Value of: Capspace: who has got it?

That's not a question I feel like I can answer because in the case of Tavares and Knies I have no idea.

I know Tavares will get less because there is no shot he gets 11 million again but how much less?

Will there be deferred money like there is in a few contracts around the league including McCabe's deal?

Knies I'll guess he gets a bridge at around 6X4

Marner? Who knows?
6 years x 4m or 6m x 4 years?

LA has about 25M in cap space with a 19 man roster.

I suspect the 5 RFAs on the roster sign for less than 20m combined, which will give Calgary 15m+ in space to work with. They also had a ton of space last summer and our only notable UFA signing (and I'm being generous) was Anthony Mantha to a 1-year deal.

The point is we don't need to bring either back. But we can bring both back or some combination of one of them and new players. Lots of flexibility.

Knies is not getting more than 4M on a bridge deal. I would expect he gets a 7AAV deal with term right now. 4M x 2 years most likely.

Tavares is not getting an albatross Stamkos deal from us
Knies is a 22 year old power forward pacing for 60pts.. you really think 4M is enough? Maybe if he's not eligible for offer sheets or arbitration?

LA seems the most dangerous for big game hunting. It is different the amount of players that don’t want to sign there though

High taxes are clearly a factor. But rantanen would have signed in Toronto but not LA. Odd to me.

I think they are the front runner for Marner. Unless top wingers don’t think they will have a C to play with when kopitar leaves

As a Blackhawks fan I will tell you about the dangers of spending cap space before it’s official. I remember thinking Kane and Toews extensions would be no big deal due to the strong Canadian dollar and tar sands blah blah blah. Ended up being the death knell of our dynasty.

So with a stormy economy on the horizon, nothing is guaranteed

But what are you guys doing though? Are you still rebuilding? Re-tooling? Going for the playoffs? I can never understand Flames' ownership.
We're re-building/tooling. We've really done nothing to venture from that path, except have a rookie goalie stand on his head and put us in the playoff race.

Starting with trading Toffoli around the '23 draft, we have only made 2 trades that added someone older than 25 (Miromanov who was 26 and Kuzmenko who was a cap dump) and our UFA additions have been minimal.

These are the trades and FA signings since Conroy took over as GM:
  • Traded Toffoli for Sharangovich and a 3rd
  • Signed Oesterle to a 1-year deal (he played more for the Wranglers than the Flames)
  • Claimed AJ Greer off waivers
  • Traded Zadorov for a 3rd and 5th
  • Traded Lindholm for a 1st, 4th, Kuzmenko, Brzustewicz and Jurmo
  • Claimed Brayden Pachal off waivers
  • Traded Tanev for a 2nd and Grushnikov
  • Claimed Joel Hanley off waivers
  • Traded Hanifn for a 1st, 3rd and Miromanov
  • Traded a 5th for Nikita Okhotyuk (he's still 24 and we hold his rights indefinitely)
  • Traded Markstrom for a 1st and Bahl
  • Signed Mantha to a 1-year deal (it's believed the plan was to feed him minutes and then trade him at the deadline, but he blew out his knee)
  • Signed Jake Bean to a 2-year deal
  • Signed Ryan Lomberg to a 2-year deal
  • Signed Tyson Barrie to a 1-year deal
  • Traded Pelletier, Kuzmenko, 2nd and 7th for Frost and Farabee (Farabee and Frost are only 1 and 2 years older than Pelletier)

Good thing is we have more than enough cap space to make anything work with matching. I think probably the only way we don't match is if a team offers enough for 4 firsts, especially if they are a bubble team.

I think the Leafs bridge him for 2 years and I think that cost 4M

They've been very consistent since Treliving left. Get younger, get more assets, get better when you can.

Not sure whats so complicated, they have zero intention of sucking for a decade

I hear ya but what are you doing with your additional cap space? Grabbing bad contracts for more assets or making a run at Marner? Feel me? Which direction are you guys headed?

Utah Hockey Club:
Just under $74M cap, still need to sign RFA McBain and 2 Russians are expected to sign ELCs, But & Simashev.
Appears to be 1 spot open and a need for a top 2 line center with a willingness to take on more cap...

No interest in a winger. Tavares or Bennet would be more likely.

Then get a top 4 defender. Two of them if we trade Rasmus.

Even the Leafs have a crap ton of cap space. Their entire roster is signed next season outside of Knies (RFA), Marner, Tavares. Assuming Tavares stays him and Knies likely make up the 11M there.

So Leafs would have 14-15M to either sign Marner or replace him with 2-3 forwards
so 26 mil
at least14 mil to marner
prolly 6m to knies
better hope JT will take that TML discount because im sure there are teams that would offer him 8mil aav

Everything you’ve seen with contracts before this season just throw out the window because a completely new benchmark is going to begin this off-season.

The numbers that are going to be thrown around are gonna be crazy, I really don’t think some people realize what someone like Sam Bennett is going to go for.

I would not be shocked if he breaks 9 million

This is what I’m trying to remind fellow Habs fans when we talk about cap space. Yes MTL has a bunch right now and will have more when Price’s contract is off the books. But Hutson, Demidov, hell even Reinbacher may step it up. That cap space will vanish quickly. But you also need to utilize the flexibility of ELC’s to win sometimes too

Likely neither. I can’t see Marner wanting to be in Calgary and I don’t see the Flames wanting to pay big bucks for another winger.

I think they did try to tank this year. They were right near the cap floor for most of the year. Their goaltending was much better than expected though and their D wasn’t as awful as it could have been. Outside Huberdeau, Kadri, Coronato and Zary, the forwards weren’t great.

Theyll sign their RFAs. Maybe bring in more prospects like Kerins, Kuznetsov, Solovyov, Parekh etc. and continue to develop their other prospects. They don’t have a lot of high end talent but they do have a lot of depth.

They’ve got 6 picks in the first two rounds over the next couple of years so I’m not sure how many more picks they’d want. You can only sign so many.
