2 years of Tom Wilson has to be worth a ton around the league among playoff hopefuls. I’m also not sure Washington signing a 30 year old Wilson makes much sense either, unless they’re just going for fan-service.
Idk about you but it's felt like that's been one of their main targets over recent years (kovalchuk, chara, bringing mojo back)

Adding Meier would be nice in theory but it’d come with a price, and I’m a bit skeptical of signing late 20s wingers to big deals when their best years are behind them. I think out of any position wingers are probably the easiest to get for relatively cheap on the market and the opportunity cost going after a guy like Meier is too much.

I’d much rather they target a young impact center or young #1 defenseman type, and it’s why I truly do think Wilson needs to be on the table in a trade. I’d target a guy like Quinton Byfield in LA or Luke Hughes/Simon Nemec in New Jersey. I think there’s a reasonable deal to be made especially with NJ when it comes to Nemec/Hughes. They are a true contender right now but many suggest they lack a true power forward. Would (at least) 2 kicks at the can with Wilson be enough for NJ to part with one of their stud D prospects? Their D corps is already one of the best in the league, with their top 3 signed for years to come.

I agree. If this team is making changes, it needs to be faster and much younger. No more reclamation projects or washed up NHL players.

Like @StrikingDistance said, his productivity is going to be capped playing with a boat anchor in Eller. He's done better than people realize and he's pretty under appreciated for what he brings.

Meaningful change won't come until the offseason. Bring McMichael into the 3C hole and see what you can do to get a Nic Ehlers, Timo Meier, etc to help out the top six. Let some of the plodders and grinders walk.

There is no way either of those players would ever come here voluntarily.

Don’t we have a lot of salary potentially coming off the books? Backstrom could retire on top of that…..

on trade resistance….can‘t just trade a Carlson though for a bunch of magic beans and expect to improve the team near term.

Anyone other than 8 is probably available in a hockey trade, just not a selloff like some here want.

Agree. And they should be.

This is a great point. The glove fits with NJD so to speak.

Yeah I’d agree with that sentiment generally but Meier is neither a reclamation project nor washed up. He’s one of the best players in the NHL at driving offense and he’s 26 years old.

And you know this how or more likely you’re just making things up to fit a narrative? Not sure why you think players who have options wouldn’t want to come here — Keumper had his choice of suitors and came here. The Caps are a respected organization in the league.

It’s hard to understand his continued employment. For a team that needs to get younger and faster, he is an albatross.

No chance he can turn this around, but that’s not the worst of it. We are all watching as he poisons the youth, while he rides the veterans to exhaustion.
Puzzling take....because you know...the coach has no control over making players younger and faster.....GMBM's job. Pretty sure if Lavi had a team of young, fast, quality NHL'ers....he would be damned happy.

But on the second night, of a back to back, he doesn’t rest anyone. He could have put Snively and AA in against NJ, but he didn’t.

It’s really hard to understand.

It’s not if the coaching staff thinks others are better options. The idea that they should rotate out skaters game by game doesn’t make sense to me. These are world class athletes….they can skate back to backs.

AA barely has any NHL experience, has been, hurt, and is only here because he’s not waiver exempt. Snively is a tweener, not a game changer. It’s not hard at all to understand why these guys get limited time.

Why force that into the lineup when it weakens the team further?

You realize they actually have to play to get experience or know what they are, right?

Oh I let me clarify I wasn't writing about Meier in that statement. I was talking about guys in the past going back to early GMGM days to present (Sacco, Sjogren, Sprong, etc). A 26 yr old is young enough and in his prime with Meier or other proven players to make moves and sign. I also like Meier.

There is no way either of those players would ever come here voluntarily.

I wouldn't go that far. It's all about money now and organization reputation. As long as Ovy is here, they might.

That's true. But why would they go to a team that is the second oldest in the league, 80% likelihood are not in the playoffs and super obviously on the decline?

Perhaps. Then the question is if we want to pay a lot of money and assets to get a player of that caliber. I don't think that's the best choice at the moment.

lol...come on man...

No YOU come on man;)

Because they think they can make the team better? Because a lot of contenders are cap strapped and won’t be able to give them the deals they want? Because the DC area is a great place to raise a young family, even more so if you’re rich? All plausible reasons I think.

And if they replace some of the old guys with young guys, they’re not as old any more!

That might be true for players that already have a Cup. But one of the problems of being a losing team is that it makes it harder to attract players.
