He's the best player of the 3, and signed at the lowest number.

So... that.

I think its arguable he is the best of the three. They are all somewhat equivalent as they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Slavin is best defensively, Risto best offensively and Jones most balanced.

I am just making the point that a player signing at the market rate is not a steal. It could be a steal in a couple years as these guys continue to develop, but calling one a steal is calling all of them a steal.

Disgustingly good deal for the Canes. Like, Slavin needs to fire his agent level good for the Canes.

Why is this deal so much better than the Seth Jones or Rasmus Ristolainen deals?

The money and terms are very similar and they are all quality young defenseman. Carolina just signed him at market rate. No discount, no amazing deal. It is market rate. WIll it turn out to be a good deal for the canes? sure it could, but just like Jones, Risto, Lindholm, etc.

Good job getting him signed, but this is no steal or sweetheart deal.

The Canes were able to buy, I believe, 2 additional years of unrestricted free agency, relative to the other examples, without having to pay upwards of $6 mil per for the privilege.

I mostly agree with your general point. It's not a steal. I do think it's a little better than a fair deal, though.

Not overpaid/underpaid at this moment. But, it has potential to be an absolute steal.

He will have to produce a fair bit more offensively for this to be considered a steal. For now, it's the right number for what he provides (excellent Defense and decent Offense).

Let me put it this way: Slavin plays his style at a higher level than the other two play their styles.

That being the case, getting him on a longer contract at a lower number actually is a significant difference. Not a huge one, but enough to identify.

He could've gotten a million more at least, and no canes fan would've been that shocked. That's why canes fans are so happy. He could've held us hostage for cash, and probably would've gotten it. He 's above Pesce and Hanifin so they're deals will likely fall in line, which means the canes young D will be in place for years during their prime. This is a very good day for Canes fans. It maybe "market", but the Canes fans aren't used to getting good deals.

Time value of money and buying out UFA status is what makes it more than fair IMO. This contract doesn't even start until after next season, so while it might be a fair number now, even if he never provides anything more than he does today, it's going to look fantastic in 3-4 years.

Good deal provided he doesn't regress at all and I don't see why he would. He's already a top pairing Dman at only 23.

Depends on how long it is. He definitely projects to be a $5M type defenseman in the future, but to me he's a bit south of that in the present. I could see something like $4.5Mx3 if they can't agree on something long term.

I can't see GMRF giving Pesce a contract that takes him to a year from UFA with that kind of AAV. $4.5 mil should be around the market rate on a long-term deal (see Hamonic adjusted for cap inflation or even Gostisbehere/Zaitsev for a recent comparable.)

I think he gets 2 years in the $2.5-$3 mil range (a la Ceci or Dumba) or perhaps more likely, that long-term deal.

Good deal for the Canes. This makes me even more happy that Chia locked up Klefbom at 4.16M for 7 years!
