Friedman: Carolina likely to offer an 8 year, $100+ M contract to Rantanen before the deadline

It's too bad Rantanen is a UFA this summer. Would like to see what Rantanen could do in a full season in Carolina. I doubt he puts up 100+ pts in Carolina with no MacKinnon and no Makar.
Rantanen doesn’t seem to fit Carolina’s current style. Not saying he can’t adjust with time, but he just seems like the odd man out now

...didn't he supposedly turn down close to that money already with the Avs, hence the reason they traded him??... :dunno:

Avs offer was 8 x $11.75 mil, Rant's agent ask was around $14 mil. After Rants was traded he went on record saying he would've taken less than Mack ($12.6 mil) to stay in Colorado.

I think it was Chris Johnston that said Colorado had a number in mind as far as Rantanen’s value, taking age and everything into account. They didn’t believe they could get him at that number so they moved on.

...probably not; totally different style of play...

Seems just like Huberdeau going from Florida to Calgary and he had to greatly change his game over the past 3 seasons. Rantanen is wasted talent on Carolina.

...wow, totally different players...Hubs was a pass-first set up man with exactly WHO to set up in Calgary??...Kadri, career 2nd Liner??...Rantanen does need to change his game, but he has all the tools to do it...

I think Rantanen is going to feel too emotional/disturbed by the Colorado negotiations/trade to be rushed into signing with Carolina.

Feels like Hurricanes need to approach this with a soft touch to get it done—and instead there has already been too much brinkmanship through the media.

In the last couple days we’ve now seen leaked what they are offering or heard that they may yet flip him if he doesn’t sign.

Feels like they are trying to nudge him with a sledgehammer.
You're kidding right?

"Hey rants, I know you miss your buddies over there but uhhh... *softly caresses Rantanen 's back* maybe 13mil over 8 years might cheer ya up.. eh buddy? There's my boy!"

These are men, and this is a fkn physical contact sport. Why do these men need to be approached softly? With millions of dollars?

Am I the crazy one?

My guess is the Canes want to keep the aav around $12-12.5M, with the total contract value coming in over $100M with some deferred $$$. I doubt that flies with Rantanen, so they may have to go up to around $13M if they really want him to stick around.

I’d think $13M x 8 ought to be enough, but we’ll see if the Canes even get there and if Rantanen is willing to spend the next 8yrs in Raleigh. He hasn’t looked bad in the games he’s played, has generated plenty of chances. The Canes just went through a hellacious few games where no one could score.

CAR will have close to $40M to spend this summer with no high priority RFAs to sign, most of their core locked up and a few roster spots ready to be fillled by high end prospects on ELCs. Might as well give Rantanen what he wants based on what they gave up

It's also possible he'll retire to start his own ostrich farm, but I don't think either of these outcomes are very likely.

If they give him this contract, Brind'Amour will be fired in a season because he doesn't fit his system. They really need a pucking moving defenseman to replace and aging Burns. Rantanan will be a 65 point player in Carolina making $12-13 million a year.

Imagine you get blindsided by a trade, and now the team that acquired you is negotiating via the media.

Two parties are less likely to get to an agreement when one of the then is upset by their circumstances. It feels to me that Carolina is doing nothing to settle things down.

The difference between $100m and $110m may become less important when a player feels like they’ve lost control of where they want to play.

Carolina should be rolling out the red carpet to show him his future in NC and making the case that this is where he and his family would be most happy and successful.

Instead they seem to be engaging in the same tactics that ultimately led to Colorado trading him in the first place.

Where are you getting the team is negotiating through the media? Rumor guys post rumors. This isn’t the team driving this.

Kypreos said it's possible Rantanen goes back to Colorado this summer.

Kypreos says a lot of stuff that never comes remotely close to happening and quite often stuff that doesnmt make any sense. Not surprising coming from him tbh.

That said, if I’m Carolina there’s no way I’m giving him 14M a year. It was a massive mistake to trade away Necas for Rantanen IMO. They had a great player who fit in perfectly with their group and had a much more pallatable AAV for next season and very likely for his next contract as well. Now they need to try to make a contract work with a guy that you don’t even know if he wants to play there and that’s heartbroken he got dealt.

I would bet money that if Carolina can’t sign him, someone trades for his rights to get him that 8th year before July 1st. Otherwise he is either doing a one year deal or will want close to 15 on a 7 year deal.

Who in free agency would they sign though, Pionk?

...they still have Ghost...what's better out in UFA-land??... :dunno:

Carolina has one of the best D prospects in the world, Nikishin, coming over in a few months. He will be cost effective (at least one ELC year) right at the same time Rantanen would be at his cap % peak.
