[Carlo Colaiacovo] I hope this is a wake up call for change in the NHL. Fans are losing interest. No rivalries; lacking storylines; more buzz around t

So he's calling out who? No one. He's calling out hockey in general and giving no ideas or possible solutions.
Grow a sac CC. Call out Bettman, call out the owners.
Hey, here's A thought, call out your fellow players: stop being jock, meat head, bullies. Stop using your athlete status to prey on women. Stop looking the other way when your teammate is sexually assaulted, stop with the code of silence to cover up dirt bag predators who share the locker room with you. I mean, that sort of shit turns me away from the league much more than anything he mentioned.
But I suppose, in the mind of a hockey player, the real enemy will always be math.

I don't disagree. Lack of rivalries and a stagnant cap that has frozen the trade market is a problem.

Goal scoring has gone through the roof and imo hockey is not actually in a better state. I didn't really want goal scoring to go up across the board massively, I just wanted the stars to be able to do great things according to the rules. 1/4 of the forwards being a ppg isn't what I was picturing.

Also the edge is really, really lacking. For every intense, heated game there are 20 corporate/social pandering nights. It's always been about the money but it's never been this in your face that it's about the money.

It isn't all bad, the fact that comebacks are very possible is fun - but there's definitely a lack of intrigue. I also think there's too many teams and there should not have been an increase from 30, but whatever.

Maybe it’s because my Canucks are irrelevant now but I definitely feel like the rivalries/hate has died down.

I think outside of a couple of playoff series, the last 2-3 years of the playoffs have been less heated than they were even 7-8 years ago. Obviously the players still go at it with everything they’ve got but there’s less physicality and animosity in a playoff series.

The play style has changed along with the way the games are officiated.

Also the league’s popularity will always be capped with how localized it is. Talk to most fans at a game and they can tell you plenty about their own team but outside if the big obvious veteran names, most of them don’t know shit about the opponent, especially if it’s from the opposite conference.

The NFL and even the NBA are much more likely to bring in viewership from neutral fans if the matchup is interesting enough.

I don't care about rivalries, I care about the product. I want to pay a fair price to have reliable access to every DRW game. No blackouts. That's it, that's my whole wishlist. I don't care about non-DRW games, or features. I don't care if you show me ads. I don't even care if I have to watch live-only. It's insane to me that the NHL refuses to offer me this incredibly basic and fundamental product.

Until they figure that shit out my "viewership" is going to be down.

This is a huge reason why right here. The fact I’m able to watch every NHL team but my hometown team is insane.
I pay for cable and am incensed that ESPN (who has pocketed 5-10 bucks a month from our grandparents and parents for the last 40 years - read your cable bill), has decided to put some games on a streaming only platform espn+ In order to watch every NYR game cable is no longer enough. It's only a handful of gamed but it's F'd up

People no longer have cable. It is impossible to watch in market teams without cable.

Viewership is down.

I wonder why?
Sign up for sportsnet now... The following year, you actually are gonna need sportsnet now plus. It's the most expensive sport to play and the hardest to find a way to legally watch at times. They have put advertising and scoring above all else. The penalties called for hooking or slashing on an opponents stick are beyond soft, the puck over the glass and goalie trapezoid have not worked as expected and 3 on 3 is a game of keep away.

Having said that I still enjoy watching when my team plays but often I will end up watching basketball or football if there is a big game on.

At the end of the day the total spent on salaries will not change. All you are doing is moving around who spends it.

Owners are not dropping down from 50% HRR. So if some teams spend $100 mill plus then others need to be much lower.

Players have been complaining when escrow pushed double digits in percentage. Nhl isn’t going to leave the cap at $82.5 mill and then teams go and spend another $15-$20 on top of that. Escrow would get way too large for the players.

You’d see a drop in the cap ceiling down to closer to $70 mill and for those who opt to pay above that will be another 50% or whatever they opt to spend into a tax.

Nhl would have to rework how things operate but imo so long as the owners get their 50% they should be fine though I’m sure some of the smaller market owners or less wealthy would prefer that they all be able to spend the same amount. But if 3/4 agree to a luxury tax then it can pass.
Why would this be the case? There are endless ways you can set up a luxury tax but this is how the nba's works. The money spent above the cap by the team is then redistributed between the teams that did not exceed the limit. So in that situation certain owners would take in more money due to the increase spending of others.

All you're doin is injecting more money (revenue) into the league that would then in turn be distributed between players(in terms of contracts/spending)/owners.

Its going to increase overall revenue from owners spending more, I don't follow how this could be a negative for the players.

"as a fan of a team that would massively benefit from the cap being removed....remove the cap,"
Don't think we should remove the cap. We should just move to something like the NBA uses. There is a cap but there is flexibility to make things work on your team. A soft cap allows for more freedom.

He's not wrong but it's much easier to complain about things than it is to offer solutions.

Yes, we need better rivalries but what do you propose to do to make them better?
Yes, the NHL needs more trades but how?
etc.

And too many math equations?!? Ahh...
Get rid of the instigator. Bring back enforcers. The game needs more characters not a bunch of boring 4th liners who don't hit fight or score. Just dump the puck and try not to get scored on. More divisional play. Only play other conference once a year.

Sportsnet now doesn't work if you live in the market of the team you're trying to watch. They black it out because they want you to pay for cable. The opposite is true if you live out of market. There, they black out games on cable, forcing you to stream instead. It's all super convoluted and f***ed up. It's like they want to scare fans away.

They are actively preventing people from watching games, then wonder why people don't watch the games. It's beyond stupid.

- any time a team has quality star players the conversation always turns to how they will keep them and manage the cap. Sometimes quality players are traded for nothing for cap reasons

Can I just point out that not only does this happen in other sports, it's also much more common?

The Green Bay Packers were forced to trade one of the best wide receivers in the League last year because of the cap. Same for the current AFC champs Kansas City Chiefs. Meanwhile, star players are often traded/move teams in the NBA, for the simple reason that players have much more power and thus can force their way off of teams.

I'm just saying, your typical NHL roster is significantly more stable than a typical NFL or NBA roster.

It's mostly the edge that is lost. There's barely ever any chirping between the benches anymore, and that used to be a daily occurrence.

Playoffs still have some of that edge but it will never be what it used to be.

I also think the concept of tanking has become so shameless that it takes away from the game as well.

1. Ads
2. Money
3. Gambling
4. Social Justice (unfair)
5. Sexuality
6. Softer Era
7. Not able to speak openly about some of the above.

This is just a beginning of the list. Nobody wants these things. Some are not even aware they don't wanna it, and turn off from the sports without realizing why. Era has changed and Battman did not notice. Kids don't need to pay to watch, they can play esports and get paid, as much as those stars. Instead Battman went in a completely wrong direction after 2019. The worst part is, it's not allowed to talk about what is bothering fans. I see only down from here. Many teams will close down. Milking for money by introducing 10th jersey and making an ad mockery out of the ice ring will work short term, but it will completely fail long term. Need to go back to the roots. Someone with a brain will have to come in and restart hockey.
