I don't know why people are so surprised. This is a guy who's only a few years removed from being considered one of the top prospects in football. A few bad years playing on an extremely bad team doesn't mean the guy can't play.

Yeah, can you think of ANY highly touted QB prospects who just completely flamed out?

Oh right, I forgot the George Seifert Era.

To be fair, so did everyone else.
You don't remember Chris Weinke?! Or rookie Steve Smith? Or the #1 draft pick he "led" us to, allowing us to draft Julius Peppers?

Well I barely do either as those are some of my first Panthers fan memories after Kerry Collins, Wesley Walls, and Tim Biakabutuka.

Being drafted 3rd overall literally means nothing especially since Darnold had a lot of critics before being drafted. Yes he looked pretty good this weekend but he still has so much to prove.

Fun fact, that 2001 team (George Seiferts last season) saw Steve Smith score a kickoff return for a TD on the very first play of the very first game. The Panthers beat the Vikings in Minnesota, never to win another game until next season. Then the Charlotte Hornets left for New Orleans. And some NHL team in Raleigh or something went to the Finals.

If we want to talk about bad QB prospects, Tim Couch was lousy. I know it was the re-birth of the expansion Browns so probably not fair to judge him that way but I was never that impressed. He ended up losing his starting job to a guy named Kelly. If you lose to a guy named Kelly, ouch man.

He is a star.

Talk about living the dream! Literally have like 1/10 the business of Chick Fil A and the employees are twice as slow at best. Dude is probably rolling in the money. And I'm sure nice guy, family man Jerry Richardson gave him a discount on the franchise fees.

MAN I wanted that guy to be a star so bad. Mid 90s Sportscenter would’ve feasted on it.
He was a star to me dammit! Was I only 11 years old before his best season? Maybe but he's still a Panthers GOAT.

The NFL wasn't such a media juggernaut back in the day because I remember for the longest time it took me months just to find a clip of this.

I mean, The Bo is having a tough go right now, but at its peak a few years ago, our local Bojangles was the best and fastest fast food restaurant around.

"young quarterback Chris Weinke"
my favorite heckling story...

back in the fall of 2000, chuck amato was in his first year as nc state head coach and his previous employer came to town quarterbacked by chris weinke. and fsu did thoroughly thrash nc state by many, many points. my season tickets that year were on the east side, lower level, near the visitor's entrance/exit to/from the old a.e. finley fieldhouse.

after that thrashing, weinke was one of the last guys off the field. as he made his way in leisurely fashion, this one drunk dude was screaming bloody murder at him. "weinKAY!! weinKAY!! YOU'RE OLD! YOU'RE F'N OLD!!! YOU... YOU... YOUVOTEDFORNIXON!"

for some reason (probably because it was funny) i absolutely lost my shit laughing. i'm pretty sure i caught weinke laughing at it, too.

Remember when FSU was a juggernaut? Pepperidge Farm has a vague sense that this used to be a thing.

I was there the first time UNC beat FSU after they joined the ACC. It was hilarious because once they stormed the field, they tried to take the goal posts down and couldn't. So you just had throngs of people hanging off it and I remember saying that if UNC's defense was as stingy as this goalpost they would have beaten FSU a long time ago.
