Speculation: Caps Roster General Discussion (Coaching/FAs/Cap/Lines/etc) | 2024-25 Summer Edition

The more I hear about Pettersson, the more I think he could be a good fit for the Caps. Apparently, he did very well under Boudreau. But they won't be able to fit his cap hit in this season unless they send back Strome (and Mangiapane plus someone like Bear) and I think trading Strome for Pettersson in-season would definitely upset the chemistry in the room and, at best, only improve the team marginally.

If he's still available in the offseason, I think he could be a nice target.

Why not? Being a landing spot for guys to get a fresh start and flourish is a good thing. Also, DeBrincat has 39 points in 50 games on a shit team this year so he's not that underperforming really.
This. Caps have a knack for finding players who haven’t found their groove yet. Seems like a strength most franchises would love to have. Hence why I would love if they took a swing at Zegras. They can fix him.

BTW, Chychrun and Rantanen share an agent. With that in mind, and given how things ended for Rantanen in Colorado, I'm guessing Chychrun is asking for a lot of money (for now) and am not surprised Chychrun doesn't have an extension yet.

Article I read was the Caps org wanted a little more time to see what the Cap was going to be.

So I’m not sure he wants max numbers. I still think 8x8 would do it. Or close to that.

Yeah, I still think it is 8x8 as well. Maybe 8.5M. But I am sure Chychrun wants to be here as much as much as we want him. I really don’t think he is going to find a better situation and he might regret signing a $10M contract while getting stuck on a shitty team/room/org.

Good article, though I'm tired of everyone talking about the Caps "surprising success." Stop being surprised. It's a really well built team and a great organization.

In other news, that piece got me thinking. I wonder if the Caps could pry DeBrincat away from Detroit. The Wings are a dumpster fire and he's 27 with 2 1/2 more years at less than $8M per.
DeBrincat seems like he should be 35 instead of 27 since it seems like he's been around forever.

What do people think of Boeser as a rental? Reports are he could be available if VAN continues to implode (and they might not be interested re-signing him regardless).

The team could really use his finishing ability in the top 6. Have Boeser and Willy as RW1-2, and push CMM down. He’s also very good in the bumper on the PP.

His cap hit is 6.5M. Barring retention, sending Mangi the other way would work.

A perfect fit and they can take him on half retained without having to send anyone back the other way let alone Mangiapane

I like him. Definitely in the realm of what we are looking for, but (a) I can’t see VAN tracking him out right now unless they go on a nasty losing streak, and (b) I don’t want a RW (right stick). We have Leonard, Miro, and then lessers like Rybinski and Trineyev, and Frank. I’d rarther see a LW

I like Boeser and think he'd do well if liberated from the Canucks craziness. But he might block Lenny. And also Van is 1 point out of a Wild Card spot
As a rental, you think he’d block Lenny? You expecting Lenny to jump right into the top 6?

And the reporting is saying that VAN might not want to re-sign him, so they might trade him (even if they can squeak in as a WC) to avoid losing him for nothing.

I also think that having no real threat in the bumper spot is stalling the PP - particularly Ovi. TJ was so good at drawing defenders.

Caps, along with NJD, and CBJ are among teams rumored.

I said he might. I'm not opposed, depending on the price, but those are the concerns as I see them.

Id like Boeser as a signing. There will be less pressure for Leonard to make an immediate impact in the top 6 aswell. Also makes it possible to roll 3 scoring lines and try different combinations with Ovi, Strome, Protas, PLD, McM, Wilson, Boeser and Leonard in 8 of the top 9 spots.

You could for example do a xx-Protas/McM-Boeser third line which should be a problem for other teams to defend against as you also have two other strong lines to match up against. Kinda like with the Penguins where other teams had to put their best players against the Crosby and Malkin lines and got punished by the Kessel line.

If the Canucks really are blowing everything up who they should really be after is Q. Hughes ...
Obviously, you sell the farm for him if he's willing to extend. He'll be eligible for an extension starting on July 1, 2026. But I have to think he's going to end up in New Jersey.

I really think Caps need to look at who could bring at the most out of Strome when he no longer’s tied to Ovechkin. He has 3 5vs5-points in his last 26 games.
I’m going to keep pushing for Marner because I think his characteristics is a great fit for Strome.

Pro-Strome-Marner
CMM-Dubois-Wilson

That is a really skilled, balanced and young core that could lead the next wave post-Ovie but the key will be to get Strome to keep over-performing his contract.

Sprinkle that with Leonard, Miro, Lapierre, Cristall, Lil-Pro, Parascek.

LeBrun says Caps looking for "top nine winger," whether 2nd or 3rd line player depends on market.
I will add Nelson and Marchand are 2 obvious 2nd line players, who knows maybe Tuch for Ridley
