Agree. The player is fine for what he is. But that contract is untenable.
Devil's advocate (and not sure if LA would do this) - what about at 50% retained? I agree with the hard no on taking his full contract, but it might be tempting at half price (4.25 but all the way to 30-31).

Were almost paying kuzy that much to do simular to what PLD is on another team. Pass.

As long as the finals end before June 24, the Kings can buy him out at 1/3 of his remaining salary, spread out over a longer period of years. That's a better course for them unless a player with real value were coming their way in a trade/retention scenario.

Yeah, I saw all the talk about buyout and thought it was insane but it's honestly not that bad. Below is if they get it done before the 24th. I mean, it's not ideal but if they want him gone a buyout makes more sense. No way they're retaining 50% on that contract that long.

How about this:

Kings send PLD, 2026 1st and Adrian Kempe.

Washington send Tom Wilson, 2026 2nd and Connor McMichael.

I mean they probably wouldn't but i would. Wilsons cap hit is similar and he wont be himself in 3-4 years anyways.

PLD is a cancer. I want no part of him.

If he was down to move to wing full-time I'd be more open, but not as-is. @CapitalsCupReality hit the nail on the head with the Canadian Kuzy comparison.

Kings aren't trading Kempe. They may be "we took mushrooms and chained ourselves to PLD for 8 years" dumb. But they're not "let's trade our trade our top scorer who has not yet peaked as a player and has one of the best combos of speed and skill" in the NHL dumb.

I remember a few years ago really wanting Kempe before he broke out. Saw him play a few times and came away thinking if he put it all together he was going to be a 40+ goal guy. He’s like Ehlers on steroids.

Meanwhile, an NHL source tells The Athletic that Nikolaj Ehlers is going to be shopped.
Sign me up. One more year left at $6M. Not altogether ideal and for the 17th pick maybe a bit rich for a team in their circumstances. But they could do worse. Not much of a playoff guy historically but someone that would add to their pace at least.

Sign me up for some Ehlers for sure. Dude has so much pace to his game

Im not sure I would move our 1st rounder #17 for Ehlers. Its not a great draft but I still think we need to be adding prospects depth.

I've been pining over Ehlers for a while, but this team needs a primary play driver at this point. I'm fine with adding Ehlers if they're going in, but he's not going to be the difference between the lottery and the playoffs for this team. A bigger add would be needed if they want to contend. If they're not going to get those other primary players, they absolutely should not be spending draft assets to bring in Ehlers.

I am sure to be in the minority here but I’m interested in what PLD could look like on the Caps. I get the sense the biggest thing he needs in his game is a coach who inspires confidence in him every single night, and that screams Carberry to me.

I think the prospect of the trade is also what comes with him? Do they add a first or even more picks to take him? Can we unload Darcy to LA in the return? Could we add Kaliyev to the deal - Kempe ain’t happening.

Regarding Ehlers pull the trigger, maybe an option of a 2nd and Jensen/TVR or next years 1st. I’ve been saying he’s a great fit for years. His knock is playoff performance, but so wasn’t Oshies. I’m not bothered. You are always a playoff underachiever until you aren’t.

If the Jets are trading Ehlers, I think it’d be for current roster players. Their current core needs a shake up after consistently underperforming in the playoffs, but they were the 4th best team in the regular season and the matching 8x8.5M extensions they gave to Schieffele and Hellebuyck haven’t even kicked in yet, so they’re definitely not rebuilding. I don’t think a deal centered on a mid-1st is what they’d be looking for. Their clear need is a two-way second line center but their cap space is gonna be limited, so maybe McMichael would interest them as a cheap option who might grow into that role?

The Jets could add the futures and use the freed up cap space to keep Monahan. Restructuring trades like that involving a player a year away from UFA are a really smart idea for contending teams to keep the coffers filled. Whether Washington should really be that aggressive is another question. Likely not. With perhaps an abundance of cap space if Oshie does decide to hang them up it may be better to be patient and extract max value for that cap space rather than treating it as a burning hole in their pocket. Easier said than done, mind you.

I'm not usually into less established buy-low targets these days but Perfetti could also be a fit from the Jets. He only got into one playoff game and is not that trusted all-around, though perhaps with Bowness retiring that changes.

Looking at Jets, something i circle a bit is if it makes some sense for both teams..

CMM for Cole Perfetti…?

i think CMM & Lapierre sort of battle for the same spot.. Jets are strong in the wings.. dunno.

Edit. Didnt read it through, both posts above and maybe looks like someone else could see it too.

I wouldnt dump CMM so fast. He made alot of progress in his 1st full NHL season. He was almost a 20 goal scorer and if he could figure out how to finish he can easily be a 30 goal player. We didnt develop him for all these years to trade him when the slow cooking is finished.
It depends heavily on who you are getting back.

The problem with a CMM+ for Ehlers swap is that the Caps would be getting much older in that deal. (CMM is 23 and Ehlers is 28). I would be open to swapping CMM for a player like Cole Perfetti, however, as Perfetti just 22.
