I like rewarding Iorio & Protas based on their effort in the first game...but it's just practice. They like their size I'm sure so while it's aggressive putting them in the mix I could see it. They need to be open to the possibility and give them all the runway they can handle to make a case. They should play at least the next three road games to put them through the paces. That probably should go for Strome to acclimate him, McMichael for more action and Gustafsson to see whether they can trust him defensively. It would also be wise to give Johansen & Carlsson real chances to show what they've got. Along with Snively that's probably the extent of meaningful internal additions. Everyone else is either not ready yet or basically fringe.

But I remain skeptical someone like Johansson could be waived/traded or that otherwise Lavi would sign off on any vet getting moved. They may still need a shake-up so it would be a shame to avoid categorically. They need to be very mindful of what moves can raise their ceiling and be willing to take on some risk (even if it's just a lack of experience currently) in order to work towards it. As much as they could use McMichael being that player it doesn't begin and end there. Protas & Iorio could prove just as important.

under. He won't be playing with Kane and DeBrincat. Plus fans of teams he's played on don't seem very high on him.

On the other hand he should have that 2nd line center spot locked up, assuming McMichael goes back to the press box or LW, which is likely.

aaaaand Lavi is already scratching CMM
Bummer, I am happy to see Protas get a chance though.

He looked better than CMM on Sunday.

So Kuemper and Lindgren should see some time in net tomorrow night, which will provide me with my first opportunity to drastically over-react to either or both of them giving up a goal and blowing up my sole semi-legitimate reason for thinking this team could be better this year than it has been in the last 3.

It’s like the 4th practice and going into the second game. Let’s not start over-reacting yet. CMM played OK Sunday, but he is not yet a 2C. So need to try Eller there. Need to work Strome in so he gets 3C and he has Mantha (who is a top 6 wing) next to him. The next two games and rest of this week are all about experimenting and getting looks at people.

Why do we we need to try Eller at 2C? Are we expecting Eller to take a big step forward at age 33/34? We know what he brings at this point. On the other hand, CMM could absolutely end up as a 2C this year, he's the one we actually need to try out and see where he's at in his development.

It's almost as if they should have had some spots for these young players to win, especially given that Protas had 33 NHL games last year (so he's not exactly a surprise).

Eller should be gone. Give the youth a chance. CMM is going to be benched and my head is going to explode.

Again, there is no need to read into this in advance of the second preseason game. CMM has gotten looks. Other players needs looks. And there is no way in hell CMM is a 2C this year. No chance unless it is forced and that means we are in trouble.

Secondly, Lars is a better player TODAY. Had a bad season and I also hope he gets moved during the year which will indicate that Strome and McMichael have progressed and he is expendable (plus we get value for someone who won’t be resigned).

Have we ever sold FA in the Ovie era? The one season we were a lock to miss the playoffs we trade the farm for Erat :(

Agreed on the CMM front but Eller isn’t a second line center either and I’d rather be giving minutes to CMM so he can develop some confidence. If he isn’t going to play meaningful minutes I would rather he go down to Hershey and be the go to guy in every situation. This 5 minute/spare part role won’t help him develop. They did something similar to Brian Sutherby early on and it screwed up his confidence and offensive game.

We traded for Erat the season before we missed the playoffs.

They traded away Neuvirth (a pending FA) as part of the Halak trade the season they missed the playoffs.

There's much much much better odds that CMM is a 2C this season than Eller is a 2C this season. We have a decade+ of his time in the NHL to know where he's at, and we have his recent play to know that he's in decline. I

I’m a bit skeptical of Laviolette’s eventual usage of CMM and the other youngsters but it’s hard to make much of this move for now.
