Seems like they downgraded but got someone cost controlled for an extra year, who they might be able to re-sign within their salary structure.

I don't think Carolina necessarily has to re-sign Rantanen for this to make sense. It's a huge upgrade.

I think they're betting that Necas alongside Mack isn't a huge drop-off, and they get him for an extra year. Wonder if there's another shoe to drop though.

Necas isn’t Mikko level. He’s been great. But he’s not that. And I'm not sure I trust him to be a playoff boss like Moose.

If there isn’t something really, really significant coming with Necas, it’s bad value for a team with one goal this year.
