Did he have a team physical previously?
You'd have to think so to be cleared, practicing, scrimmaging, etc. Good news I guess is it's not the same back injury but...:help:

Geez. Mid-December potentially for Pacioretty? Looking more and more like Carbery & Co. are stuck trying to put new paint on a foundationally suspect house. I wonder just how quickly they'll pivot to a basic meat and potatoes style.

Also seems increasingly clear they missed the bell not moving any future seconds to dump Mantha during the buyout window. That may have been their only chance to make more significant changes to the roster. Instead it's looking like they'll be relying on that slacker.

At the very least IMO if they struggle the spotlight should not be on this coaching staff.

OTOH if you commit to a new coach/style and some guys can't keep up it gives you cover to move those guys out.

We will win the Florence Nightingale Memorial for most injured players.

On a serious note, time for some lineup speculation. Or, what i would want to see:

Ovi-Strome-Wilson
Kuzy-CMM-Mantha/Oshie (Patches when/if healthy)
Protas/Oshie-Bäckström-Milano
Malenstyn/Protas-Dowd-NAK

Fever-JC74
Sandin-Jensen
AA-TvR

McilRath
Snively

Kuemper
Gibson

It's actually possible that if all players deliver on their capacity and stay healthy that this is a playoff team.

Do they need cover? Or are they just toxic assets with no market? I doubt ownership has restricted movement or else MacLellan should have been a bit more guarded about his current intentions. There just seems to be zero market for assets that have tanked and come with considerable baggage (at least not at current valuations).

Maybe if they stink they become open to the idea of simply moving on and doing whatever it takes for it to happen (including retention). But even that's just the first step in what may be a prolonged process in acquiring some legit headliners. They'll restructure eventually but time is ticking and every sliver of opportunity toward refreshing further seems like a mistake.

Cover is better than no cover when moving fan favorites, especially with guys like Kuzy willing to air it out in the media.

You mean getting older injury prone players like Edmundson and Pacioretty is a bad idea when you already have an old team that missed a bunch of man games last year?

Two weeks before the regular season begins and people are already.....what? Worrying about injuries and the strength of the roster because it might - gulp - affect our chances of making the playoffs?

Psst, have I got a deal for you - there's this bridge, in Brooklyn....

Just saying track record is what it is. 2 big strike outs
That one can't genuinely count. It was a fluke season ending injury with no real history. If you count that against the GM you have to count it against his crystal ball too, and nobody has one, so...

that was always expected for anyone who understood how he came back from his first one too early.

I thought this was very, very obvious to anyone but I guess it's not: Pacioretty is a bonus laden contract for a reason, and Achilles repair has never been simple. They're going to rehab him until they're virtually positive there's no chance of re-injury or he's going to have to admit his career is over and he's lucky to walk. If he comes back and manages it's just a race to the deadline, but nobody should have ever expected him to be a real top 6 option for any amount of time.

This is more like "when Oshie is hurt in December, maybe it's time for Max". Or, if everyone's miraculously going, it's contender-quality depth, but we all know it won't be that. He's an extra part. GMBM is not looking at that contract like "hope it pays off because we really need him". It's a dice roll with some high reward and potential asset value depending on how it all shakes out.

I am going into this season with no expectations - which should make it one of the more enjoyable seasons to watch since they won the Cup.

Having said there, there are plenty of interesting storylines this season:

Is Kuzy better with Carberry coaching him? (this is essentially a coin toss)

Will Mantha have a better season (I'm sure Lavi weighed heavily on his performance or lack thereof).

How good / bad will Backstrom be?

What will a full season of Rasmus Sandin look like?

Can any of Protas, McMichael, Alexeyev have a meaningful impact and secure a roster spot?

Do we see a better season from Fehervary or has he reached his full potential?

What does the PP look like without Blaine around?

Look I can’t stand Mantha but he will probably have a good year because he’s a ufa at the end of the year. Plus if he plays well we can get a better return for him at the deadline. Btw that first line of ovy-backy-mantha will not work. Nobody on that line will hustle for the puck. I’m sure the lines will change a lot.

I wouldn't read anything into the lines. If I'm Carbery I want to see what the historical matchups look like with my own eyes (like Ovi-Nick-XXX) etc. to get perspective. Then I adjust after that.

They were trade assets to move at the deadline as I originally viewed it

It still makes no idea why they would give up salary cap and assets for two people who are probably hurt not gonna play much and our only hope is to trade them

Lol I should dig up all my post from the end of last season and through the summer where everyone yelled at me when I said we were running it back again because nobody wants our trash. GMBM is a straight shooter and the top 6 would look significantly different next year they said. lolol

Didn't really want Edmundson to see much ice but was hoping we'd be able to flip him for a better asset than we paid at the deadline. Things looking bleak on that front probably if he's hurt already and looking to miss games. Just give Vinny his number back and go away.

It seems like it's because they whiffed on plan A, which likely included a trade they couldn't get together. Decided to make a run on positive assets, which I can't blame
