Speculation: Caps Roster General Discussion (Coaching/FAs/Cap/Lines/etc) | 2024-25 Summer Edition

do you think Ovi (shooter) - Strome (shooter) - Boeser (shooter) would work, or do you want to split the amazing Protas-Dubois-Wilson line?

I actually think this team have enough players that can put the puck in the net. I think they need a creator, someone that can enter the OZ on the power play, someone that can draw attention away from Ovi and Strome etc..
I think Strome isn't exactly a shooter on that line. He has a very good shot but his role isn't that. He has to figure out how to find them in open spots, that's a top-6 center's job.

Kinda. But OV is getting his goals with Strome as his center so not really wanting to change that up. Strome ability to score also opens up OV because they have to collapse on Strome when in crease. If it really goes cold I would like to see PLD as OV’s center. Just haven’t needed it much this year.

I’d like them to be a little more proactive. Is there a winger with term on a struggling team that can put the puck in the net? You can never have enough goal scorers.

I get not wanting to disrupt the locker room vibes, but adding someone with term would be better in that aspect than adding a pure rental.

Averaging in 82 games..... checks stats never has played 82 games in a year, has only scored 30 goals in a season 1.5 (I'll give him a .5 for his 29 goal season) times and only over 60 points once over his 8 seasons. Averages are fun.

So yea I'd pause on Boeser if he simply cost our 1st but I'd imagine they'd want more.
Doesn't matter if he hasn't played all 82, he's consistently played in 60+ games pretty much his every full season and he's had a long enough career thus far to make a judgment what you can expect from him. His production is very respectable for a late 1st.

It does matter if he doesn't play 82 games. He's not a 30g 65pt guy he's only ever hit those numbers once in his 8 year career.

He isn't just a 20 goal guy either. It's one thing if a guy scores 20 through 82 and another when he scores 20 through 60. You can expect that man to score as a 30 goal scorer in the playoffs, not as a 3rd liner nobody gives a shit about.

Basically you're trying to say he's the same as the likes of Mangiapane or Donato or someone like that. Boeser is a top-6 player, simple as that. If you don't agree. that's fine, moving on.

He has shown for 8 years he can't play 82 games in a season. It doesn't matter if a player scores 20 in 60 if he doesn't play those 22 other games.20 in 60 and 20 in 82 are still 20 goals.

It does matter to me though. He didn't have any major injuries through the course of his career so I personally expect him to play 10-12 games more at some point and deliver his full season averages. He passes the eye test, he has top-line player traits and that's all that matters. You can try and go for an 82-game specialist and spend a 1st on him but if he sucks - you're going to have to watch him suck every game, his durability isn't going to worth a dog's fart.

I also don’t really want a guy who has played their entire long career with another team (and in particular a division rival). Those guys almost never make the intended impact.

Careful, sounds exactly like you're describing Mitch Marner...
I’m going to keep beating that drum! It doesn’t have to be him though, I’d obviously prefer someone who won’t cost 13M next season. But there’s not so many out there that fits the mold. I guess it could be someone like Ehlers as well, but I really like the idea of the power play having a right shooting playmaker for the first time in a gazillion years.

I don’t think it makes sense to bring in a $10M contract until OV is gone. We can win a cup without that.
It may depend on what the team decides with Chychrun. With him re-signed (I'll assume around 8 mil) and assuming Chuckie is re-signed around 3mil, there won't be a ton of room (6ish-7ish depending on what they do with 3C, 4C, and 4RW). However, if the Caps don't re-sign Chychrun, they could easily fold in a 10+m player. Caps have a great salary cap window particularly in 25-26 with McMichael signed at 2.1, Protas signed at 3.3, and Strome signed at 5.0. The best part is that Strome/Protas are both signed for several more years.

Add in all high quality prospects who will be playing on entry-level contracts the next few years, and the Caps have reason to be aggressive.

I’m starting to wonder if they do extend Cych given the assumed price tag.

I probably would play him with PLD to start but it's also not unheard of for 3 shooters to work together, sometimes matching strengths actually is the way to go. Nashville has finally been able to get some success out of Stamkos and Marchessault by putting them together with Forsberg for example

this is here or there and may not be the right thread but was just on FB and the algorithm for whatever reason showed me a vegas Knights post about Sammys big 21 save performance a few nights ago. The comments were priceless. "This young guy could be the guy if he just cleans up those occasional back breaking goals". There were at least 5-6 comments saying the same thing in different ways. I dont post on FB but would have said Welcome to understanding what Sammy is. He will make amazing saves and give you hope and then totally piss the game away with a floater from the parking lot. Hasnt changed at all

Sammie casually giving up the puck on the 3rd goal that game, which really was the Sammie experience minus catching covid

I know people are often critical of analytics, but I recall seeing a chart from a few years ago that Sammy was solidly above average in terms of making hard / medium saves, but he was way below average in terms of making the 'easy' saves. Which, if you've ever watched him play, is dead on.

I'm not sure if he loses focus or what, but that's been a very consistent part of his game for a long time.

It’s funny how everyone gets so nervous about if Leonard will sign with us. Chychrun same. People worried about Thompson before he signed. I kinda get it because we don’t have a lot of info since negotiations are usually kept close to the vest.

This i am very confident of. Those players want to be here and i believe the Caps want them all here. These are big boy negotiations that take some time. And both sides have some leverage so it takes time. I think we get deals done for all of them.

Probably the biggest question mark for me is Ryan Chesley. He has had a great season and there is a path in Washington. If he wants to go pro this is probably the year. I feel like there is still selling to be done here.
