Lost way too many puck battles tonight as well. Not sure at what point they decided it wasn't important to fight for the puck, but it's not going to help you win games

I was literally thinking "I really hate the shootout, but it would probably suck more watching the canes lose right before OT ends" right when the flames carried the punk into the zone before the goal.

Sometimes it feels like we are a little too focused on line changes when we have an opportunity to end the game.

Like when Murphy came on when the puck could've been sustained in the o-zone? I agree.

But yeah like others have said we really just need to shoot more.

Yeah that's the play that keyed my observation. If you want a line change that damn badly just throw it in the netting or into the goalie's chest. Heck we don't seem to have a problem doing either.

This loss has to tighten the noose a bit for Muller, right? 0-for-3 on the road trip and consecutive losses to the Alberta teams. That leaves us virtually no margin for error in the upcoming games. We either hit a hot streak or we're looking at an extreme uphill battle for the playoffs again.

Whether he still has Rutherford's confidence or not, surely at this point the idea of a coaching change is being entertained behind closed doors.

Whatever happens, I just hope it isn't too little, too late. Four teams are right on our butt in the division. Any one of them gets it together before we do, we're on the outside and probably not getting back in.

Are we betting those teams getting it together? It has been 30+ games

I don't think the Canes are good enough to run away with a playoff spot but they would have to have a total collaspe to be out of it imo.

It's a special kind of optimism to be worrying it's 'too late' because you're only a little ways in the playoffs.

Yeah, technically it's not over till it's over...

But usually when it's over, you can tell long before it becomes official

Just based on the strength of schedule, January will be the make or break month. It's the easiest (on paper) by far. If we haven't gotten some distance from the rest of the Metro by the end of that month, it's probably a good time to call it

God's country
welp, Murphy's entertaining as hell. that kid's going to be a good one. really fun to watch.

hope Lindholm is o.k.. one of these days someone's going to pound him though. serious injury just waiting to happen sadly.

ugly, ugly hockey overall. there's nothing to suggest that's going to change.

Every single chance the Hurricanes have had to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the pack, they've blown it. We've all seen this team do it before, and I'm not convinced this season will be any different.

That's because they are a marginally talented team, without much depth and relying on below average goaltending. It's not a surprise that they aren't putting distance between themselves and the rest of the pack, because they aren't materially better than the rest of the pack.

Not to make excuses, but I think we are underestimating the impact of their schedule recently. They've had to play 6 games in 9 days with a ton of travel in between.

Washington-->Nashville-->Carolina-->Vancouver-->Edmonton-->Calgary. That takes a toll.

Probably the weakest team in that stretch (Edmonton) had 3 days off before having to face the Canes on the backend of a back to back. And Calgary isn't as weak a some like to imply. Their record is very similar to Carolina's (2 games less played) but they are something like 7-4 when Giordano is in the line-up.

It's the usual "the season's already over" comments after every loss. I agree though. At the beginning of the season if you told me by mid December they'd be sitting 8th in the conference I would have said gtfo! I just didn't believe with the division shifts that the Hurricanes would fair well this season given the poopy end to 2012-2013.

I had a bit of a feeling things would be rather wide open this year, but still, 8th in the East and 3rd in the Metro? I'm calling shenanigans, especially since NOBODY in this division seems to be capable of just rolling off wins on wins on wins on wins aside from Pittsburgh. If anything I expected the Metro to be the better of the two divisions since I didn't see Tampa being this good, and figured 2011-12 was closer to where Montreal actually was then 2012-13. But the Metro... what the **** is this ****? Half of the division is nowhere near what I expected them to be this season, only ones that ARE who I thought they were are Pittsburgh, Columbus, New Jersey, and us. **** it, if we make it I don't care if we have to Panther our way in losing 20 ****ing games in OT in the process, as long as we make it.
