Where we at with AA? Should be in top 6?

By the eye test, he looks better than 6, 25 and 57.

GAR says he's been the best D on the team on a rate basis. xGAR says he's only been better than Ethan Bear on a rate basis. He is a land of contrasts!

Unfortunately I think he needs to play more games for the numbers to actually have value.

Wow… watching posts for a couple of pages is 10 minutes I’ll never get back in my life.

bummed Alexyev didn’t get a jersey tonight but he looked really bad last game. At least we create some competition for spots.

They have to blow it up now right?

I'm not exaggerating when I say their entire core is playing at replacement level or below. Ovechkin, Kuznetsov, Oshie, Wilson, Carlson are all negative GAR players. And it's not like this has been a one-off year. The trend has been down for these players for a while.

It's impossible for me to see a retooling doing anything to prevent this trend from continuing. And since Ovechkin isn't scoring with the core in place what harm would it even do to The Chase if they did decide to blow it up? No fan is having fun with this.

Sell all of the rentals, of course. But sell Carlson and Wilson too. Sell Jensen and/or TVR. Sell Dowd and Lindgren. Time to get ready for the next era of Capitals hockey, and let Ovechkin continue the chase alongside some fresh new faces.

There isn't much to blow up, to be honest.

You have following categories:

Franchise players or otherwise untouchables:

Alex Ovechkin:
- Duh.

Tom Wilson:
- Like it or not, he's untouchable. It would make GMBM look absolutely ridiculous to trade him now after his previous comments and long-term contract.

Pending free agents:

Anthony Mantha:
- You might be able to get a pick here with retention. Sell high.

Max Pacioretty:
- Ask him what he wants, since he has NMC. If he wants a Cup, sell later and get a pick.

Aube-Kubel:
- Meh. Propably won't return much of anything.

Edmundson:
- Addition by subtraction. Sell for whatever you can get.

Players signed long-term

Dylan Strome:
- In over his head. Shouldn't go anywhere.

Aliaksei Protas:
- Keep.

Nic Dowd:
- I'd listen to offers. If Carlson goes might aswell sell him too.

John Carlson:
- This is the big one. If they sell him, it's basement for us. Make a decision.

Nick Jensen:
- I'd propably try to move him. Despite being okay lately this has been a really bad year for him and the risk for that trend to continue is huge.

Trevor van Riemsdyk:
- I'd listen but would propably like to keep him.

Martin Fehervary:
- Keep.

Pennies category:

Matthew Phillips:
- Meh.

Ethan Bear:
- Meh.

Alexander Alexeyev:
- Meh.

RFA's and young players:

Connor McMichael:
- Keep.

Beck Malenstyn:
- Keep.

Rasmus Sandin:
- Keep.

Rest of the core:

TJ Oshie:
- Let him decide what he wants to do. I doubt he'd return much anyways.

Evgeny Kuznetsov:
- Buy-out.

Darcy Kuemper:
- I'd move him now that there seems to be a market for goalies. Seems like a good time to get rid of that contract, if possible.

Charlie Lindgren:
- Keep, unless someone offers the moon.

As i said, there isn't much to sell.

The good stretch by Lindgren and the youngsters was short lived. We are a bottom five team.

No way Ovechkin is breaking this record in the next 18 months. What happens after that?

Also, there should be a plane from Hershey to Denver. Leave Jimi and whoever else might help, take Kuzy and Edmunson for starters.

Just listen to Carbery, this is the key point for them. They're failing. I would expect them to start unloading some guys with how this is going.

Though I doubt it'll be guys anyone wants. Carlson should honestly be unloaded, I'd move one of Jensen or TVR (prefer Jensen) and run Bear, TVR, and Iorio or someone on the right going forward. Edmundsun is def traded, but obviously hold onto Fehervary and Sandin. Pacs and Mantha should all be moved. Kuzya would probably have to be a buyout in the offseason unless you can get buy retaining like 2 million on him. Wilson isn't getting traded, Ovi obviously isn't. I don't see a world where they move Oshie, or he wants to go anywhere, or even anyone really wanting him. I'd probably look into trading Dowd, who might return a couple 2nds from a contending team.

As for netminders, I'd love for them to move Keumper but no one's taking that. Probably have to get through next year and then he can be unloaded to a team hitting the cap floor, as his pay is then lower then his cap hit. Lindgren is probably someone you hold onto, but I guess I can see a world where someone argues he'd possibly win them too many games with how he's playing this year.

Sell Mantha at 50%

then sell Dowd, Lindgren, and Jensen. All of those should have significant value especially Dowd and Lindgren who are signed cheap and fill critical roles. Jensen solely as an RHD option will be attractive

Buy out Kuznetsov first chance you get.

Sell Pacioretty if he wants to move, but wouldn’t shock me if he’s just looking for some stability for himself and his family as he gets back into it. He might just wanna stay and reassess in the offseason

Oshie, Carlson, Wilson are sticking around. for better or worse, they are the face of the team with Ovi. Marketing has to sell the weird butt taps they do in warm ups. That stuff matters to decision makers. Ultimately, they are still good for business even if they have fallen off.

Oh and Edmundson, sell his Playoff Experience for a 3rd round pick please.

We’re probably stuck with Kuemper too but it’s not that big of a deal if Stevenson really breaks out like we are hoping. Not like we will be against the cap anyway so whatever

I think you're right that Ted and his toadies think that, but man are they ever wrong IMO. Our "core" is old as f*** and expensive as hell and with the exception of the last few games from Osh, about 50% (generously) of Carlson and Wilson's games, they are massively underperforming their cap hits and lineup spots. And Ovie and Carlson's work rates are not something that should be modeled by the rest of the team, and Osh and Wilson work harder - but not necessarily very efficiently or consistently effectively.

At the very least, Carlson and Osh should be moved, while they still have some positive value.

I agree I’ve just resigned myself that those guys are sticking around through their contracts. Oshie has one year so doesn’t matter, Leonard should replace him nicely in 2025. Wilson is extended so he’s here for good. I could maybe see Carlson though!

Ive been thinking about this since I saw the asking price the Habs have on their trade block... 1st rounder for Sean Monahan a dumpster dive player that they got a 1st rounder to eat the salary.

With so many teams still in the race we might have some of the best trade chips on the market and could very well be selling high on some of these players. Mantha, Dowd, and Lindy could all have high value. We have Cap space to trade as well It would almost be reckless for GMBM to not sell at these values.

The flip side, you’re instantly gutting the team, losing season ticket holders at a much faster rate this coming renewal season, and making it harder to honor your commitment to Ovechkin.

I’d pull the trigger when it’s clear we will not make the playoffs, not before unless it’s an overpay.

That GMBM has NOT traded FOR anyone so far, leads me to believe the tank has been idling in the garage…just waiting to spring into action.

I’m convinced that the montreal front office is constantly juicing the value of their players with hockey insiders and create a market for their average if not crappy players.

It’s the only explanation for how they got a 1st for Chiarot, a 3rd for Edmundson, and now potentially TWO 1sts for Monahan??

I recall them also wanting a 1st for Edmundson, lol

But yes we need GMBM to float these names out there in the rumor mill! Create a market for them

What's the difference between this team and a gutted team? They score at the third worst rate in the league ahead of only Chicago and San Jose. They have the 7th worst goal differential. Their metrics are horrible. Ovechkin isn't scoring.

They basically are a bottom-feeder that has been bailed out by timely goaltending from Lindgren and an unsustainable record in 1-goal games.

They need to change direction now. This retool ain't it.

The season ticket holders wont care about Mantha, Dowd and a back up goalie LOL. I didnt name any player that sells Jerseys :)

You’re missing the point…sell off the only players playing well, and this team is a gutter team, waaaay worse of a product, so that’s going to gut them at renewal time which is right around the corner. Like it or not the business side matters. I don’t see them selling off early.

Take out all the guys playing well, then fill them in with with guys who wouldn’t be in an NHL lineup, that’s the difference. It goes from a painful team to watch at times to utterly unwatchable.

I think another sell off is coming, they don’t have the horses to compete unless they get lights out goaltending, just not until the deadline or if someone offers a deal you can’t refuse (unlikely but possible)…

If Ted cared about season ticket holders money he would not be moving the team to VA. We have another thread for that.
