If Dowd gets $3M and Chychrun $8.5M this lineup would have $10M in cap room ($92,5M cap), from that context you've got to pay your 22-2-3 goaile

Mangiapane is scoring at pretty much the exact same rate as Zegras over the last two years while putting up defensive numbers that are in a different stratosphere and getting worse deployments.
That would sound harsh but I'll say it as it is: first of all - that's just me - I don't give a shit about anyone's defensive metrics if the guy is making almost 6 a year, is supposedly a solid top-9 forward that can fill in anywhere up the lineup and in fact is just a 4th liner with some wheels out there. The only thing that would save him is if his game was mainly based on skill, playing on the puck and generating offense even if not scoring and then there would be a potential for improvement. There's no potential with Mangiapane, he's who he is and also he is not scoring at the same rate as Zegras this season which matters most, especially when you consider the fact that Zegras' PPG pace is actually terrible by his standards. If Anaheim is fine with 2nd rounder and a B-/C+ prospect or just a couple of 2ns/3rds as a sweetener, I'm going for that deal. Normal Mangiapane is easily replaceable, normal Zegras is not.

If, as some suggest, the market is thin and BM/GMCP indeed do not want to move out any "good prospects with potential" (to keep from over -valuing on here...) ...I'm going back to an idea I've been posting for years on here, now that we are talking Ducks....

6'5" 220 forward, a $1M RFA, with the same number of goals as Zegras and a point more overall... and a proven high level of chemistry with... Alexeyev Protas.

So maybe our adds are Ryan Leonard AND Brett Leason. Maybe we can get Leason cheap.
LOL. You love your Leason

Meaning? (The bolded). Not arguing, just looking for your stance. I think you are accurate
What part? About aiming higher? Just someone more established. The age fits I guess but in terms of this post-season in particular I think they'd want a more proven commodity. Big picture it could work I guess, although further out you'd think Cristall ticks very similar boxes.

The fact is that you can't get quality goaltending for this price every season. This is a great deal from what we've seen and is right on par with comparable deals of late. He absolutely could have held out for more money but we got him under $6 for a bit more term.

Where you might have some flexibility is around the 1B/backup. I don't think you want LT playing more than around 60 games in any scenario. Do you pay Lindgren for 20-25 starts? Do you sign a guy like Vladar or the like if you can get them for less? Do you chance it with Shepard/Stevenson and address is later next season if needed? Lots of options.

I guess that link didn't work but Oates got pissed we traded for another center and wanted out.
Well Oatsie was a known prick, and always kinda aloof here…not sure that destroyed the room (Wilson benching him was the beef), but again, nothing in the Ovechkin years.

Nothing really convincing me this room is falling apart if Mango or even CMM were traded in a big acquisition. That said, Caps usually save those moves for the offseason.

I an still thinking he has good upside. Protas loved playing with him, and they really clicked in their last year in PA. And he's big and we can always improve almost anyone's skating.

Recall we took him 2nd before we took Protas- and GMBM said they were probably going to take him 1st until CMM dropped.

We only lost him because we tried to sneak him through waivers after camp because of the overal mix and lost that bet. We wanted him to cook in Hershey, we didn't overtly give up on him.

He is a known quantity, just saying they MIGHT see him as another potential reclamation success, especiallyif they think he is a better fit here than in ANA...

The silent message that would hit the room with CMM is they are willing to give up on someone who is having their best year, albeit with a mid season slump. He has been with this group and Carbs going back to Hershey. It would be quite an undercurrent of 'could be any of us next'. Subtle shit matters. So the upgrade would have to be that much bigger to offset it.

Mango moving would be less of an issue as he does t have the history.

Trading picks only for a rental is the way to sidestep that - especially if the new guy is a fit.

If BM and Company decided it was time to move on from CMM, the room would probably already feel/suspect deep inside that he wasn’t part of the long term answer. I’d trust them on that one.

I’d like to give him another playoff run to see if like @Langway suggested, he struggles when things get more contested.

I hope Ovi doesn’t have to be the guy again. They need another viable scoring option next year that can be consistent.

Leason is 25, has scored at a 20 point per season pace his entire career, and has put up some of the worst play-driving numbers in the league. He's not the answer at all.

The easy answer is to move the 1st + Bear + whatever other smaller piece you want for Boeser or Nelson 50% retained. If there's a fit and you re-sign them next year, great! If not, no issue with a rental for a playoff run.
