Similarly, Michkov and Smith aren't in the same ballpark.

I’d pick Michkov.

But listening to Hughes in his press conference it was pretty clear he would pick one of the other three if they fall.

He said just because of position, Michkov would lose if they felt there was equal talent.

And it’s no surprise that all other three players are centers, so i doubt he would pick Michkov if any of them are there.

The question though, does that extend to Reinbacher and perhaps Dvorsky ?

He didn't say because of position. He said, like when two players of equal talent play different position, the player not of position of need loses the tie breaker. Analagously, Michkov would lose the tie breaker due to the Russian factor. But Hughes said he still hasn't fully assessed the Russian factor, and he still hasn't ordered the players by talent/effectiveness level...

So I await future press conferences before I try to read which players he prefers...

They are apparently...

Yeah it depends who you ask...

Would be great if they are because it looks like we're getting one of them and we don't get to choose which one...

The more I look at video and read analysis the more confused I am about why there’s any doubt about Michkov. Stick the Russian factor up your asses, if he’s available at 5 you take him and thank Orthodox Jesus.

I would also inquire what the cost is to trade up. It wouldn’t be much, considering the top4+Smith are all rather attractive prospects. Michkov is a special talent though.

People talk openly about the Russian factor, but I suspect size is also a reason. He's listed at 5'10, but may be 5'9.

It would be Smith.. and he'd be the most talented prospect we've drafted in a long, long time from an offensive stand point.

And carries none of the "risk" that is floating out there about Michkov.

The concern really is that Smith is gone and they won't take Michkov. Weighing all the factors right now, it would be inconceivable to take anyone but Michkov at 5 if the top 4 sans Michkov plays out as is, and there's no reason to believe it wouldn't unless Timmins went full Grant and took Dvorsky at 3.

This post just sucks. It's not even a funny meme anymore.

Isn't like the other way around, McHack bases his list off Timmins?

You're reading way too much into it. He repeated the exact same line he repeated last year. It doesn't mean he thinks Michkov is equal. It means that at equal talent he will pick a center over a winger.

Last year, he picked the winger, so you gotta think he didn't see equal talent, which rather tells me they'll pick Michkov over Smith, but maybe not over Carlsson or Fantilli. We really don't know. Also, just after that Hughes mentioned they will have to deep dive on every single one of them, which meant their full evaluation wasn't done, so his comment is a general rule.

If he is 5'9", how good he will be over 30 yrs old? If we look at Kariya, Koivu and Gallagher, we can compare their production at 26 and at 33. Bigger players like Kopitar still produce a good pts rate even at 34. How many teams goes far in PO with a majority of players who are 5'9"?

Asking for a friend — any correlation between hf Michkov tire pumpers and the Wright ones?

I’m a big fan of athleticism at hockey; it’s a simple game where the fastest, toughest and most agile skaters tend to dominate.

Hearing of Wright’s iq for a year and how some would disavow the habs if they skipped on him has really re-framed popular opinion for me on something so arbitrary.

edit - just read he’ll be at the draft

Personally I was never sold on Shane Wright. He will be good for Seattle. But, I never saw that "it" factor in his game. I saw a really good player, but not franchise changing.

If you want to compare Michkov as a prospect I would look at Jack Hughes & Tim Stutzle as prospects. I put both in that dynamic high skill category with electric creative potential. As prospects, I rate Michkov better than both by a good amount. Hughes and Stu win in speed and that's pretty much it. Michkov is better than both in every other category that matters. IQ, edges, strength/puck protection, stick skills, goal scoring(Untouchable).

Also all 3 kids as prospects had "it". That might sound wild as "it" is not able to be evaluated. But, when a player has that "it" you just kind of know. You feel the electricity when you watch them. You lean forward in your seat because there is potential magic will be made

The league is nowhere close to how it was during Koivu and Kariya's time and Gallagher is a wrecking ball that couldn't be more opposite to Michkov.

This may be the most heart-warming Emelin moment ever (how he checks to see if the kid is ok). The difference in ”man size” is wild

He’s learning against big dudes so there’s that…

Definitely a good learning lesson about cutting to the middle. Hopefully it makes him stronger and wiser...

But hopefully he just got the wind knocked out of him and didn't hurt his knee. He's and intriguing prospect.

1. Carlsson: Big centerman, highest floor out of the three, and higher ceiling than Smith, imo. Unlike Smith, no rumblings about possibly needing to play wing at the NHL level. Positional need puts him over Michkov. Normally I’m not a fan of drafting for need, or for the safest picks, but he’s so talented that it doesn’t matter. This isn’t a Kotkaniemi type situation. A no-brainer pick if he’s somehow available (because that would mean the other two are gone anyway). I don’t expect him to be there at 5, so this is all probably moot.

2. Michkov: Small, uber-talented winger who comes with lots of baggage (both on and off the ice). 3 years away, minimum, in the best case scenario. Carries all around risk both in terms of his ultimate NHL upside, and with things that aren’t necessarily in his control. Possibly the highest ceiling out of the three, but I have this feeling that his talent and potential might be a touch overblown due to him being known for a while, and limited viewings of him. I’d take him at 5 if he’s there though, easily. A swing for the fences type pick.

3. Smith: A slightly undersized, offensively gifted center (presumably). A finesse type player who, due to his less than ideal size, and the defensive and physical aspects of the game not being his forte, might be better suited to wing at the NHL level (that’s the chatter from some, anyway). He seems kind of similar to Logan Cooley from last year, imo. Carries some bust risk like most other prospects. I’m honestly a little bit sick of these “maybe a center, may not be” types being the only ones seemingly available to us. We need a true, natural centerman with size and skill, so due to the aforementioned doubts, other prospects like Reinbacher, Leonard, etc might start to look alluring if Smith is the only top prospect left at 5. Maybe the Habs consider trading down in this scenario, not sure. Personally, I wouldn’t pass up the skill and upside, and the possibility that Smith can shore up those other aspects of his game to become a legit center in the NHL, and I’d pick Smith at 5 if he’s the only one of the top prospects left. Keep it simple.

I think Carlsson will end up a center at the NHL level but other than this week at the world championship he hasn’t played center in about 2 years.

You don’t turn down selecting a generational player like Michkov! If HuGo suspect a team ahead of the Habs strongly indicating they’ll grab him, trade up!

If we don’t end up with one of these 3 players it will be a waste of a terrible season.

We finally have the chance to grab an elite forward in a strong draft, they better not mess this up.
18 months ago, Shane Wright was supposed to be the elite forward.

Time will tell us a lot of things.

That’s pretty normal; he’s underage and plays in a professional men’s league. His frame and playing style project as a center at the NHL level, and this tournament reinforces that. If I’m looking for an NHL center, I take him over Smith easily.

Probably. I don’t really believes the rumours of colombus passing on Carlsson for Smith.

I don’t either. It’s going to be Michkov or Smith at 5, and I’d bet Smith if I had to make a prediction. Nothing wrong with that, Smith is a fantastic prospect. He’d have the highest apparent upside of anyone left at 5, and the rest of them carry just as much, if not more bust risk. I’d be livid if they passed on him for someone like Leonard, Reinbacher, or Dvorsky. Those prospects are a clear tier below.

I might consider choosing Michkov over Smith, if faced with a choice between the two (basically an impossible scenario in this draft at 5th), but I wouldn’t give up assets to move up for Michkov; I’d just take Smith. Just let the chips fall and take whichever one is left at 5, no need to complicate things for players we can never be sure about right now anyway.

I'd be over the moon if Hughes traded up to grab Michkov. I only know so much about the prospects, so him moving up to get him would mean he and the scouting stafff see a lot in him.

But, can we convince Columbus to pass on their prefered center for the other center when it comes to Will Smith and Carlsson? I'd think we could with a package including the Flrorida 1st plus some of the following pieces that address their needs: Owen Beck, Harris, even Matheson, Engstrom, Mesar.

Can Grier be convinced to go Smith over Michkov with any package?
