The entire thread of the main board is "OMG Nashville got fleeced!!!" from everyone else and Preds fans saying "Trotz finally made a good move"
Because:
1) Barron has been featured in a metric f***ton of random Habs fans proposals, which has convinced people he's near worthless, and
2) Folks still think of Nashville as that place where if you've never heard of the defenseman in question, that probably means they're good. Recent examples that would be cited include Fabbro and Ekholm.

So they're severely overvaluing Carrier and slightly undervaluing Barron.

Previous 4 seasons - those are decent numbers, esp if he played against top lines as I’m reading. Also why are people calling him undersized?

From NHL.com

Height: 6′2″
Weight: 203 lb
Born: 2/18/1991
Birthplace: St-Elzéar, Quebec, CAN

He's generously listed at 5'11" and 170-ish lbs.

Physically, he's a wiry guy, not overly strong, can get pushed around, etc. He's been in a couple of fights and usually is the one that comes out of it broken.

So, yeah. He's not a big, intimidating player by any stretch. 😂

PS: He's from Quebec City.

A mediocre defenseman for a player that...probably won't even become that. Well played Barry
All of our guys have looked bad most of this season ... until the injury plague hit and we had to play our AHL guys and Bruno dialed back the stupid. Carrier isn't a Hall of Famer, but he can be an average NHL dman if used correctly.

We get back a guy who was a 7/8 on a bad team and who Canadiens fans say in timid in his own zone.

I'm OK with Carrier, he works hard and seems like he cares. He's best as a 5/6 and not being put in a spot where he can be physically overmatched. We overslotted him and it's not really his fault he couldn't fill that higher responsibility better.

As you say, now a bigger but worse player coming back.

And another player we justt signed a contract with to just turn around and dump. Trotz is either a poor planner or extremely impatient.

Barron is frustrating.

Offensively he's talented, you'll see him skate into the zone and just rip it. He'll get points.

Defensively he's a deer in the headlights, soft, and incredibly inconsistent.

He's making progress in the D Zone, but it's gonna take time.

All he'd need is to throw pointless hits and sounds like a perfect fit for Trotz and Bruno.

I think barron is being undervalued because montreal has just a ton of young good nhl and prospect dmen right now. Barron is near the bottom of that pile but really, it's a great pile.

Hutson
Guhle
Reinbacher
Xhekaj
Mailloux
Struble
Engstrom
Konyushkov

So losing a guy like barron is pretty meaningless at this point.

Trotz probably figure they need to swing for the fences just a bit more and think barron has higher upside/longterm potential than carrier at 28. The d pipeline is pretty dry so may as well start filling it a bit in a down year.

Skates in a deep crouch which sometimes seems to make it hard for him to change directions. He looked alert last game with inzone coverage. In offensive zone he can roam a bit but no change of speed or deception and not comfortable with the puck tho he can outrun checkers a bit - but without purpose or ability to see how he’s opening lanes. Trouba almost took his head off because he’s just uncoordinated and lacks awareness - everyone in the arena knows that is Trouba’s side but him. Looks like his legs are operated by someone else sometimes. Doesn’t do anything with authority. His legs make up for it and he plays well for stretches until someone spots something and they pull at the thread. Needs a very steady partner. Maybe someone with a good first pass and positioning where Barron can help by carrying and jumping into the rush. He paired well with Matheson who carries well but can’t pass. Unlikely pairing but it worked. Both could outskate their errors enough of the time until they couldn’t. You get the project we get the solid third pair RD to replace Kovacevic and that allows us to now move Savard. Carrier looks like he plays too hard for his size and will need to reel it in. He’ll be pumped to be a Hab tho

I think this is purely a move to save some cap.

No way Trotz would gut the defense even more at this point. Although, I'm not sure how much worse (if all) Barron even is compared to Carrier.

I believe this move sets up the Cozens deal. No-neck press conference tomorrow I believe is set to make both deals official.

My best guess:
Novak
Tampa 1st
Middle prospect

Cozens at 0% retained.

Carrier and Novak cancel our the cap and with that, you have some tidy work in getting rid of two mistakes you never should've made.

Man, if that's the deal that gets us Cozens, I'll take back everything I've said about Trotz..

I'm also a Jackets fan, and I vividly remember similar "glowing reviews" of Harris, who's basically the left-handed Carrier.

Do we have a disproportionate number of players in common with Montreal? By my quick count we have about 350 players who have ever played for the Preds and roughly 10% of them have also played for the Canadians. Can anyone think of another team with so many common players?

I might have missed a couple, but a quick rundown of the all-time roster gives me:

Alexander Radulov
Alexander Carrier
Alexei Emelin
Andrei Kostitsyn
Anthony Richard
Blake Geoffrion
Daniel Carr
Denis Gurianov
Eric Richard
Francis Bouillon
Frederic Allard
Hal Gill
JJ Daigneault
Jared Tinordi
Michael McCarron
Mike Ribeiro
Oleg Petrov
PA Parenteau
PK Subban
Patric Kjellberg
Radek Bonk
Reid Simpson
Rem Pitlick
Rory Fitzpatrick
Sebastian Bordeleau
Sergei Kostitsyn
Sergei Zholtok
Shea Weber
Tomas Vokoun
Yanic Perreault
Yannick Weber
Yves Sarault
