So where did Carolina find the money to pay him 5.3M? Wasn't there rumors of the team can't afford long term deals because of money issues? I mean, that's a great deal, but I wasn't expecting them to sign a long term deal due to money issues. Please fill me in if I am wrong.

I don't remember hearing any rumor close to that.

You are wrong. Canes have never had an issue paying long term deals for good players that they see as core. Skinner, Faulk, Staal, etc..

What they don't do often, is pay the premium price for long term deals for UFAs.

Is he really a $5.3 million dollar defencemen after 2 years in the NHL? Or they paying based on potential ?

I don't know too much about him... Is he that good?

led the Hurricanes in blocked shots (161), takeaways (83), time on ice per game (23:26) and shorthanded time on ice per game (3:07), and was tied for first in plus/minus with a plus-23 rating, the fourth-best plus/minus season in franchise history

The former. If he never improves a bit from how he played this past season, the deal is still fantastic.

I have to admit I hardly ever seen this guy play, but judging from the comments on HFBoards this guy sounds like he's going to be a Norris winner someday. Yet many hockey fans who don't post on here are probably wondering why he got such a big contract. Slavin is either the most overrated player in the league, or the most underrated player in the league, depending on how you look at it.

Any 7 year deal comes with risk but I think this will most likely be a great deal for the Canes.

Right but that doesn't answer my question. Because the ownership was losing money (or some kind of issues a year ago) I thought they were under an internal cap. Which in turn meant the longer term deals they couldn't commit for those reasons. I'm not being ignorant or anything. I'm just trying to understand what has changed since then.

Seems like a pretty great deal from the little I know about him (I. E. He's good, lol).

Good job Canes.

He's at the $5.3 million level now. And the type of game he plays isn't the sort of thing that turns out to be an illusion.

TBH I'm kind of surprised that Slavin was willing to sign this.

I don't think he'll ever win the Norris because he doesn't have the offensive chops (IMO) to get into the running, and right or wrong, offensive production is key to winning the Norris.

Francis can make any move he feels betters the team. They cut out short selling tickets to get fans in seats, and in turn increased ticket revenue even with less seats sold.
