It's semantics. Teams can retain up to 50% of a player's salary. Since the player is now the property of the second team in the trade, that team can also retain up to 50%.

I would suspect Florida tacked on to the end of the deal here in a transaction that was going to happen either way.

I also am higher on Domi than most, probably because I watched his 72 point season as Montreal's 1C, and it doesn't feel like that long ago.

If Florida didn't think there was a way to get another team (Not them) to eat the salary then I don't think they do it. however There are tons of teams that have the cap space to eat the money. so If losing $'s (domi's money) to them worth a 6th or is it not.. they said it was.. Now would they have done it for Tampa? I HIGHLY doubt it.. Would they be better off if Montreal Buffalo Arizona Seattle San Jose got the pick? not really.

Well none of the other team who can retain (outside of Montreal) care about screwing Boston if they were indeed in on Domi but if Carolina said to Florida, ‘hey, we need the cap space to get Domi and stop him from going to Boston, you in for a 6th?’ I don’t see why Florida wouldn’t do that knowing one of them are facing the Bruins in the 1st round.

This is my perspective. Its not like Florida was the missing link between Carolina and Columbus in the Domi deal. Any fool can retain salary. We blew a lot of picks, we at least got one back. Yeah it's a 6th but there's always a chance.
