I love Versteeg. Hope he stays tbh.

small sample size aside, I have loved his game thus far.

For me it's impossible to say right now one way or the other. Other than his first game, in which he (and the whole team) was underwhelming, none of the games he's played in have been televised or available via stream so it's hard for me to assess his game.

What have you loved about his game so far and how have you made that assessment? There are a few highlights where he's made some nice plays / assists, but highlights don't necessarily reflect his game overall so just curious what other information is out there.

it is weird having defensive prospects to be excited about

also ovechkin is ridiculously good at hockey, my seats are like 5 rows back from where he walked through the entire team in the first 20 seconds of the game

Anyone at the game notice that there is a new goal song? I kind of like it, although haven't figured out what it is yet.

Slavin had a great 'welcome to the NHL kid' moment when Ovie undressed him. But he settled down and played well the rest of the game. Hanifin is the real deal.

Faulk is just a beast. He's even better than he was last year. I keep forgetting he's only 23.

Versteeg can make some great passes and plays.

3:3 will be fun to watch. It was a bit messy as I think guys are still trying to get used to it, but all that open ice and the long stretch passes, it's going to be insane.

Based just on the gifs it sure looks like all 3 Canes goals were the exact same play. Do I have that right?

eh.. sort of

the nash goal was just a horrible pass by the washington defenseman, so not really a play at all. the gerbe goal was a pass to the slot on the powerplay from the corner and the lindholm goal was a pass to the slot from the halfwall by versteeg, so similar

I liked Slavin's game a lot. I've been hesitant to get on the bandwagon because we do this every year with some kid who looks good in camp, but he looked like a viable NHL player out there.

The Ovie goal was maybe even a healthy thing for him to experience early on, just to get that rookie moment out of the way and move on.

Thanks. When you see a 3 second clip it doesn't really provide much context.

Seems like Slavin has elevated himself into a similar territory that Pesce has been in. I haven't been able to watch since that penguins game so I honestly have no opinion. I don't think the fact he's getting so much playing time has him ahead of Pesce quite yet. I think Pesce just has to beat out Murphy whereas Slavin has a lot of guys to fight off. I don't think I see Peters rolling with more than one rookie D in the top six, so if Hanifin is making it I'm not either of Pesce or Slavin have a chance to start up top. Maybe first call ups.

Even if they are ready, which I am skeptical of, I think it's better to put Pesce and Slavin in Charlotte for the year. Even Faulk was in Charlotte for most of a season before coming up. Some AHL seasoning and systems work will be great for both of them. It's nice to see their skill and think about the 2016-2017 Hurricanes needing to make room for them both in the lineup, as it sounds like. And Fleury. Ho boy. Faulk-Fleury-Hanifin-Pesce-Slavin-Hainsey? We probably need to trade one of them for a similar forward.

I'm no expert, but he just seems to have a very well rounded game with no holes and just seems to be reasonably good in pretty much every aspect without being amazing or flashy.

He's like the Gerald Wallace of hockey.

I think the guy before Hoyle ended up taking a job at UNC, at least I seem to remember reading that here once.

Mark Roberts was the original (GBoro), if I recall. He had to quit when the games moved from a regular start time of 7:30 to 7:00. Couldn't make it from his gig at WRAL.
