So this will hit us on cap this year? I mean, OK... I guess. But first rounder will be low probably.

You know what I find hilarious? Columbus' GM saying $3.8 million is too much for a 1st round pick, but he mortgaged his whole franchise for an ill-advised playoff run.
That guy so cheap he took some guy from Europe for GM the job.Maybe it’s too much for his cheap ass owner.
Marleau would not have waived his NMC if Carolina had not explicitly agreed to buy him out
At best the Canes said "give us 1 day to pitch our team to you and if not we promise a buyout"
Toronto's pick was #22 this year. Next year they will have the same team minus Marleau/Gardiner and possibly Hainsey, Zaitsev, and any other cap casualties that are coming - worst case losing Marner to an offer sheet. Frederik Andersen can play well but he isn't a star. Especially behind a defense that is looking suspect at best.
I could see that pick being ~#20 again which is great for a deep draft.

I want them to finish with the 10th pick, then have the 11th place team win the lottery, leapfrog them, and force them down to the 11th pick.Toronto is going to finish with the 11th pick then win the lottery, and Leaves fans are going to claim how great Dubas is to have had the foresight to lottery protect the pick, forgetting that their team was a huge disappointment in the process. A lot of them are already claiming this is some sort of brilliant move and huge win after boasting all offseason about how easy it would be to clear salary while simultaneously getting value back for their boat anchors.
I'd bet a lot of it is lip service to prevent the league from getting pissed about the fact that we're very, very, very blatantly exploiting loopholes in rules against buying and selling assets and trading cap space.

Are we though? Bad contract is a negative asset, draft pick is a positive asset, both assets are tradeable, we get a pick and take the cap hit for a buyout that's explicitly in accordance to the Paragraph 13 of the SPC.I'd bet a lot of it is lip service to prevent the league from getting pissed about the fact that we're very, very, very blatantly exploiting loopholes in rules against buying and selling assets and trading cap space.

I doubt that, but in that senerio we would have the first overall pick. You take the good with the bad.Toronto is going to finish with the 11th pick then win the lottery, and Leaves fans are going to claim how great Dubas is to have had the foresight to lottery protect the pick, forgetting that their team was a huge disappointment in the process. Get a player like Brady Tkachuk? Ottawa is not disappointed.I want the pick to somehow transfer to 2021 so it will be unprotected. I think the entire league would enjoy watching Toronto pull an Ottawa.

I guess that is possible. Byram has huge potential.Miss out on a player like Bowen Byram is what he was referring to I think.

I guess it is possible though doubtful, but to pull an Ottawa, you can't have one without the other.I was actually referring to finishing last overall and not having their No. 1 pick.
You kinda can. For example, Pick 10th one year, thus keeping the pick, and get a 1-4 pick via the lottery the next year which then goes to Carolina.I guess it is possible though doubtful, but to pull an Ottawa, you can't have one without the other.
Like I said, it is possible though doubtful, but that is a risk of trading a first round pick. It is different than Ottawa though as Ottawa did in fact draft Brady before finishing last. It would have to be a Toronto if that happened. You kinda can. For example, Pick 10th one year, thus keeping the pick, and get a 1-4 pick via the lottery the next year which then goes to Carolina.
It’s not going to happen though. Leafs pick next year will be 20s-30s. Even if by miracle it isn’t, they won’t struggle 2 years in a row.
The idea of Marleau playing for Carolina has come and passed. I would expect Carolina to buy out Marleau at the end of the week before the June 30 deadline, making him UFA. Still impressive how Carolina got Toronto to move up to a first-round pick as the sweetener. That’s a huge return just to take on a contract which you plan to buy out. The Leafs had hoped to convince the ‘Canes to do it for a second-round draft pick but Carolina hung tough for the first-round pick.
