I agree with you on the top six, but Leonard is a way better prospect than Mcgroarty is. He skates much better, and has out produced him pretty substantially when they were at similar levels. He also plays a much more complete game than Mcgroarty. I think they try him on the 3rd line if/when he turns pro at the end of the year, and may or may not be a healthy scratch in the playoffs. I worry about him getting blown up at this level, because it happens too much in college. So I wouldn't be disappointed if he spent time in the AHL, I just think the team is gonna give him a lot of rope before it sends him down. Part of Mcgroarty's problem in Pitt, is their head coach treats young guys like Laviolette did.
I don't disagree and I think Leonard is a superior prospect to RM but it's also rare for a guy, unless they're physically there, to jump right in from the NCAA level and contribute. I think Knies is a great example of what COULD happen but Knies is about 6'3" 230lbs. Leonard is barely 6' and under 200 lbs. The way Leonard plays the game might not translate immediately against bigger and stronger players. There's a few guys on every AHL team who have a "pro shot" that spend their entire careers in the AHL. Some time in the AHL to adjust to playing the pro men's game will probably do Leonard good.

I think we all agree there are valuable things to be learned in the AHL…but that’s not his path. I hope he’s good enough he never sniffs Hershey.

He’s got plenty of size for the NHL today. Probably needs to work on self-awareness at the next level so he doesn’t get blown up. Everything else looks elite to me.

Guess who? (Playoffs numbers)

Player A:
57 games
11 goals
50 points (31 ESP, 17 PPP, 2 SHP)

Player B:
81 games
34 goals
101 points (63 ESP, 38 PPP, 0 SHP)

Woof.

Pretty sure A is Marner.

B is Rantanen?

Rants might be the only one worth doing something crazy to acquire and pay. Basically give him Ovi’s salary+ (assuming he retires after next year) and the Caps would have their next top line goal scorer.

Anyways, I doubt he’ll be available or reach FA. I imagine the Avs will work out a deal ~ 12M/year.

Let’s hope Leonard becomes that top line, 30+ goal guy.

Worth clarifying that that 3 year contract Weekes referenced hasn't even started yet. Hoglander's AAV this season is $1.1M.

Interesting, 24 yrs old, scored 24 last year, looks to have had some ups a downs production-wise, and has started slow so far this season.

Which young guy are we giving up to get him?

Why would they trade him? Is he total dog poop this year? Canucks are A WIN NOW TEAM.

I’d wager they’d want a lot for a young 3m a yr player — locked in for 3yrs — that’s scored 20 goals already.

He takes the Vrana spot as 3LW, right? So Vrana would need to leave. Which is fine. Not worried about that piece - am just looking at an overfilled roster.

Or do they send Mangiapane over, to get a cost controller winger for the next 3yrs?

I dunno

Looks like he’s taking a lot of heat from Vancouver fans….performance related.

Nucks fans seem to think their need is a RD. TvR was a name thrown out on the main boards. I'd be surprised if he's enough for the Caps to get Hog. The idea thrown around with the Pens is Petterson with 50% retention. I think that's probably a better value than TvR.

Related: I'm not sure if want the Caps to pay the cost to acquire him. I'm not sure he's enough of a needle mover this team to justify right now. Other teams 'need' him more, so may pay more to get him.

After the Eller trade the Caps are at 48 out of 50 contracts. Vancouver is at 47 with minimal cap space. They actually can't afford TvRs contract, even after subtracting Hoglander. We would probably have to eat some money or a contract, which would subsequently mean we'd need to send a contract or two back to Vancouver, Hershey guys.

All that to say, it's complicated.

But maybe it's the Old Fashioned talking.

I'd find a spot for him if the price is right but I'm not sure I want to give up TVR for him. The Capitals are in a great position where they have 3 reliable pairs who can play tough minutes while most teams have to shelter their third pair.

I'd do Mangiapane+ for him I guess since I don't see Mangiapane as more than a rental so far. Not sure Vancouver would want that deal though. Seems like a tough fit from a trade value perspective.
