How about Toews getting the C in Chicago instead of Kane because they still won three Stanley Cups, even though Kane might have been their better player when you look at his stats compared to Toews.Tavares has performed at a pt/g pace since landing in TO. He does so much outside of that stat sheet that contributes to the success of the team. He, like everyone else on this roster is not immune from bad games. Last night was arguably one of his worst games in a leaf Uni. Maybe the worst. He is a determined individual who comes ready to play 95% of the time. In retrospect I would have given the C to Matthews. It was the right time. But JT hasn't done anything to warrant losing the C as of yet. Similar to the bruins with Chara/Bergy. Bergy was always the leader of that team. Chara had just been the guy before him. Everyone knew it was an inevitability that Patrice would get the C at some point, but it never hindered their ability to win a cup and go to the finals 2 other times. The boys in the room know who the leaders are. Matthews doesn't need the C to have that known
I think the only time in Maple Leafs history when a captain had the C taken away was when Harold Ballard did that to Darryl Sittler, even though he got it back.Stripping him of the Leafs captaincy would be followed up by a lot of turmoil. Like a trade, buyout or Robidas Island scenario. It would definitely be a nuclear option.
This was always gonna be his team. You can count on the Dubes to mess up just about everything he touches though. It pretty much ensures he doesn't resign either imho.It should’ve been Matthews when it was announced.
I always get a chuckle from people talking about who the captain of a team should be without being in the room. The players know who they look to etc. etc. etc. That said, even though I wouldn't have voted anyway, what a horrible list of options in the poll [sorry about saying that OP but really?]
I can agree, Tavares is a great player and is just in the off-set of his prime but when you think of the Leafs you think of Matthews. This is something I always believed to be honest and now people are starting to realize since the honeymoon is over.
Matthews should have always been the captain of this team. By far our best player and clearly the leader on this team if we are going anywhere. Babcock got his way on this and decided to give it to vet.
JT is not the superstar we all think he is. He is good/great mostly but he is more of that secondary piece with mitch and will. Help support matty.
I think the C is weighing him down and he just isnt that good anymore.
Would you consider an exchange of the C any time soon?
Forgetting about the contract he had when he played in Toronto, do you think last season the Leafs missed someone who was a veteran like Patrick Marleau and whatever leadership he might have brought to the team?Well, the organization made a point to add veteran leadership and characters in the room, so that's got to be a comment on not having enough of it as of 2019-20.

It was reported multiple times that San Jose offered Tavares $13 million. The right decision was made at the time. AM34 will be captain some day if he remains with the team. The episode in the off season set him back. JT was already a captain and was better prepared to handle the pressure and off ice issues. I believe it was a reward for choosing the Leafs in free agency anyway.
What I don't believe is all the BS about 2 other teams offering more money (ie 13m by SJ) very very doubtful!
Doesn't prove anything to me. Everyone is free to believe what they want, I rely on facts not hearsay. It was reported multiple times that San Jose offered Tavares $13 million.
How the Toronto Maple Leafs signed John Tavares - Sportsnet.ca
Wilson wouldn’t discuss San Jose’s pitch, but word is he told Tavares, “You are the final piece for us.” It has also been rumoured (but never confirmed) that the Sharks were willing to pay $13.5 million per year for seven years. “That was a confident group,” one source says. “They felt they were the best option for John, and they showed it.”
John Tavares, Sharks face off with no regrets over how free agency unfolded - Sportsnet.ca
They were even willing to go as high as $91-million to sign No. 91, which is $2-million more per season on a seven-year deal than he ended up getting from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Those were reports from Sportsnet by Elliotte Friedman and Chris Johnston who are their top Insiders. So I trust them reporting something like that.Doesn't prove anything to me. Everyone is free to believe what they want, I rely on facts not hearsay.
