If the Flames guys I follow on Twitter are any indication, gonna be a lot of angry Flames fans about this one...

Maybe not angry, but a little disappointed. I think he'd have likely been an upgrade on at least one of the guys who will be on the bottom pairing this year.

Canes were one of the teams most heavily interested in him last year when he made the jump. No big surprise move here, only surprise really is that Calgary didn't re-sign him first.

It's an absolute joke that Calgary couldn't re-sign their 4th best d-man because of ridiculous contracts to a bunch of plugs. And the worst part is, it looks like they'll sign Grossman to the same deal.

Another great move by the canes this summer.

Which means it will be another year of our D being logjammed...

I am glad he found a home. He is NHL-material, though bottom pairing + PP.

However, very much disagree with some Flames fans on this one. Wideman is overpaid and had a tough season, but in no world is Nakladal and upgrade. At 600k? I would prefer Nakladal on the bottom pairing, but Wideman is a much better all-round defencemen. Engelland is much more steady on D as well, and provides a physical element.

Jokipakka seems to me to be a serviceable top 4 option - ideally a 5, but seemed to do well enough defensively as a 4.

He is better than Wotherspoon and Kulak, but those two have higher upsides I would say. I was hoping Nakladal would get signed by the Flames - great depth defencemen, and you can't have too many of those kicking around. Glad he found a home.

Will be interesting to see how he does throughout the season, and how Carolina fans feel about him. Just remember - he is a depth defencemen, not a steady top 4 option, so don't let some people raise your expectations to anything more than a steady bottom-pairing guy.

And that's exactly what the Canes signed him for. To be a 6/7.

With Faulk, Slavin, Hanifin, Hainsey, Pesce...they aren't looking for him to play top 4 unless there are major injuries.

Good Signing, was hoping the oilers would snag him instead of Gryba (who may yet be cut).

He's a solid NHL player that was worth an NHL/1-way contract. He's a Jordan replacement with different attributes, but basically the same level player.

If he was a solid NHL player it wouldnt take him this long to find a cheap one way deal, hes a dime a dozen player..

He's an ok 6/7 guy. Overrated by many Flames fans.

He's a very solid 5/6. I'd imagine the team wasn't super scraping the bottom of the barrel by inviting him to the world cup.

Congrats Canes fans. You'll like him. I'm guessing we couldn't make the contract moves to bring him back.

Good signing but don't get carried away with the top four stuff, If he plays in the top four your defense sucks. He's a solid 13-14 minute player, good shot and decent in his own zone but not much of a puck mover.

If the Flames could have found a sucker to take Wideman's final year contract he still would be a Flame. Good luck to him though.

Nope. He would of been signed much earlier if he was a solid NHL d-man.

He's a solid 6th/7th defenseman. But he's a 28 year old undrafted rookie who's only had 27 games in the NHL to show what he can do. Those are things that doesn't work in your favour when you're looking for a new job. He did just fine in the World Cup, against better competition than he's gonna face in the NHL. Clearly he did enough in the tournament to impress on the Hurricanes.

And what, according to you, is a "solid NHL defenseman"? Name me a 6th/7th defenseman that's not a dime a dozen player. They almost grow on trees...
