Feel free to move this thread if something already exists, but curious to see everyone’s feelings regarding Carey and the likelihood he gets his jersey retired by the Canadiens organization.

I understand that the standard has always been Stanley Cups, but I think we need to realize this isn’t the 60s and 70s anymore. I don’t believe there has been any player on the Canadiens who has had a greater impact on the organization than Carey has in the past 30-40 years. Isn’t that what it’s all about? In my opinion, no other player will ever wear #31 for the Habs ever again.

He’s been my favorite player and always will be. I hope he is healthy and happy at home, and I for one hope he gets his day at the Bell Centre to have his jersey retired and we can give him a proper send off that he never received. It may very well be the longest and loudest ovation in Habs history, and that’s saying something.

I’m hopeful when his contract is over there is room for him to join our organization in a professional capacity and help build our team for the future.

I know he will but I think retiring a jersey of a player that hasn’t won any cup is a contrast to the other mystical « fantômes du forum » that are hanging in there .

This comes up all the time.

Yes, I think his jersey should be retired. Yes, I think it will happen. But it's far from a sure thing.

Personally I think jersey retirements should be about connection to the fans over a long enough period of time and not directly related to awards/cups or whatever. Though obviously awards/cup and the like goes a long way to building that fan connection so there will of course be a correlation.

No need to wait 30 years but there's also no rush so even though I do think Price deserves it, I would still probably wait another 10 years or so.

All it takes is for one goalie to win a cup and just like that Price’s whole career is forgoten.

Does not belong to be part of the club

He 100% deserves it and he 100% will.

It will happen not long after his first ballot hall of fame induction.

Using cups as a barometer is an antiquated dividing line. Its punishing a guy that his career was largely overlapped by, at minimum, the 2nd worst GM in franchise history.

Given that Gainey and Lapointe had their jerseys retired, ...

Beg your pardon ?

He has a better resume than about half of those who are retired. I think he’ll get his jersey in the rafters. It will take time but I think it’ll happen. He’s one of the best players to ever don the jersey. He was briefly the best player in the league.

I think they’ll make him wait longer but I agree he deserves it and I agree it will happen.

A shame about his injuries, he very likely has back to back Vezina/Harts if he’s healthy in 2016.

It's also like they didn't retire Koivu. They won't retire Subban or Weber. Markov won't get his retired. Price would be a jersey retirement, one jersey, retired for a 30 year period of the franchise.

Hardly overkill.

in 100 years....if humans still exist....we could have 20 more numbers to there. we need to start recirculating numbers. let's say...once three number have the same number honored it becomes retired.

The only thing I could see delaying or maybe stopping a jersey retirement for Price is if we win a cup or two in the next 5-10 years. If we win a cup in that time frame, I can see a player or two on that cup winning team getting priority over him. If our drought remains, I think he’ll eventually get up there. It’s ridiculous that he’s not a lock but this is Montreal so the standard are super high.

Yeah, Price is in a completely different class than those players too. He could/should be first ballot. At minimum a sure fire HOFer.

Truly elite player that won multiple playoff series on his own. He’s won every individual award there is and took a crap team to the finals. He did everything but win a cup and that’s certainly not his fault.
