funny….I recall a few victory laps by posters roasting GMBM for letting those guys go…
Well, in fairness, Vanacek and Samsonov both had pretty decent seasons after leaving the Caps.

For Vanacek I think he had a very good Devils defense in front of him which helped (to make him look better than he actually is).

Samsonov - relief at being away from Ovie, who I think he was terrified of, lol. But we all knew Sammy was going to show his true colors and sure enough when the playoffs rolled around he did!

I think Kuzy a bit like Carlson (but not to same extent). He is good. Has shortomcings. We will miss what he brings when not here. Gotta ride him this year.

The premise for the last year or so has been replacing Kuzy with another legit top 6er in a "hockey trade".

That ship seems to have sailed. Nobody is taking on Kuzy and surrendering a better or even identical chip.

The return is going to be either another headcase or something other than a top 6 player.

If you're not waiting for the right offer in a bidding war involving top 6ers then there's no point in waiting for "value" any longer. The value decreases with every game, as it did last night.

Regarding the Caps still being the 2nd worst scoring team in the league, do you think Carbs and the coaching staff are having the D pairs defend to much? Lavi was too aggressive having the D activate to create offense, which left the goalies out to dry more. Carb's has the D holding back more, which dilutes the Caps offensive attack. Maybe a compromise needs to be made to allow the Caps offense to flourish more, overall?

I think it’s a combination of bad luck and watered down talent. Who is an elite offensive talent on this team? Any gamebreakers on this roster at all? Are there any 30-goal scorers?

Ovi is still a threat but the dude is 38 and needs some help. They just don’t have the high end offensive talent we’re used to having. Gone are the days of having a top six with multiple elite players.

Agreed. I think as long as they are in the playoff race, the way that they are setup right now probably gives them the best bang for their buck. Also, they are kind of a mid-table defensive team, so it's not as if there is a lot of leeway in that department.

If they fall out of the playoff race, I don't think it will matter diddly squat what Carbery wants. It will be every man for himself, much like it was last season.

Better to retain 50 % in a trade than drag 2 mill an extra year. I can see team wanting him as a rental at 50 %. Not like Caps really need the capspace immedeately with Backstrom on LTIR.

We have 14 mill in estimated cap space next year and thats before Backstrom which makes it 23,2 million. Then the question is will Oshie play next year or will he also go on LTIR with his health issues.

On defence we have 5 defenders signed and Sandin are gonna be the most expensive signing there. Wonder what they decide to do with Johansen and Edmundson. I guess they will let Johansen walk now.

On offence you have Mantha, McMichael, Protas, Malentyn, NAK and Phillips.

So no really expensive signings most likely. Mantha if he want to stay would have to continue his recent play and take a pay cut. Interesting with Malentyn and NAK as they have made a very good 4th line with Dowd, but you have guys pushing for spots in the lineup if they demand to much.

That's calculations assuming he's bought out next summer. He's not rental yet, so i assume you mean a summer trade.

I mean, sure, it'd be better. Then again, this situation has turned ugly already, november just ended and the team is (still atleast) good and picking up points.

I wish i could have your optimism about where this situation will end with him but i'd wager it's only heading downhill from here. Last season he started well and actually had 50 points in his first 61 games before the entire team collapsed and he completely mailed it in. He scored 1 goal and 5 points in the last 20 games. He seems to have already mailed it in this season. At this stage. While we are actually good.

I'd be beyond shocked if he had any value left even at 50% in the summer. Especially given that he has trade protection in his contract.

My prediction is, bold or not, that GMBM wanted to showcase him early. That failed. We'll see if he finds his motivation and improves (doubtful). At some point does GMBM send him down to see if riding the bus at the AHL can find his motivation? It doesn't even matter if he doesn't, for a guy like him that just wants to enjoy his hockey perhaps that pushes him to return to KHL in the summer.

The right move. I guess they will give him one more shot after this benching before pulling the plug for good. I doubt the benching is going to make him revert to his good form, but I suppose they need to give him a shot.

I look at it like the child who is never told no or punished in any meaningful way. You can scold and threaten and if the things they value are never taken away the behavior never changes.

If Kuzy is the same after being benched you know he just doesn't give a f*** and can be safely removed at any price.

So I guess they were trying the carrot to star the season, give him everything and hope he responds, now they're moving to the stick.

I'd love to see Kuzya respond but I think his days as a top player are long past. Shame, he was my favorite, but it just doesn't seem like he has the self motivation necessary to be a top end NHL player.

Carbery is great.

Carbery putting his money where his mouth is. Nice.

Maybe it gives Kuznetsov a boost. Maybe it will motivate Ted to bust out the ol' buyout wallet this summer.

I'm a little concerned that Strome (1 point in 5 games), McMichael (2 points in 5 games), Dowd (1 point in 5 games) might get a bit exposed. Still, Kuznetsov healthy scratch had to be done. Can't have that type of defensive performance, period.
