Coming into the WJCs I think Schaefer first is justified. We'll see if the tournament changes that. No Mrtka for the Czechs is a bummer.

Bear is a bit low for me in those rankings. Fiddler could be a fit if still available for the Caps. Ryabkin also. Wang, Nilson, Gastrin and Moore are also interesting IMO in the late first range. Overall it doesn't seem like a tremendously deep draft but still much TBD.

Do people who watch him think Clay Stevenson could be ready to be the backup goalie for the Caps next season?

Feel like this is the year we go goalie. Ravensbergen is from the W and we've watched him for two seasons now scouting Funk and Parascak. He's huge and an outstanding athlete. He's got Mahoney pick written all over him.
Might be a very good move. I believe we are way better stocked at F and D than many think, so timing makes sense to me if we can take a G the staff believe in.

fun Leonard profile/interview: NHL Tonight: Ryan Leonard | NHL.com.

(This could go in the Hershey thread, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Caps try to sign John Leonard for Hershey as soon as this summer.)
The played that in between the 2nd and 3rd periods of the USA game yesterday.

I strongly feel he'll sign right after BC's season is over. Even after the end of BC last season the caps told Leonard they felt he was pro ready. To me that tells me they'd give him a shot with the big club before even Hershey depending on how everything breaks out the 2nd half of the season and into the playoffs potentially.

I think the "goalie of the future" stuff is overrated and that management probably feels the same way, especially after being burned by Samsonov and Vanecek so badly.

While we have a nice volume of D they're all in the complementary puck-moving mold. There isn't anyone who has the ceiling of a real 1 or 2 on a good team. I know a lot of people will say Hutson and while I like him a lot I think he's still a big risk -- look how much his brother has struggled this year. Obviously it's easier said than done to get one of those guys but I would lean offensive D in the first round this year.

Also with McMichael and Protas looking like wings long-term and Lappy graduating out of "prospect" status and struggling I wouldn't mind a center too.

Of course none of this will matter when we trade our first for Marchand at the deadline ;)

Not to mention how frequently we're seeing teams have success poaching backup/1B types

with all the tape out on their older brothers it's kinda crazy that the Caps managed to snag Protas and Hutson where they did
Didn't they trade up a bit to get Protas the Younger? I recall some interview at the draft where they were getting nervous about him getting taken before they picked.

He’s what…arguably 3rd in the ROY race….I’d say he’s doing just fine for “struggling” with 26pts in 34 games at age 20. I think we have a future #1 in ours. 1a or 1b TBD.

There's a difference between putting up points and being a true #1 defenseman. He's having a great rookie year no doubt but he's also getting smoked defensively (by the eye test and the numbers) and relying quite a bit on secondary and powerplay assists. Not to say that that won't come eventually, but on the Ty Smith/Tyson Barrie/Shayne Gostisbehere/Sam Girard/Quinn Hughes spectrum of smaller, puck dominant, scoring defenseman I think the range of outcomes for him is still pretty wide.

Nobody expects him to be a true number 1 immediately, but he looks WELL on his way. A 1a Carlson or a 1b that can anchor your second pair if you choose…we’ll see.

There’s good reason to be hopeful about the younger brother as a top defender.
