Speculation: Caps Roster General Discussion (Coaching/FAs/Cap/Lines/etc) | 2024-25 Summer Edition

Leonard and Wilson on a line just for a few shifts to see them be the bash brothers
While Leonard will play a physical game, I don’t see him as a physical player. Maybe I have to watch him more, but he seems to be a guy will play the body, but not in a big hit type of way. More of an agitator style. Will be interesting to see his game at the NHL level.

Seems like a lot of over-thinkung going on. Leonard's likely the RW3 and is going to play. Doesn't seem too complicated.
When they brought in Beauvillier and paired him with Dowd and Duhaime, it became obvious to me that they were leaving the 3RW (Raddysh/Frank) spot open for Leonard. I have not seen anything to change my mind on that.

Leonard might earn his way out of that spot at some point, but that seems like the obvious place for him to start.

I don’t know why people are down on Eller. He does what a third line center should do. If that line was more offensive people would bitch about them giving up goals, which they would. Solid. Veteran presence. Great for playoffs.

Eller is not much of a play maker but he is defensively responsible. It’s possible this makes a good fit for Leonard and frees him up to focus on scoring.

I wonder what is going on in the kid's mind right now. Everyone is going crazy over him signing on the eve of the playoffs like he's some sort of messiah and I can't wait to see how he responds. That's a lot of weight on a 20 year old's shoulders but hey, when you get this kind of spotlight and opportunity you better convert on it.

One of the great things about the Caps' roster and how it has been constructed is that I think there is no a single combination with Leonard on it that I hate. There are certainly some I like more than others, but whatever it ends up looking like is completely fine.

For the 100th time too -- yes that includes being with Eller or Dowd. Both are very responsible players that both directly help a young player on the ice and indirectly help them get on the ice by making the whole line more trustworthy to a coach.

Well you previously suggested he won’t be that impactful, so that is about to get tested finally.

He's been a captain and a leader and he performed at a high level on the global stage in World Jrs - tournament MVP. That says he's not the type to fold because of pressure. He'll need time to adjust to the speed and size of the NHL game, but he's not some fragile little flower who will melt because the competition got harder. Plus, I am confident in the coaching staff to not "Torts" him. "Torts" is now a verb, to attempt to ruin a kids career by being an asshole.

Carbs has been doing a lot of in game experimenting, hope that can continue.

For some games could go with 5 D and 13 F and get Leonard some reps with lots of people just to see who vibes.

I want to see CMM - PLD - Wilson as the most 'set' of the lines as they all complement each other so well.

I would like to see both Ptotas, Beauvillier, and yes Leonard get some reps at C just to see if anyone takes to it better than expected, which sets up a lot of flexibility and some level of confidence if there are any injuries.

I also want to see this for half a period...

Ovi - Protas- Leonard
CMM - PLD - Wilson
Mangiapane - Strome - Beauvillier
Eller/Dewey- Dowd - Raddysh

Not sure if this is real, being April 1st and all. Says Raddysh is out and he's with Strome and Protas.

He's going from carrying that team and playing ridiculous minutes to playing with 2 really good minutes AND actually getting a good breather in on the bench before having to jump back in.

Putting him with Protas straight away is a good reminder that this is the NHL now. The man is a mountain and does all the little things well with no cheat in his game.

I'm sure Carbs and coaching staff are going to make him comfortable and advise him that
he doesn't need to be 'The Man' right away playing on the #1 team with the #1 offense, just to do your thing, have fun and learn the systems, boom.

Protas -- like McMichael, Beauvillier, and Leonard himself -- is not a center.

The lengths people go to just because they have an irrational hatred of Eller ...

I agree 100%. I am very happy he’s “signed sealed and delivered”, but everyone needs to pump the breaks.

He is a college kid entering the best team (sue me!) in the best league on the planet.

If he has a shit game? Who cares?!!
