He looked a lot better than I would have expected tonight. Had a good jump and some nice instant chemistry with Svechnikov and Kotkaniemi. Maybe it’s just new-guy energy and it falls off. But I thought he was way more washed up than that.

General manager Eric Tulsky said that the idea of trading for Rantanen came about in the off-season, and negotiations started to pick up until about six to eight weeks ago.
The Hurricanes were motivated to get the deal done and pushed to get it over the finish line over the last two weeks.
"We wanted to get him as early as we can," Tulsky told reporters on Saturday. "We want to have as much time with him on our team as possible."What also took time to get a deal done was that there were other options on the table for the Hurricanes to consider.
As Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported, Carolina was also in conversations with the Vancouver Canucks about a potential trade involving either J.T. Miller or Elias Pettersson.
"As we started to feel like teams needed to make a decision, that meant we needed everybody to get their best offers on the table," Tulsky said about the multiple trade options the Hurricanes were exploring. "And it was both on our side and on our counterparties. Everybody had multiple offers that they had to weigh and decide where they wanted to go.
"So, it was sort of time for everyone to figure out what they wanted to do, and this deal got done. I'm not sure what's going to happen with other teams but it is a complicated dance right now."

With Mikko Rantanen set to make his Hurricanes' debut, the Hurricanes now on the clock to try to convince the pending free agent to avoid going to the open market.

We saw them move on from a costly acquisition in Guentzel last season, who seemed like a great fit. Dundon plays hardball.. so who knows.

The cost of doing that is quite expensive in this case, considering said player will have offers all over this summer that are blank checks...

Once upon a time Colorado Avalanche had a 10OA draft pick. That pick was then turned into 681 points in 620 regular season games, 101 points in 81 post season games, a Stanley Cup, Martin Necas, Jack Drury, a 2nd round draft pick and a 4th round draft pick by Mikko Rantanen.

Now some Avs fans prefer to call him a passenger. That's lovely.

Cool trade to see before trade deadline shenanigans and good for Carolina to get in before any of the Vancouver drama sorted itself out.

Not saying it's a direct comparable but this Rantanen trade feels like it has shades of the Panarin to NYR deal to me.

That is definitely one positive to Necas compared to Rantanen. Necas has proven to be able to drive his own line. They’ve tried this with Rantanen many times in Colorado but it always failed.

If Mackinnon is able to stay close to his regular level of play without Mikko this gives the Avs an entirely different look if Necas can offensively drive some secondary scoring. But if Mackinnon’s play falls off without having Mikko it gives the Avs an entirely different look in a negative sense. That high end top line has always been what separated the Avs from the teams they’ve outperformed.

I think that's a bit disingenuous.

We've seen Rants drive a line when Mack was injured or occasionally when they were split up. And oftentimes that's when he looked his best. But for whatever reason Bednar didn't separate them for long periods of time. It's fair to say we don't know if Rants could drive his own line over the course of a whole season, but he also never got an opportunity to prove that.

It’s unfortunate so many posts think Avs fans are booting our guy as he’s walking out the door. The criticisms are valid in that he has large tendencies to not be visible all game but still manage to put up points. It’s been called all season and into last year as well.

Carolina still got the best player on this deal and won the trade by that factor alone and we will still miss the moose. Both things can be true.

Somehow it makes me sad that a beloved superstar player in his prime, who endured the worst times of a franchise and did his own part in turning things around and going all the way to a cup, is traded this cold-bloodedly. Apparently, the Avs management didn't even really try to re-sign him even if he was willing to take a hometown discount, but they had decided to trade him a long time ago with no communication to the player whatsoever. I would love to see this kind of a mismanagement get some backlash, but NA sports culture is all about business. I remember that there were some rumors about similar dissatisfaction in Vegas with the way they treated Fleury, but in the end it resulted in nothing.

i wouldn't believe that narrative. avs would have tried to re-sign him but the numbers weren't working. if miko didn't get his number he'd walk. so your only choice at that point is trade or free agency.

The only concrete pieces of information right now are that Rantanen really wanted to stay and was willing to give a discount, but the discussion with Avs management wasn't as active as he would've wanted it to be (as per his interview), the Canes management had been working on this deal for 6 to 8 weeks prior (as per Tulsky's interview) and the Avs offered Rantanen 11.25 million deal earlier in the season. All things right now point to the fact that MacFarland lowballed Rantanen and was more than happy to use him as a trade asset.

EDIT: The latest rumors indicate that Avs ceiling for an offer was a 11.75 million deal. Just comes to show how little they wanted to keep him.

And Mikko wanted something close to what MacKinnon is making. Probably 13 mil or just slightly under.

no it doesn't matter at all with contracts, if it does it wont move the needle very much,
you like to think it does but it doesn't. lets say Marner never made the playoffs once in his career. with his production he's getting paid big time no matter what

well Dubas is just a dummy, he thought this was going to be the market moving forward and then everyone just kinda stayed the same. that was for sure on Dubas. Marner signed for too much but he did have a 90+ point season. they should have taken the offer the year before at 8.5m lol, either way both players should be pretty close. I was actually pretty surprised when I realized Marner has out produced Rants

What bugs me the most about both players is how they are going after max deals. It's selfish and Rantanen just screwed himself over from staying on a dynasty team. I'm sure he will do fine with the Canes. We will see.

8x $14M = $112M
vs
8x $12M = $96M

Rantanen has already earned $58M in his career. $154M vs $170M. So you are going to screw over MacKinnon (who left money on the table) because you want $170M and $154M is not enough? Come on man! Agents are needed but sometimes, they are the problem. Feeding the players ego so the agents cut gets higher

NHL CBA is 50/50 split. Leave a little for the middle of the line-up so your GM can ice a competitive roster. Just because you left a little on the table, it don't mean the owners are making more money, it means your teammates are.

If Marner wants more respect from his team and fans and management, he will take $10M or $11M and put less pressure on his back.

This is not like we are asking them to take 50% less pay. But those agents will twist it that way... player has to "take care of their family" narrative. That applies more to the middle of the roster players who are forced to take less than it does for the stars.

I mean I posted the stats to show how Rantanen has gotten downright destroyed without Nathan Mackinnon over the last 3 years. It’s not like they kinda fall off a little. It’s pretty drastic.

Over the last 3 combined seasons Rantanen has a 41.94 Xgf away from Mackinnon 5v5.

If you want to talk in actual goals during that time instead of expected, Rantanen has an actual gf% of 42.86.

Again this is combined stats for this season, last season and the one before. It’s not something that’s made up. You’re definitely correct in saying he’s never gotten an opportunity to prove it over a full season but when his results are this poor Bednar would be an absolute bozo if he tried to force it for any longer than he did.
