So I guess we see Shepherd starting tomorrow. He's probably already on the way to DC. He was the backup tonight for the Bears win so he should be fresh.
With the Caps he's already 2-0 w/ a .915 SV%. I think Shep is ready to challenge for the backup role, as he has already accomplished everything he needed to at the AHL level. When you win the AHL Championship as the MVP, and your the goalie, then it's time to move up. That onus is on Scott Murray not doing his job right to tell the coaches, Shep is ready!

I love Shep, I really do...we love him in Hershey. I just don't see him as an everyday NHL guy. Stylistically I can't picture it. Maybe he's the next tim thomas and I'm wrong... Clay Stevenson on the other hand plays a pro style in net. He's got the juice. He'll be in the NHL one day.

or — they keep looking at being in the playoffs, and react accordingly.

Mantha won’t get a 1st. Patches wont get much either.

I’d look at Keumper, for sure. But only for a good return. No “selling” just because.
I think you are right. They look good and we should stay the course.

These last 2 road games not withstanding.

I simply think it’s good to wait somewhat. Let Carberry continue to do his thing, work in the youth (and new players, Pacioretty and Bear), and see where you are. There is a LOT of time left before the TDL.

However, if they are in the same boat in mid Feb, as they were last year, then they should 100% sell. Including Mantha, and anyone else that allows them to get more futures assets and younger.

I fully believe GMBM will do what is right for the franchise, assuming OTL (owner Ted Leonisis) allows him too.

Shep can be an NHL backup and maybe with some hard work be a platoon goalie. I can already tell he has better goalie IQ than Vanecek/Sammy(1st NHL game he was nervous winning 6-4 against the Devils, but next start he beat the Isles 4-1 stopping 36/37). Stevenson is only a rookie in the AHL and he's leading in Shutouts, SV% and GAA. He would be leading in wins, but Shep has gone 14-2(Stevenson is 11-4). Stevenson is the Caps next #1 in the footsteps of Beaupre, Kolzig and Holtby. Thank goodness when he was an undrafted free agent, he had narrowed his choice to the Caps/Rangers. Long term #1 was open here, while he would have had to challenge Shesterkin with the Rangers. He made a very good choice.

Everybody who's angry with Darcy should check out how Leafs fans are feeling about Sammy. Throw Ilya Samsonov into a twitter search and enjoy.
I really feel bad for Sammy. Caps rushed him too early to the NHL, and now he's a complete mess. He only developed half a season in the AHL learning the North American style. He should have cooked longer in the AHL and it would have made a huge difference in his development. He had a very good 1st season with the Leafs, but teams scout every goalie and learn their tendencies/weaknesses. Sammy has not adjusted as his mental part of the game has collapsed. It doesn't help at all he plays for the Hockey Mecca Leafs and has no Russian teammates to consult with/lean on. If he's to get back on track I think he needs to go to another team that has Russian's on the roster(that are not like Kuzy!). I really hope he can make it with another team as he will be a free agent by seasons end. I just have this sort of feeling he might just go back to the KHL and that will be the end of his NHL career.

That is the big issue for BMac. He has to deal with ego eccentric Ted and big Dick Patrick! If BMac were GM of half the other NHL teams, Kuzy, Mantha, Backstrom, Oshie, and Holtby(going further back) would have been out the door a lot sooner! Ted is so fortunate he's had OV, because all the other sports teams he's owned have turned to garbage!

So how many times has Chucky been sidelined in his NHL career now?

Seems he can't go 5 starts without getting dinged up somehow (I appreciate that this one is from puck impact vs. a movement injury)

If (at some point) Chucky's gonna be the #1 he's gotta handle the 50+ starts that go with it; I'd love for him to be the guy, but I'd also love for him to handle a longer string of starts/regular play and stay healthy

If there is one weakness of Lindgren, it would be his durability and that is partial to why he won't be a #1 goalie. Platoon at best(41 games max). He plays a very aggressive style that can lead to being nicked up. I would be up for trading Kuemper, all bite he improves his play, and have Lindgren/Shepard as the #1 and #2. It would allow Stevenson and Gibson to be the #1 and #2 with Hershey. I hope we are not going down the same Holtby/Grubauer path with Kuemper/Lindgren as that was the fault of Scott Murray's decision making. If we trade Lindgren, then we are trading the wrong goalie again!

Kuznetsov responded to his healthy scratch with a goal the next game and assist the game after. Since then he has missed 1 game with illness and 9 games pointless streak. Can we bench him again for short-term results?

On pace for 13 + 16 = 29 in 78 games. That stat line might not even get him league minimum contract for next season when we buy him out.

That was a sick game to be at, that place exploded on ovis second goal that was called back. Also a huge ovation for Shepard on that save, way more fun than football games even when we lose

I am baffled on what has happened to him.

I feel like Kuznetsov did a solid job of holding onto the puck for a long time then losing it last night, and recently.

Seeing #92 for the Caps skate around holding onto the puck and doing nothing with it....Nylander flashbacks, man.
And his passing is just completely off the mark. He used to be dynamite throwing cross rink no look passes. There were times I questioned if he was a better than Nicky as a setup man. Now...he throws the puck to vacant point positions on a regular basis. I don't know what's happened to him but it's sad. He was one of my all time favorites.

Moneypuck losing faith in us.

Cup odds down to 0.1%. Our odds for 1st overall pick have rocketed up to 4% though.

I don’t think he gives a shit at all. I predict he will be out of the league shortly after his current contract expires, and he’ll probably go back to the KHL.
Sadly I think you are right. What happened to the Kuzy bird celey? The twister pass? All the creativity?

I also wonder if when he didn’t have to be the guy, and could be a middle 6 dude who could show up now and then, if he was happy then. Once he was expected to be 1C and be the teams top playmaker, if he isnt happy with that role.

He lost some of his explosive speed, which was his biggest asset. Propably gave up afterwards, knowing he'd get paid anyways and fans already disliked him because of his defensive game. Trait like vision or offensive creativity shouldn't disappear with age but surely even that takes a hit if your head isn't in the game.

I just think he BELIEVES he gives a shit but doesn't really understand what that means to other people.

IOW his "try hard" is like 3 levels below top talent and generally defined by risky trick plays.

I’m sorry, but blaming the fans even indirectly for his career arc is absurd….

It’s 100% mental with this guy. But hey at least we got two good regular seasons from that terrible contract, and one postseason of a lifetime. He’ll always have that and I am thankful for that at least.
