I'd agree with the first, but not as much with the second.

Our third pairing with those two is a bit of mess.

Maybe I'm misreading, but I think his point is that players like Murphy don't make great 3rd pairing guys. Namely, he's not good defensively and isn't good enough offensively to be a specialist.

Actually, come to think of it he reminds me a lot of Hunwick back when he was in Boston. Except Hunwick was better then.

I can only see him moving for waiver fodder or an old, overpaid player to a team that really needs some cap space. And I don't see why Carolina would take on a guy like that.

In my somewhat limited viewing of him, I don't think he is the type of guy that is going to cut it in the NHL. His style doesn't work for a bottom pair defenseman, and he isn't good enough to be a top four guy. He just screams AHL lifer to me.

"Carolina's Ryan Murphy is a different story. He doesn't seem to be a fit for Hurricanes head coach Bill Peters. Murphy's name has been used as trade bait for months, but now the Canes are actively shopping him. With a salary of $750,000 this year and $825,000 next season, the 23-year-old, right-shot defenceman will likely be on the move."

NYR has the one and only Dan Girardi. He can provide some veteran leadership to that young Carolina blueline...

(I had a hard time typing that)

The big difference is Murphy is so much more skilled - but I'll be honest, I'd be acquiring him with the idea of converting him to a forward.

Hmm

Oilers shuffling the deck here too ...waived Lander, Sent Simpson back to Bakersfield....Murphy would be a nice PP option

I'm sure someone will cough up a 3rd. Seems to be the going rate for guys drafted recently with a high pedigree and a GM is hoping a change in scenery might benefit - Schultz, Yakupov

Murphy and I went to the same high school, St. Thomas of Villanova in King City, I'm surprised by how much he has regressed. He was expected to be an absolute stud and all of the teachers including my old gym coach for 4 years who also trains him during the summer at the school. Guess he is too small, soft and one dimensional but would be a nice reclamation project for a team. Alex Pietrangelo also went to Villanova and I've gone there over the summers to see Coach Blasi train him, man oh man is Alex ever a beast, to think he went after Bogosian and one pick ahead of Luke Schenn drives me nuts
