Mark Stone is the last rental anywhere near Rantanen that I recall being traded. He got Brannstrom, when he was considered a legitimate top 20 prospect in the league and a 2nd round pick, but that included an extension (that was signed down the road for reasons related to the CBA).

You have to consider the difference between the value of a player, and the value of a player without an extension. Colorado doesn't want/need futures. They need the best possible cost controlled player. This makes sense if Rantanen wouldn't sign in Colorado. You can make an argument that he would be worth max on an extension, and he probably wasn't asking max, but if they couldn't sign him getting Necas cost controlled for 2 years isn't a bad get.

It's a tough pill to swallow trading away a player like Rantanen, and it's possibly a franchise crippling move, but you can't force a player to sign or to not want to test the market if his intent is to become a UFA on July 1st.

Carolina giving him 14m is a lot different than Colorado giving him 14m though. Rantanen getting 14m from Carolina doesn’t break the Hurricanes wage structure.
Oh for sure, his playoffs are worth the money, just rather it not be the Avs for sure as much as it sucks to lose him. As I said, can spend the difference in parts of the line up that the Avs need to work on
