Carey Price or Connor Hellebuyck

Price is one of the most overrated goalies ever

If he has the same career in Nashville, nobody would care about him

Same with Lundqvist
I don’t know about overrated. I feel like most people put him in the top 10 best goalies of the 21st century, probably outside the top 5 (Brodeur, Lundqvist, Vasilevskiy, Fleury, Bobrovsky, Luongo ahead), then it’s pretty close with the likes of Hellebuyck, Miller, Vokoun, Thomas, Rask, Rinne

For what it's worth - in the recently completed Top 60 Goaltenders of All-Time project in the History forum, they were ranked right after each other on the list. Price was 21st, Hellebuyck was 22nd.

This feels about right to me. They are very even. The tiebreaker in my mind is that Price had a couple of stretches where he really elevated to meet the moment. Hellebuyck has a lot of career left to have that moment, but we have to wait and see.

and that’s before this season so i guess if it was redone now that Hellebuyck gets his third vezina and is a lock for hart finalist, maybe even wins it. He probably edges him

I have some unfortunate news for you about Price, and in general about goaltenders for Canadian teams since 1992.
93.

Hellebuyck is close. Tremendous goalie.

The difference between Price and any goalie in the NHL now, or likely in the future is his ceiling/when he's on is above any current goalie when they're on.

Guy was ridiculous and took meh teams and all of a sudden they were a very good team in the league.

Price was unreal when he was on. Helle has proven to be a regular season all-star so far. If he chokes again this year, he may not bounce back.

In his last 7 seasons, Price was the most dominant goalie in the playoffs, while getting the lowest offensive support:

Their stats are close. You could say advantage to Hellebyuck.

Price was better in the playoffs, and had less support from his team. That's advantage Price.

But the eye test is advantage Price, all the way. The numbers just can't tell you who this player was. Carey Price was the Habs for a number of years. He would routinely be the best player on the ice for either team, even in games when MTL lost. They could have re-named the team the Montreal CareyPrice-iens.

It's close , Not mad if people want to put Helle ahead of price.

Price definitely wins the *but he did it on a dogshit team* argument though.

Helleybucks season might even surpass Price's MVP this year if he wins the MVP.... in a higher scoring environment as well

Numbers are similar but you've gotta take into consideration that scoring has increased significantly during Hellebuyck's prime compared to Price's.

The mid 2010s were scoring hell. There was a four season span where there were three total players with a 90 point season. As in three over that entire four years, not three per season.

Yeah Helleybuck being in MVP talks in this high scoring league when no other goalie is really close is pretty impressive
Sorry, I ninja edited this part. Which is crazy to consider:

"The mid 2010s were scoring hell. There was a four season span where there were three total players with a 90 point season. As in three over that entire four years, not three per season."

Yeah, but their defense was absolutely dogshit. Their top 6 consisted of four of the worst defensive forwards in the league, plus Ehlers and Wheeler, who were okay.
Yes I understand but both price and Helle have had dogshit D in front of them. The difference maker is goal support

...hasn't done shyte in the Playoffs yet...that's what's holding him back...
Yup and price notoriously had good playoff numbers.

International, playoffs - anytime the game was on the line he was absolute money. That should count for something - Helle still has to prove himself there

There's no question that Price was a much better goaltender than Hellebuyck.

Hellebuyck is very good, but Price is one of the very best ever. Sublime talent.

Are there seriously people here who would take Hellebuyck over Price in the playoffs, a tournament or in a winner takes all game.

Call me when Hellebuyck can get out of the first round, until then this isn't even a debate (yes I know Helle's first playoff run got to the 3rd round, good job).
