I would absolutely hope for Protas to be back Wednesday. If he was close enough to skate with the team and travel to Montreal it must mean he’s been knocking on the door, an extra day off bodes well. I expect the Caps to bring what they have in game 5, I’m sure they don’t want to go back to Montreal.

Well well well. Maybe there was a grand conspiracy to throw off the internet detectives.

The goalie revealed that he did not suffer a lower-body injury, as initially believed, but rather a head issue that forced him out of Friday’s loss.
"I kind of got my bell rung a bit there," Thompson said. "Scary. It definitely could have been a lot worse."

Thompson explained that the hit, combined with the fact that he lost his balance and his injury track record, prompted further testing to ensure he was fit to return.

"I had to do some protocol," Thompson said. "I kind of lost my balance getting up. But luckily, things were OK, and I’m able to play. But thankful that it wasn’t worse, because it definitely, I think, looked a lot worse than it was."

As the saying goes, be careful about throwning stones. I get MTL has been babies but it’s not like this crew hasn’t done plenty of bitching about the reffing. that said, I love how Carbs handled the questions around the reffing. He too is wise beyond his years.

If it was a grand conspiracy, Strome gave away the game that night. He said that he thought it was just a balance issue, and that his leg was ok. I guess no one believed him and thought that was mostly his hope cause he caused the accident?

In any event, I still can’t believe he played yesterday. I like Chuck, but really thought our chances were done along with LT on Friday night.

I get Carbs wanted to give Protas a bit more rest and perhaps not messing up the chemistry on the rice while winning, but I am ready to have Pro in the lineup. For starters, I would rather see him play his first playoff game in this series to get him going versus first game against Carolina. Secondly, he makes us better. Better on the PK. More scoring into the lineup. More size and defense into the game. Why wait to lose to put him in.

In terms of place in lineup. I’m still not messing with the first line (out of the gate). I’m putting him on third line with Eller and Leonard. maybe Pro deters X a bit from his runs on Eller.

I do think I’ll change my tune a bit on who comes out. Was saying it should be Mangi and leave Raddysh (as a righty) on 4th line. I’m leaning towards Mangi on 4th line with Raddysh on nacho duty.

I don't follow the media for other teams, but how often to Cup winning teams complain about the reffing these days?

In the past you'd get some gamesmanship and "working the refs" and that was considered pretty normal. It was expected. But I don't think the league is like that anymore.

The teams doing the most complaining now are getting distracted, and are giving themselves excuses to lose.

Paul Maurice used to be a big whiner but i think he's toned that down a lot to the media. He gets heated during games though. I could be wrong but for teams going far in the Playoffs the comments are usually coming from the coach, if not at all. They want their players focusing on their play, nothing else.

I don't think this is even some kind of ''working the refs''. It's letting your emotions getting the best of you and focusing on all the wrong things.

In the most hilarious quotes of the day, these gems from Jakub Dobes:

''I don't really want to point fingers, i never ever do that. I just hope we don't get them in Washington.''

"I thought that deserved at least a one-game suspension," said Dobes, speaking about Ovechkin's hit on Evans.

"Apparently, it's not the case. I don't know what to say.

"I guess I don't know the rules.

I feel like the referees should have blown the whistle.

I mean, it was scary, but I guess the rules don't apply to everyone in this league."

I don't really want to point fingers, because i never do that? Sure, bud. Then he goes on to rant Ovechkin and Wilson are dirty players who don't play with the same rules. Oh and on that topic the rules suck too because the rule book didn't allow the referees to blow the whistle when Carrier got hurt by the clean hit. Not only the rules but seems like DoPS also suck because they seem to think that Ovechkin and Wilson doesn't deserve suspensions. Also the referees should be changed for the Game 5 because Dobes didn't like them.

But remember, he doesn't like to point fingers. It's just not him.

We'll see how this kind of 'working the refs' work when you are calling for them to be removed.

Yeah, experienced players used to giving NHL interviews would praise the opposing player while highlighting the controversy of the hit and point towards the responsibility of the hitter. Kinda like when Crosby criticized Wilson's high hits.
Openly questioning the refs' and DOPS competence and even hinting on bias won't win the Habs any reputation points. Particularly when Evans was already almost killed once by Scheifele due to not bothering to look where he was skating.

Wilson mock-crying meme more appropriate than ever.

Bingo its what I theorized happened.

Never trust a person that has been hit in the head to reveal their injuries accurately. I have seen it in the NFL many times. A guy flat on his back, arms sticking straight up. That's not rigor mortis Mr. Internet Doctor. Its just fencing. Just a harmless little bell ring.

My finger hurts. Um yeah Mr. Carrier... you got hit by a freight train. I what?

Was PLD ever utilized as a two-way/shut-down center on the teams he played for previously? Or is that a recent development, an opportunity Carbs saw that other coaches didn't?

Just wondering if fans of the previous teams he's played for didn't even know this element of his game existed. Which would explain the cluelessness.

He's played 5-on-5 nearly 30 minutes against Slaf-Suzuki-Caufield. Guess how many goals those 3 have scored in those 30 minutes?

Zero.
I feel like PL's defensive progressed since he's a Caps player. I was surprised by that. Because I always felt that he was a one way player.

In this series, Dubois contributed more defensively than offensively.

Could be a Selke candidate one day if he continues like that.

I do think people need to cut MSL a bit of slack on the referees. While he has been coaching a few years, this is his first playoff series. He will learn (or at least he had better). That's where Carberry has the benefit of experience, despite being very young. He's gone through a lot of playoff series as an ECHL, AHL, and now NHL head coach and understands that the coach needs to project calmness and confidence to his team.

I'm reminded of the video of Craig Berube telling Marc Savard to chill on the bench. There's a time and a place for showing emotions on the bench. If you're always losing your head a la Boudreau, that has a negative impact on your team's composure.

I want to mention two things.

First, team invested heavily in Sandin and then Chychrun. They better deliver. I dont trust Sandin in playoffs (and I liked Djoos more even though he was even less strong), I dont see JC6 being confident enough and versatile enough. He's not on Carlson's level yet (and Carlson himself is aging obviously).

So this defense looks vulnerable on the left side. Will wait and see ofc. Right side should be able to do their part.

If Sandin continues to make goals against out of thin air - fire him to the moon (for a good price) and play Hutson junior eventually.

JC6 is here to stay obviously, hopefully he will find some pleasure in pulling the trigger himself with authority and will grow into critical piece on the ice (I mean that bad pass to Ovi instead of shooting in PP costed us and I take it as a lack of confidence).

Second, Demidov slewfooting Wilson... I wont ever be his fan I guess, f him.

Overall, I liked that guys are battling through some things and getting ready for Carolina. It wasn't looking right in last games of regular season. Should see if they win G5 and then can do some damage in Round 2.

'bell rung' and a concussion are 2 different things. Was the most recent stromer slam classified as a concussion? Sorry, too lazy to google machine it.

We don't know if he had to clear concussion protocol to be able to play on Sunday, but if he was in protocol he obviously cleared it. I'm not worried about his noggin. I thought it was his knee. Apparently they're both fine! :D
