This year I've been pleasantly surprised with how much improvement he's made. He's playing within the system perfectly. He's also been a much better passer than I expected. The 2 on 1 with Ryan where they clowned Doughty was the highlight but he's made a few short passes in tight spaces the last couple nights that arent flashy, but difficult and extremely important.

with the flyers and other teams not going at quite the unsustainable pace they were before, sportsclub stats now gives us a 55% chance of making the playoffs at 93 points

a few weeks ago, that ~55% chance was at 96 points

This was and is exactly how I viewed him as well. Hopefully he keeps it up.

So what are the chances of our actually *having* 93 points?

sportsclubstats has us at 34% to make the playoffs

ive started questioning their simulation accuracy in the last few months though

toronto somehow has a 20% higher chance of making the playoffs than ottawa, despite ottawa being 2 pts up in the standings with even games played

So to hit 93 points, the Canes need to play at a 97 point pace the rest of the way (vs. the 88 point pace they've played at over the first 38 games).

The pessimist in me says that's a tall order.
The optimist in me says that since November 1st, they've been playing at a 95.7 point pace so they can do this.

since the beginning of this season next season has always been the year im "expecting" playoffs (as in, in the beginning of the year prediction poll next year, i will vote for them to sneak in)

this year would be gravy

but damn would it be nice to make it

It's not crazy, I mean we're 4 points out of the last spot with 2 games in hand. That loss to NJ looks even worse in hindsight though. Can't be losing games like that and realistically expect to be a playoff team.

Try being a Cubs fan. They won game 7 of the world series on my Dad's 80th birthday. He went through probably 15 phases of life before seeing them win and he remained a fan. And for a LOT of those seasons, they were just plain brutal.

Since the last time the Canes made the playoffs I have lived in 3 different states, had 3 different cars, had 4 different jobs, gotten married, had two kids, changed religious affiliation, lost my father-in-law and two other family members, bought a house, lost most of my hair, learned to play the guitar, learned to manage my chronic depression, and migrated from one side of the political spectrum to the other.

That's a lot of ****

This should be it's own thread. "What's happened to you since the last time the Canes made the playoffs."

I would think the first step would be to stop watching the Canes....
