Not sure where I stand with Dowd re-signing mainly due to his age, but I don't think Beagle is a good comparison. Dowd is a much better player than Beagle was, and has allowed the team to basically plug and play bargain bin wingers on the 4th line: Hagelin, Hathaway, Malenstyn, NAK, Duhaime, Raddysh, and others have all fit in well. It might be worth it to pay Dowd in that $2-3 million range and then get league minimum wingers for the 4th line.
I agree that they should prob resign Dowd. He IS the 4th line

I disagree that Beagle wasn’t close to Dowd. Beagle was awesome. I loved him!

I wasn’t comparing them as players, just the contract situations.

As in if someone offers a crazy contract for Dowd, we will all be happy for him on a personal level but in no way do we want the Caps to match.

Dowd is pacing for a career year. 25 goals.

Obviously we want to re-sign him but if someone offers him like 3x3m, it's probably a bad idea to match.

Just like with Jay Beagle, thanks for the years of hockey and happy you got that money, but bye.

What do you guys think it will take to get him signed?
Is $3 mil per too much for a defacto 3C/shutdown C? He’s 6th in ice time per game among forwards.

Better question, who is taking that heavy responsibility if he’s gone?

Beagle was good for some years, but not for as long as Dowd. Also 3*3 inst the same noe as it was when Beagle signed

Dowd will be 35 when the season is over. I wouldn’t go over a two year deal for him
I love Dowd and want to re-sign him but it'll depend heavily on what he's looking for. 2 years x 2m AAV? I would run, not walk, to sign that contract.

More years or significantly higher AAV? Then it becomes less certain.

Biggest question re: Dowd is durability at this point
34 now, and he's never played more than 65gms as a Cap in his 6+ seasons here; seemed like he wasn't too effective down the stretch last year with a Feb? injury

I'd think he's got 2 more good/effective years left but his body's been through a lot of battles

3m per year on a one or two year is acceptable to me.

3m per year on a 3+ year deal and I let him walk.

I’d do 3x3. If that’s what it took. Who knows where we will be year 3. Could be good to great, could be truly rebuilding. So much can happen, as they have a LOT of cap space flexibility down the line.

He’s only making 1.3m now. So 3m seems awfully steep. I’d wager a 3yr x 2.25-2.5m deal would get it done.

Beagle walked at basically the same age, and was washed from the minute he left Kettler.

I think it's just best to accept a 35 year old on term is always a bad idea. Dowd could be replaced in the aggregate, imo. And we've got two younger guys waiting for their shot behind him.

Even a 3x3 I kind of think you take and maybe understand that the third year might be spent on LTIR anyways.

He's a better player than Beagle was and so much more important to how the team is set up. I still don't think there's an internal replacement so I kind of feel like you have to pay up. That being said, he's been here a while (seven years!) and is older, you'd like to think he would prioritize staying too.

He's been underpaid his entire career so I wouldn't be sure he won't seek market value. His career earnings are $8.1M total. If he can double that or more in his next contract then it has to be awfully appealing.

Timing is a lot different. We need Dowd for OV last year and you give him a transition year. I think 3Mx2 works for both sides. Dowd doesn’t want to move and he wants to be part of this team. Caps want him to stay. I would do 2.25 (maybe 2.5M) x 3 if we had to. It also depends on hw the org feels about Rybinski as 4C. We can wait two years. 3 years will be tough.

VADCMD metro area is really a killer area. Top 5 schools in the nation and real estate that is basically immune to other downturns in the states. At this point moderate weather. Seeing Green and Holtby move back into the area says something.
Context I say this strictly from a view of a professional NHL player whose minimum salary is at least 6 times what I make personally. For me in my mid 50s no way to really retire in NOVA nor do I even really have a desire to at this point regardless. Probably a more a topic in the OT thread of where to start looking at retiring to.

Don’t move to Bay Area California 🤦🏻‍♂️

The big unknown with the Dowd extension, and really any risky extension, is whether Patrick will be as adept at unloading bad contracts as GMBM was.

It got to the point with MacLellan where I didn't really care what kind of term they handed out because I figured he could ditch it somehow. Patrick doesn't have that track record yet.

Very good point.

Thankfully — Mac is STILL in the building 😀🤩

It was always pretty recession-proof. The incoming admin, tho, is promising cuts that could trigger a very DMV-focused downturn. Still TBD, but…
