CBJ takes a C (Carlsson/Smith)
Sharks aren't doing a full rebuild so doubt they wanna wait for Michy...They'll take the other C.
Habs will take Leonard/Dvorsky

Sharks GM said Michkov’s contract doesn’t bother him. They can wait 3 years.

The sharks are possibly the second biggest full rebuild team in the league after Chicago. They have literally nothing after 33 year old Karlsson. Couture and Hertl are basically Patrik Elias after the rest of the devils core retired.

Columbus want a real center. Carlsson is a C/RW. Smith is the most "real center" there is, and apparently CBJ are high on him.

I really think the draft will go 1 of 2 ways.

Bedard, Fantilli, Smith, Michkov, Carlsson
or
Bedard, Michkov, Fantilli, Carlsson, Smith

I don't think we're getting Michkov, sadly. But I would be super happy with Carlsson.

Playing games to entice another team to take him

That’s 3 top players! Hawks didn’t even keep the water boy. But hey I hope they take him personally.

Carlsson falling to us would AMAZEBALLS

Teams take their guys and don’t give a shit about consensus rankings. We’ve done it multiple times, look at last year when Wright fell to 4th in the real draft.

Could well see Smith go 3rd if he’s the top guy for them.

These tournament comparisons always make me laugh.

Last year:
Armia had 5 goals/8 points in 10 games vs Hertl had 1 goal/5 points in 10 games
Farrell had 2 goals/6 points in 10 games vs Mercer had 0 goal/5 points in 10 games

It's good to see the players skill on display but in the grand scheme doesn't mean much for NHL.

Been watching them.

What's your appreciation of Michkov ?

he reminds me a lot of Caufield but better playmaker.

I think people look at the contract and him coming over but imo if the Habs pass on him I would think it's more about just what's going on with Russia in general. I'm guessing the Habs are looking at it as if we pick him is that saying we are ok with what Russia is doing, and that could be why they pass on him if they do.

I don't think their worry would that it would be an endorsement of Russia; there are Russians in the league right now who have publicly endorsed and campaigned for Putin and people haven't cared since the initial questioning right after the invasion. People are mostly understanding that it's hard to punish an individual for the actions of their leader, especially a young kid like Michkov.

I think they'd be more worried about the conflict in general and where the World will be in 3 years. Will Russians be able to leave the country in 3 years? Will they pull dirty tricks and draft Matvei into the army to keep him around? Will Russia be persona non grata to the rest of the World? Will they engage NATO in some way and make the conflict even bigger? All of this geopolitical unknown is very real and makes the prospect of taking him at 5 a super high risk.

Make no mistake, if he never comes over it would be a total disaster. He could be the next Wayne Gretzky/Connor McDavid hybrid, but if he never dons the CH then it doesn't matter at all.

I mean, we can take Dvorsky and he could end up next Galchenyuk or worse. I get your point, but feel like unless you have a shot at Bedard/Fantilli/Carlsson dont think there's a safe bet. Feel the odds of Michkov coming over is safer than Dvorsky/Benson becoming better players.

Don't get me wrong, I want Michkov if he's still there at 5. I'm not advocating for not choosing him and trying to play it safe. I'm just trying to reiterate the the risk and uncertainty in that part of the world is a very real one whether we want to acknowledge it or not.

It's easy for diehard fan on HFBoards, Saundies, to sit here and say "Hell yeah I would pick Michkov no matter what. Who cares?" But I don't make my living calling the shots on a billion dollar sports team. The powers at be can and will balk if they feel the risk is too great.

fair points, I don't think too many in the NHL are worried about him coming over, when perhaps as re-signing with SKA would not be fun for whatever team drafts him.

It's going to be very interesting to see where he goes, I'd be a bit surprised if it's before 4th, and I think the Jackets take Smith but of course we'll see. SJ is very interesting here, but if they take Carlsson and then the Habs are in a tough spot, I would take the risk unless they say get a really good offer from say the Caps or whoever to trade down. If they can say get Wood and Moore (trade up with the panthers pick) I could live with it plus whatever else they can get.

Nobody with a brain will blame HuGo if Michkov cant come over here in 3 years because the war got worst hes dream is to play in the NHL he already said he would honnor hes contract but at 21 he will be coming here alot better and more mature on an ELC hes the BPA and its not even close

It is possible that HuGo or Molson want nothing to do with him that i guess will never know but if they are interested they have a big advantage on that situation with Bobrov's connections with SKA

If I'm an owner or a GM I'll abide by what the league has determined. It's one thing to ban a nation from participating under a country flag and something all together different to discriminate against an individual because of what the tyrant running his country is doing. If the NHL is good with it there is no reason to not take a player who could be a game changer in our rebuild. The group we have in place can easily put a positive spin on it. After all they did manage to get a couple of anglophones running the show without the roof caving in. :sarcasm:

Can the Habs just bribe SKA if they land Michkov? BTW I voted Michkov, Carlsson; and then 2pac's best friend's husband!
Does anyone know if we can compensate his current organization to release him from his contract?

That is not remotely true. Cartsson is a prototypical center with the size, vision and 200 foot game. Smith is pure offence and cheats like a winger in the Dzone.

If Carlsson was American and on the USNTDP he would be their #1 center and conversely, if Smith was in the SHL he likely is a full time winger on the bottom line.

Making anything close to linear comparisons between the USNTDP, CHL, NCAA and top European pro leagues is an analogy fraught with flaws and miscalculations and should be avoided.

The return for trading down needs to be sizeable otherwise stay the course and take Michkov if that’s who falls to the 5th drafting slot.

Michkov is huge gamble. Current state of fascist Russia is absolute mess. Bloke could be anywhere in upcoming year. Cannon fodder in trench, stucked for good in SKA or NHL. I dont cry if we pass him…

seems like a lot of games around Michkov, I was wrong about him earlier in the year, he's the second best offensive prospect in this draft and people should be canned for not drafting him, he's worth the risk. He's special.

GM's are totally playing head games lol
