Hopefully we’re not the Capitals the ten years before they won their Cup. However, I believe the LVGK were created for the sole reason of getting the Caps their cup.
I just hope we're not the next Anaheim Ducks. That was a team loaded with good young forward talent mixed with vets and a great defense like ours (and even a goalie like Gibson which we don't have), and somehow the bottom still dropped out on them eventually which was hastened by an expansion draft that they screwed up. They literally went from winning their division 5 years in a row and long playoff runs to what they are now. Nothing is given for the Canes the next few years despite how promising they are right now.

There are a lot of teams I don’t want to be... the Caps, Ducks, Sharks, Canucks. Thankfully we’re not. I think we have a good thing here. It’s not always going to be pretty but I like our direction.

For sure we've set a solid foundation and are trending in the right direction. But all it takes is one or two missteps to derail that. We're going to need to absolutely nail the expansion draft and next 2-3 offseasons to prevent that.

Growing pains folks. Embrace it. Savor it. It will be pay off.

Problem is their window is now. 3-4 year bridges for Svechnikov, Necas and Nedeljkovic mean those guys plus Aho, Teravainen, Pesce and Slavin will all need new contracts in 2024 or 25. Including this playoff run that's 4 playoff runs with this core before you either have to make hard choices or hope a bunch of people take friendly deals for the sake of depth.

I *think* we are headed in the right direction. I'm intrigued by our prospect situation and we have something to build on/around.

However, I fear if we don't either win a Cup or at least make the Finals in the next 2-3 years, something "stupid" will happen. Like the front office will panic and blow things up or the players stop listening to RBA. And, while I'm not "worried" about it right now, Aho and TT will be UFAs before we know it. And, we assume Svech will bounce back, he has too right?

I say think, because if things were guaranteed, the Panthers would have won Super Bowl 50. We all know how that went and what happened afterwards (1 winning season since w/ a Wild-Card playoff loss), and their downfall wasn't pretty and they are still digging out of that hole. I'd hate to see what we've built go up in smoke.

So I'll conclude this by saying, lets just win 3 straight and forget this whole conversation and collapse ever happened.

Yep it's going to get squirrelly in the next few years. Going to be tough to keep this core together beyond that. I think taking the next step (i.e. another conference finals or Cup appearance) might convince a few of those guys to take sweetheart hometown deals (again in Pesce and Slavin's case) but if we keep spinning our wheels I'm not sure what will happen. That's why these next two seasons are key.

The sucky thing is that Tampa's PP is likely to regress, perhaps pretty severely, in a future round. Of the teams that won 8 or more games over the past 40 years, just one has crossed 35% threshold (80-81 Islanders). The 18-19 Bruins are the only other team to get over 30% (Link).

4 year bridges for any of those put them in UFA. 3 year or nothing.

As a devils fan I’m straight up enraged at how they have been allowed to go so far over the cap when the league took issue with a contract structuring of Kovalchuks contract and dinged us for it, when what the lightning did has been way more egregious

To interject here, Stamkos played this year and was never on the LTIR so not sure why he was lumped into this.

Also, we are the only team in this league that has fudged with the Cap rules legally but maybe not intended. Leaf's do it far more than we have. People just are pissed that we are doing it and having the success that this team is.

Everything that was done was legal and within the Rules. :dunno:

It's not easy to win the Cup in the league, sadly.

Tampa finally took the price in 2020... they draft Stamkos in 2008 and Hedman in 2009.

Bruins still doesn't have it with Marchand/Bergeron/Pastrnak. They win it back in the team against Canucks in 2011 but Marchand was support player, not superstar.

Ten years in a row Craps was juggernaut though they didn't win in until 2018.

Blues were big contender since 2012... they won in in 2019.

Flyers have a good squad with a lot of great players, they can't win it.

You can look even at Avs: this is 8th season into McKinnon's career. Still no Stanley (so far, maybe finally they will take it).

There's no such a thing as "Canes must win it in next three years". We have good core but so does a lot of teams.

Teams have to learn how to win, and you do that from learning from your mistakes. Lots of lessons in here for these guys. This core still has some time, though this summer may slow the roll a bit depending how it goes.

Yeah, I'm just enjoying this ride even though it was painful tonight the last 5 minutes of 2nd period.

We should just get better and I believe we will.

Stamkos was placed on LTIR in April and re-activated once playoffs started.
