Carl Hagelin

I'm almost as blown away by the lack of talk about Hags as I was with his play today. How do you not talk about the great performance?
 
Hags was the best player on the ice shared with Tavares, Nash, Gaborik, and Richards. Was a complete force, and is just like how zetterberg plays, Hags has potential to become way better. There isn't an athlete in the division that has the work ethic and will to get better than this guy.

Hagelin doesn't have the skill of Zetterberg.

However, he reminds me of a mismatch in football. You know the type of player you throw out there and no defense has any clue what to do with him. When he plays his game he's one of the most unique players in the NHL.
 
He's been phenomenal and he can do things other players just cannot. I'm really excited for him, i think he pans out to a 50-60 point a year type of guy.

I just don't think he has the type of skill to put up those type of points. Several seasons of over 80, 1 over 90. Look at all of Hags goals this year they were all hard working ugly goals. He would have had a nice goal if not for a penalty against Boston. He has a nice shot once in a while, but so does Asham.
 
Oh come on, the first 2 weeks of the season I was the only poster who didn't think it was heresy to have Hagelin in the top 6 over Kreider.
 
BTW, seeing Clarkson put up 30 and score 9 already this season makes me wonder about putting ceilings on players. Hags is such a hard worker maybe he exceeds all of our expectations. His shot's decent and he has decent passing skills. Add hard work to get better and on the ice. Who knows? Maybe he can score over 60 points.

I agree that he isn't Z II, different skill set if nothing else.

But I've kind of been waiting for this. Look back at the reports from Europe during the lockout, I think I posted that Hagelin was the one NHLer who impressed the most. He had some ridiculous nights. He isn't a better player than Kopitar, but he definitely was borderline insane in some games. He made plays with the puck at that speed he dominates on the forecheck in the NHL. I definitely think he can become a good top 2 line player in this league. Before we haven't seen the scoring, but if you get chances it comes sooner or later. Always does.
 
I really think Hags is breaking through a plateau and entering a new level.

He seems to thrive on confidence, so when he gets the ball rolling, we see the player he's been the past few games. Just like when him, Gabby and Richards went on that mini-tear last season.

On the flip side, when he starts to struggle it snowballs, and we get the Hags we saw in the playoffs. A pretty much non-entity.
 
I think that Hagelin is the benefiting a lot from playing on a line with Rick Nash.

I have always admired Hags work rate and his speed. I think this combination of hard work and speed can create a lot of scoring chances out of nothing.

I think Hags will eventually become a 20-30 goals per season guy.
 
I think Carl Hagelin's ridiculous flow has added to his aerodynamics on the ice... kind of like a spoiler :laugh: more speed.

Definitely think he's benefiting from playing with Nash but at the same time, Nash is benefiting from him too. Nash isn't exceptionally fast, so having a linemate that can win races for loose pucks and use his speed to get open allows Nash to make more plays. That's what line chemistry is.

I was with you. I left repeated statements this year and the last that I expect him to continue to improve. I am not sure how people thought that a rookie will get no better than he was last year and may even get worse. It's the same as the stupidly low expectations everyone had for McDonagh after his rookie year.
 
The way he's been playing is the reason why I and other posters said he was an absolute no-go in any trade for Nash...been real nice seeing them together now.

Points are points. They do have things in common, as many hockey players do, but Zetterberg is a very different player and has Hagelin beat on many levels. That doesn't mean that Hagelin necessarily will score less points than Z (although I very much doubt that Hagelin will become a consistent PPG player).
 
Hags is faster. And still developing. My brother coached him throughout his junior hockey career in Södertälje. Says he still has not peaked out.
But Zetterberg has the better all around hockey skills. My brother also coached Zetterbergs Swedish home club Timrå for 3 seasons.
Hags is an entirely different player than Zetterberg. Glad we got him, but he will never reach Zetterberg class. That crow I will eat readily if he does though
 
He's a terrific support player. There's no doubt he's benefited from playing with Nash. But his speed will always give Hagelin a role on a team. He can play on any line and be effective. His offensive game has been surprising.

I am more surprised by his apparent rise in hockey IQ from college. He was always a freak when it came to motor/speed but he really understand the game VERY well. The Rangers may have found their second Swedish gem.

I have high hopes for Fasth. His skating and puck control the last I saw him were at a VERY high level.

Let's all remember though, Hagelin is 23-24. They should be patient with Fasth, there is a reason he was a later round pick. Needs time to develop physically.
 
I saw something a little different from Hags last night. As always he was really on the puck, but on a couple occasions he stopped and made a move coming in on the half wall, made a grreat pass for a top quality chance for soemone in the slot.

Torts was saying how he creates so much with his legs, but doesnt necessarily make any passes. Hags could have had 3 assists last night, primary assists. He is really seeing the ice well and I think the experience factor from playing so many games last season is starting the click in. As fast as he is, he is learning to slow down the game by stopping at the right moment when hes carrying the puck, opening up holes for his teammates.

The kid is on fire now and is really making this team go to be honest. Really a catalyst for the offense, love watching this kid play.

Btw, dont want to hijack - but speaking of offense, Cally was really handling the puck well last night. Complete confidence with the puck and doing an unbelievable job of protecting it for a guy his size.
