The wrinkle…I believe the last year’s SB is deferred. Not sure how deferred $$$ would fly with Rantanen, but the Canes have changed the way in which their contracts are structured.

Thanks for that, hadn’t seen that deal. He has history with that team and didn’t try and squeeze them too hard so makes sense to weight it that way. Didn’t realize Dundon was doing deals like that.

I think Carolina messed this up in a big way. he needs to be traded by TDL if he rejects Tulsky's extension, doesnt matter how amazing you draft, cannot have nothing to show for assets expended for both Guentzel and Rantanen in consecutive years.

-Miller at the same time was going through personal hurdles, which caused him to miss a Month. It was also decided by Miller and Management that he needed a fresh start somewhere. Again, nothing to do with Pettersson, but media wont get click bait because they had nothing to report as it didnt come out why Miller needed a personal leave. so the media made it into some sorta of locker room feud.
-Management was open to trading both Miller and Pettersson which confirms that changes are being made but not as if the Canucks had to choose 1 or the other.
The core was stale.
- Miller sold for pennies? lol 1st round pick, 25 yr old Centre ( former 1st round pick), valuable prospect. What exactly were you expecting to get from a 32 yr old player signed until he is 37 yrs old with a no movement clause.


As long as a player is willing to play in Canada and thrive on the pressure of the market then Vancouver will always be a top option for free agents.

They will be big game hunting between now and July 1 and have lots of cap space to be able to do so.

Rantannen will be one of their priorities imo if he hits Free Agency.

They were so willing to make this happen they took absolutely bottom of the barrel value mid-season to do it. Sure, makes total sense! Again, happens all the time to successful teams! I can see why Rantanen would be drawn to their healthy culture.

Why such a definitive take when the deadline is two weeks after the tournament is done? Not just you of course, but strange the sentiment has so strongly cemented as “Rantanen definitively struggling in Carolina, they f***ed this up and he’s gotta be moved for this to be a salvageable situation.”

He’s looked great to anyone who has watched the games, not just people boxscore watching or certain Avs fans who are desperate for him to be the worst version of the post Avs version of himself he could possibly be.

Tulsky and the player himself both said they needed some time to let things settle and then they’d get into it. Let’s at least give it a week after the tournament to start calling time of death on this trade.

JT Miller had a great career year when he scored 100+ points. but as someone that watched every single game has has played for the Canucks, I can honestly tell you that he is not a 100 point player.

I'm sure he will still have a couple of productive seasons with NYR but with the Canucks, his productive years would just be wasted as we are not cup contenders this year. I'd rather not gamble and see what kind of production JT will be performing under when he is 34,,35,36,37 yrs old ( The years Quinn Hughes hits his prime)

This year, he was playing at a 70 point pace for the Canucks. Since the trade, small sample size but he is playing at a 65 point pace for the Rangers.

No movement clause really takes away any leverage as it prevents a bidding war. I'm very satisfied with Chytil, 1st that turned into Marcus Pettersson and Drew Oconnor + a prospect in Mancini.

Yes the Canucks decided that a fresh start was needed as did JT. These arent 10 yr old boys at Recess. They are professional atheltes that have been together for 6 season (Pettersson, Miller) They didnt decide all of a sudden this year that they cant be around eachother.

IT was just time for Miller to go. Kinda reminds me of Blake Wheeler.

Personally, I would have waited until off-season to trade Miller but i think the Canucks wanted to get ahead of it and get Marcus Pettersson asap and open up cap space for the TDL. They are up to something big and didnt want to wait till summer.

I doubt many teams could have squeezed more out of Rantanen than Colorado. It was the perfect setup for him. Trading/signing players like that and expecting similar results is risky business, chances are they will just do worse.

I get why they did it, just wish they had an extension worked out prior or better yet, I wish they had traded the same package+ likely a little bit more for Pettersson. Another high-end C would have been the better add than an elite winger IMO, also no contract risk.

Assuming that last year wasn't the fluke year for Pettersson. Rantanen has the history of high performance (with Mac of course) so that could be why they felt like taking the risk was better with him.

If they're prepared, what are they waiting for? Make the offer or trade him. Shit or get off the pot.

At this point presumably they're waiting till after the 4 Nations. Prior I'd guess they wanted to give him some time to settle rather than thrust a contract negotiation at him right away.

I believe the guy has enough of a track record regular season/playoffs/international that justifies whatever hes going to make. The messing up part is IF the extension is rejected AND he is not recouped.

Definitively, the situation that Tulsky's is currently in is not favorable though, the ball is not in his court. Either he has to push all his chips in this year to make sure they are stacked to win it all, or since there is no other free agent winger of Rantanen's ilk to sign from free agency this year, there will be a giant hole in the lineup.

I agree with your point to a degree, but it’s important to note that Necas was always going to get traded, the deal he signed was structured to be easily tradeable and he was never re-signing in Carolina. Getting a playoff run with a guy like Rantanen as well as the ability to full court press him on an extension is a decent return given that context. If they swing and miss on Rantanen as well as not getting a chance at Marner or even Ehlers there will for sure be a deflated morale even if the assets lost aren’t world ending.
